Has anyone done it before?
So, I and a friend of mine want to leave the safety of Germany and see the world. We plan to visit asia/australia, work for a living, while we're on tour, live in a tent etc.

Does any one of you have any experience with this/done it before? What can you tell me about it, what do we really need to survive?

Cheers, Panigg. :)

P.S. if you guys happen to live in kambodscha, vietnam, laos, burma, bali or australia I'll be sure to visit you, if you don't mind. :D

Overcome your fear of needles, because you're about to have a kabillion shots. And not the alcohol kind.

Never feared needles. Not much of a problem really.

I spent just under a year in total around Asia.. in India, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. Don't over-think it, just go.. you'll have a blast.

Shots aren't that bad.. hep, tetanus, typhoid. You are advised to take antimalarials in many parts of Asia, but we didn't bother.

I don't think working for a living is really much of an option in Asia, unless you have skills like scuba diving or whatever.. but I presume you plan to travel across Asia and then work in Australia. I can't advise you there as I've never been to Australia.

If you have any specific questions, I'll answer them, but it's around 10 years since we went so my advice will probably be stale.

Friend of mine is currently working in australia, got that covered...

Why do you think working in asia is not an option?

How much money did you have with you for the trip? How much did you spend altogether?

Well, what kind of skills were you hoping to sell there and what hourly rate do you hope to attain? I think if you answer these questions then your question will probably answer itself with minimal research.

Good luck, I know I'd starve to death after a week for various reason or too tired to not be gullible and thus lose my organs somewhere in nomansland.

My sister got a job as an illegal sorting melons in Australia.

Still, why would you work for a living in the Southeast Asian countries? You can go down there with like $1,000 and live like a king. What are you going to do, sew some shoes together for Nike in an un-air-conditioned deathtrap of a factory for 16 hours a day, at $0.14 an hour?

Further, why would you visit Burma? Going to take a detour through North Korea on your way?

Temphage probably speaks the truth. Have capital in reserve to get through the poorer areas, and only plan on working in countries where you can actually earn some non-insignificant money.

Also, set aside a reserve fund for travel home. You don't know what will happen along the way. Maybe everything goes fine. Maybe something happens that forces you to return home, and it would really suck to the stuck in Thailand without the money for a ticket. So set aside that fund, and never touch it for any reason until you get back home. You don't even get to buy food for that money. If you're so down on your luck that you're starving and that money is the only money you have, you must buy a ticket home. Then buy food in the airport at horriffic prices.

1st - You will need a visa to be able to get legal employment in all countries outside the EU. The only Asian countries where English is widely spoken are Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. In all other countries, good luck dealing with employers.

2nd - If you're not a professional then you have the options of teaching languages (There is only high demand for native English speakers sorry!) or being a volunteer for some charity project (no pay). Remember lots of people go to Asia you're not the only one so don't expect it will be easy to find a job. It's only easy if you're American/Canadian/Australian/British and teaching English. Do not forget you will be paid in local currency which is not of equal value to the Euro (if it still exists when you come back).

3rd - Have you ever camped in a hot Asian country before? How are you going to secure your belongings? What will you do when there is a typhoon? What will you do when snakes, lizards and spiders come into your tent? How will you keep clean? Be sane and at least stay in a hostel if not a cheap hotel.

4th - You can go to jail for a VERY long time or be sentenced to death if drugs are found on you or in your luggage. Do not let anyone - anyone - carry your bags or in anyway handle them. Either way your life will be RUINED. Be extra extra cautious if you go to Bali.

5th - If you run out of money do not sit around doing nothing or sleep in an airport. Go to the German consulate/embassy and they can help you. Know where that place is wherever you go.

you could also pick up language job...
since most germans i know speak al least 4... shouldn't be too hard to pick up work speaking whatever is in demand normally english.. (might say you lived in england for awhile they do want natives, but if they need a teacher boom easy.
so maybe even look into a student visa of some form along with a work visa buuuut i did a stint in china back in 2001 alot of "under the table" type stuff
    all a blast

yeah peregrinus has a major point
your face will melt at 6 in the morning when that humidity climbs..bugs...so freakin hot down there. uggg .. yeah.. enjoy that..

good tip.. start going to places that serve the food whereyou are going to be headed to.. find some new favorites

    my personal tip

be prepared for the yellow ######storm if it hits ya,,, just like a chocolate shotgun...

    anyhoo
