(you should understand that was a joke)
my guess is there would have to be a new series of maps built specifically for marine vs marine and alien vs alien... but thats just my own personal speculation.
Marine vs Marine has some undeniable advantages which could warrant an increased priority for this addition.
The sides would be automatically balanced as they are identical. Maps of course need to be completely symmetrical, which cuts the production time in half; they can be mirrored along an axis.
I've already read in multiple places that the devs are incorporating exactly this for version 2.0, client patch. Do you people who say its impossible and never going to happen actually know what you are talking about or are you just assuming?

QUOTE

symmetrical maps are boring. i don't want to see an ns_2fort.

Chess and Go are both games which are played on a perfectly symmetrical board. They are both considered highly strategical and not boring.
Obviously the only area on a symmetrical board that is not equal to other areas is the centre, but I do not see how that is relevant, as conflict (and thus interesting situations) is also created by areas of matching value.
Why are people only requesting Marine vs. Marine and not Alien vs. Alien? Now there's an original mod for you. Imagine the initial skulk rush. As far as I am aware, marine vs marine and alien vs alien are wanted features by the dev team and is destined for version 2 (hopefully).
Symetrical maps ARE boring. Chess and Go are symetrical because of the way the pieces move. An unsymetircal 'map' would be difficult to balance, and comparing a tactical movement based board game with an RTS/FPS is kinda un-realistic anyways.
Aliens vs Aliens would be best with 5 hives I think (2 hives each and a scrap for that all important 3rd hive), and opens up the possibiltys for mappers, as they can build multiple levels over each other, which you can't do in Marine vs Alien due to the commander.
Marine vs Marine would be a strategists wet dream as 2 commanders face off against each other.

I don't think FF is a good idea considering how marines are supposed to run in teams and that there are a lot of close combat in NS. Marines would be shooting each other by accident all the time and arguing about it too much.
Consider four or five marines running together and one skulk jumps right in the middle of them and start chewing them up. They would be shooting the sh*t out of each other in panic. Furhtermore, they would be spamming the poor commander for med packs during the whole game making the commander's job even more stressful
I know I would stay clear of marine team mates with shotties
I dunno. I still think it's asking too much of the average gamer who likes playing marine. I mean already without FF a decent skulk can take out two or three marines or even more before he gets killed when the skulk gets in a group of marines.
Particularly during the skulk rush at the beginning of a game you would run a good chance of getting cut down by FF. I doubt the average player can keep his cool when he has two or three skulks running around in the room snapping at everything that moves. I think FF would be a major advantage for the aliens.
Also it reduces the lamer factor. I would just hate it if you are playing one of those good even games and a couple of idiots comes on and starts shooting/chewing up their team mates. I makes me mad just writing about it

I swear to god, I see more sparks thrown up by hitting the back of other Marines than I do green blood thrown up by hitting Aliens on pubs. That's when I usually pound my head against the desk and reconnect to the server to go aliens.
But anyway, I ramble.
Has anyone else thought of the Marine vs. Marine problem of siege turrets? It'd just turn into a war from behind walls. One team lays down sieges, the other lays down sieges in a different spot to take out those sieges that are sieging their buildings. It could go on like that for a long time. Besides the fact that you could completely rip apart a marine base with sieges(that is only if they don't get their sieges up first). All maps should just be renamed ns_siege in anticipation of Marine versus Marine combat.
friendly fire would not be advantageous to aliens. think about charge, bile bomb, spore cloud, acid rocket, hell, 2 skulks eating a phase, "oops, did i bite you? sorry man".
get ready for it if you havent tried it out, CAL rules set mp_friendlyfire to 1.(so i am told, been too lazy to go check it myself.)
Regarding the problem with sieges, I don't think its a major problem. They'd become more of a detterent to each other then an actual weapon i.e. we can't siege that base/outpost because theres a siege in it
Overall, theres a fair bit of balancing that would be needed. For example, GLs would absolutely hammer marines at their current damage level. Marines move too slow to get away quickly, a clip would decimate a squad easily. Perhaps sieges will be removed all together ? Sniper rifles ?
Theres probably a load of issues with M vs M and A vs A that will only crop up with playtesting.

Hold your horses. I waited over a year for Marines versus Aliens. You can wait a few months more for Marine versus Marine.
