Do you seriously still play?

Sigh, can't wait till I get my gaming PC so I can play NS2 without ~15-20 fps.

Why not? I do, with a decent PC at that. NS1 is a classic, it's fun, why not play it just because it's on a 14 year old engine?

Only bought Trine 2 for 3.24€ so far. Considering the 75% off Tribes Ascend Starter pack, if the game got more players now than just before it went on steam. I won't bother if I have to choose between 1 full, 2 near empty and 10 locked servers.

You don't get to choose between servers really, it's all matchmaking. It's a bit short notice to get a full impression, but Tribes: Ascend is free to play, so try before you buy is certainly an option.

If you looked at "custom servers" it's no surprise you got the impression that the game has no players, everyone uses the matchmaking queues. Join those and you're in a full server inside a minute.

The starter pack is great value at 75% off. The soldier's spinfusor in particular is indispensable if you play that class. Bounty hunter and ultra capacitor 2 are great all-purpose perks, reach is great for flag runners, and quick switch is kind of a step-headed redchild that isn't used much, though it has gotten more useful as of late. Technician is a great class if you enjoy driving tanks, the 800 gold will allow you to unlock assorted goodies to round out your arsenal, and the 50% lifetime xp booster is very helpful for getting more stuff unlocked.

If you're looking to play T:A with a minimal investment of money, I'd say it's entirely possible to just buy the starter pack and never anything else.

Already have Payday... for the price, it's a great game. It's also clearly a DLC-selling vehicle for the publisher more than a game, given that they want to sell map-packs just like they can to the console-kiddies and CoD-bros. Still, fun to blast through the first bank heist with a few buddies. Sadly, the difficulty ramps up FAST to near-impossible on the later heists.

Picked up Trine2 as well, the first one was OK enough, and I'll get to the sequel once I've completed the first one.

Quite a few other good games on sale... tempted to buy a TON of Binding of Isaac copies so I have birthday presents and random gifts for super-cheap.
No interest in Tribes Ascend, given that it's a giant greedball full of bad gameplay.

Also a bit disappointed by the new 'community voting' option, as it means that we're going to be seeing Call of Modern Battlefield: Advanced Brown Shooter Tactical 27 and Assassin's Creed: The Cashenating coming up on sale instead of unique games that more deserve the spotlight (and that I'd rather buy for cheap).
On the up side, with EA gone we at least won't see useless sports franchise games like MADDEN/FIFA taking the top-spot consistently.

And good luck on Arma II. The developer is known for being RIDICULOUSLY stingy.. 25% off their shoddy non-simulators (take-on helicopters), and are working to ride the wave of DayZ's popularity.
Sadly, Rocket has been consistently screwing up Day Z with each new patch, turning it into a mindless frag-fest instead of a survival horror. I've bailed on it at this point, and am waiting to see if it ever gets fixed, instead of ****ed up worse. The downward trajectory has continued steadily though for the last few months, and shows no sign of stopping until they've pile-driven the mod into the turf, never to recover.

I actually think it's pretty funny that they voted for Asscreed Revelations. They have no idea what they're in for. I thought Asscreed Brohood was a great game, yet Revelations couldn't end fast enough. I think this may cost them sales along the when they try to sell Asscreed 3 and people remember what a disappointment Revelations was.

Can somebody recommend From Dust? I heared that the controls are horrible, is it true?
  • Dirty_Harry_PotterDirty_Harry_Potter Join Date: 2002-11-21 Member: 9500Members
I really liked From Dust (but I am also a fan of the old Populous the beginning, so I am probably somewhat jaded)

I'd say the controls are okay. It is true they are somewhat iffy. I think this is because of the way the physics work in the game - everything sort of... smushes down as you place it. For instance, you cannot make pillars of dirt, as the dirt will flow out and spread evenly where you placed it. So you do not as much chose a precise point to place something as the general area to place it.

Now, you don't really need precision controls for the campaign - so the controls are fine here. However for the challenge maps it can get frustating - and I mean really, really frustating (I myself have just given up on playing them, because often you need to be really fast and precise, which the controls certainly do not allow you to be)

Another related issue of the game is the AI of the villagers. They can be quite picky about where they will go (again related to the physics). I personally don't find this too much of a problem in the campaign. Though, there are a few maps where it certainly could get frustating. Again, this only *really* becomes an issue in the challenge maps.

