Game freezing and completely locking up computer

Hey,

I've had a problem with NS2 ever since I pre-purchased over a year ago. I can play the game for a little while (anything between 1 and 30 minutes), but at some point the game always completely freezes, screen becomes kind of broken up and then goes black. After that, I can't get out of it without having to restart the computer manually. I've tried changing the settings around, played on Ridiculously Awful, removed Bloom, Shadows and the other graphical improvements but nothing works.

Anyone know the problem? Is it the video card overheating? Don't have the problem with other games afaik.

Tried attaching my DxDiag info, but it wouldn't let me. I'll just post some info that might be relevant, tell me if I need to add something.

AMD Phenom™ II X4 965 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
8192MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250
Windows 7

    Hi,

I'm not a specialist but it might be your graphic card overheating or something with your hardware. But check for virus or else in case. You have a laptop (GeForce GTS) so it might be the overheating or a bad ventilation. If you can, open your computer and clean it (fans, cards, etc.).

To check this, use a software which show you the temperature and the use of the different elements of your computer to check what is going on. Then launch the game in windowed and look at the stats all the time.

I had the same problem with my laptop, it was overheating i think ^^

Actually I don't have a laptop, and by the look of the graphics cards, it doesn't look like it would fit in one =P

Shouldn't have anything to do with virus, had the same issue when the drive was just formatted. Could be graphic card overheating, though that doesn't happen in any other game. Any suggestions for software to measure card temperature?

My bad for the graphic card :p

Look at the settings of your GC if all the capacity is allowed to NS2 ^^

And i don't know for a soft with the temperature :S

I'm sorry for my incompetence, but where do I view the settings for my graphics card? =)

Found software for checking temperature. GC was up to 82 celcius at the most. Was mostly around 70-something.

That's pretty hot. I try to keep mine at 50C max. Your graphics card is likely overheating or can't handle ns2 period, try updating drivers.

Do you kind of see the inside of your head when it happens?

    82C should still be alright.

Hi, I have the same problem like you, but not the same graphic card (Geforce GTX460) or cpu.
Horrible sound in a headset. i must reboot by the button.

It doesn't feel like overheating is the problem. It feels too inconsistent. Let me give you an example. The other day I booted the computer and started playing. About 10 seconds in after joining a server the game freezes and I have to reboot. I start up the game again and can actually play a full game this time. After about 30 minutes the game freezes again.

I'll try to get a couple of screenshots of when in happens and post them later.

Download GPUZ and have a look at what's going on with the sensors tab. It's very informative showing you how much GPU load, memory load and temperature and such you have when running a game...
