Ello folks me and a buddy of mine have just booted up our new NS2 server for the first time and we need your help to stress test the sucker. If all goes well this may be the first of many servers from us.

Specs? Namely CPU-type.

Also, whether you have OCd the cpu?

For reference, the best performing NS2 servers (ns2servers.com, All-In, HBZ, Skulkrush, 156, Monash (formerly Aus Pure)) are running Intels OCd to the 4.0-4.5+GHz range to get decent performance on a 16 slot server. Also, 16GB is fairly overkill, since NS2 rarely uses over 1.5GB per server instance. The only other major consideration is whether you have sufficient upload speed (over 5Mbps is generally good), since that seems to be the other limiting factor (besides CPU clockspeed) that people run into.

I'm the one running it, so I'll jump in here for the technical questions etc.

Unfortunately we do not have physical access to the server, as it is rented from another provider (I'm just managing the software side), so we can't OC.
Currently the box is only a temporary test as we've just migrated all our other services from it to a beefier box (however the clock speed on the CPU isn't any different).

Also, I hope this upload speed is sufficient:

2.66ghz, tickrate will be pretty poor tbh.

Yeah, it was kinda to be expected - thats why it's just a test run at the moment with nothing big on the line.

They have to get the game to run good on a server like that or NS2 will remain a small niche product.

After seeing first hand how it performs on that hardware tonight it seems to be that the server application suffers from lack of multi threading. One core on the CPU was sat at around about 75% with ten players on, the other three were under ten percent. If they manage to implement multi threading into the sever application it has the potential to run so much better (Although speaking from experience I know how much of a hassle writing software to use multiple threads is). I'll be keeping an eye on the updates to see if the server side stats performing any better in future.

(will just note that I had not ventured into ns2 hosting before, and I haven't really read much of the stuff on the forums here yet, so if there are any tweaks that are around chances are I haven't found them. Also the stuff I've said here is most likely common knowledge already, so take if it's not new then ignore me)

At 2.66GHz, I wouldn't expect miracles. ATM, you'll either have to accept that server performance will suck at 16 players or drop your slots to 10 or less to get decent playability.

Also, nice connection :) My upload speed concern is generally because some people have been trying to run servers on OCd gaming PCs from low speed residential or business connections.

Correction,
You Couldn't see the server in the dev tracker http://www.play4dead.com/ns2/ .
Reason why: its a very long delay before it appears. Look now and you'll find your server there.
Server appears also in the in-game browser and in nanogrid server browser :)