TL;DR: The campaign is fine. It's only really in the challenge maps you'll have problems. For instance, I vaguely remember having something like 10 seconds to make a long slim dirt pathway for a group of villagers so they can get to safety. Between the controls, the physics and the picky village pathfinding I gave up and never looked back at the challenge maps.

From Dust is a really good game with really awful mouse controls. It is a total emulation of an analogue stick where if the mouse is in the middle of the screen it acts like a stick in its default position, then as you move towards the edges it accelerates more and more like if you were rotating the stick.

If you can make it past that frustration though, it's an incredibly creative, fun and beautiful game.

Is it true that the game is quite linear? I always depicted it in my head as a "sandbox" game.

Each map does have its own specific set goal, but how you go about accomplishing that is very freeform. The dynamic elements that occur in the level often drove me to create and complete my own goals using what I had available.

As a basic example, in one of the earlier levels I decided to go about protecting my entire island from Tsunami's rather than just relying on the magic surrounding my villages.

The Walking Dead is 75% off, I heartily recommend everyone to buy that if you think you might enjoy a superbly told story. Even if you don't like adventure games or other things that Telltale have put out(I certainly don't), you should pick this pack up.

Bought Trine 2 a few days ago and co-oping it with a friend. Great fun really but the bosses are somewhat wonky and awkward. I think I've solved more puzzles exploiting the physics rather than actually solving stuff they way they were meant.

Wow, okay, that's really horrible. Especially when the friends system didn't work pre-steam so we couldn't find each other without finding custom servers. I don't think I'll ever like match making. Might give it another go if steam friends is integrated with server joining so we don't have to deal with the built in thingy. Thanks for clearing that up anyway.

Wonder what fine deals tomorrow will bring when it's my birthday \o/ spoilers: probably none.

I constantly play with friends and it's worked every time their server wasn't full.

It takes itself a lot less seriously and focusses on giving you fun, insane things for you to do rather than creating a realistic world. It's also the least janky of all the Saints Row games and it seems like it's the first one they bothered to polish and get a decent art style in to, it looks great, and is a very good port(that last bit also separates it from GTA IV :P). You can also play through the entire story in Co-Op with a friend.

Yeah, I heartily endorse Saints Row 3. Like I said in my recommendation on Steam, if you like GTA, give it a try. And if you like GTA but thought GTA 4 was a mistake, definitely give it a try. At 75% off I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I'm going to chime in on the fact that Saints Row 3 is, as far as I care, the best GTA like game out there. The basic game play (run around, shoot people, drive cars) is well done and works. What makes it shine is the wonderfully over the top aspects of the game. From the simple aspect that the way you hijack cars is feet first through the windshield, to the cast of characters, who are all amusing as hell.

QUOTE (Arkanti @ Jul 15 2012, 07:43 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You can also play through the entire story in Co-Op with a friend.

    This, So much this also.

I mean, it's far from balanced, but it's amazingly fun. One of my friends picked up the game recently so I just started dropping into his game whenever he was playing.

It's far from balanced (it isn't harder, and you don't share kill streaks, so destruction missions require you to run in opposite directions so there are enough things to destroy), and has a number of technical problems (You can't join when a mission is in progress, we experienced some terrible lag, making it impossible for me to drive when he was hosting). But just running around with a friend making everything blow up is hilariously fun.

Also, as they have both shown up on sale a couple times, and are still on sale, though not as deep I'm going to recommend Ys Origin and Legend of Grimrock.

Ys is a fairly standard action RPG like Zelda. It's good points are nice controls, different characters, fun combat, and a huge range of difficulty (Normal is rather challenging for me once you reach the first boss). The disadvantages are that it's a JRPG, and you will end up spending a lot of time not playing, and either reading or watching unskippable cut scenes (a personal dislike).

Legend of Grimrock is based on the old D&D games, first person dungeon crawls where you control a party of adventurer (err, prisoners). The difference is that it is NOT turn based, it is a very odd sort of real time, meaning you can game the mechanics a lot and circle around bad guys, and do all sorts of silly things. Which is really required because the game is hard. Not completely unforgiving like the really old school games. There are save points fairly regularly, which also restore all your HP, and you can reuse them, though they have a cool down of some sort. I'm really enjoying the hell out of it.

On topic, anyone recommend Harley Quinn's Revenge for Batman:AC ? I feel I've completed the game enough so it needs to be a pretty darn good DLC for me to go back.
