Marine Classes

<div class="IPBDescription">Aliens get it why not marines..</div>One of the fun things about playing the alien side is the ability to play different aliens and classes.

So why cant the marines have the same fun?
I feel that just buying a shotgun or a grenade launcher doesnt really make marines as versatile and fun as the aliens. You see a hundred things about alien tweaking but how much can you really do with the marines?

It would be nice if say that as well as a armory you could have some kind of small building that marines can step into to have their class or even armor upgraded.

And depending on the class will give you access to upgraded weapons researched by commander.
I also beleive that maybe a machine gun class is needed later in the level when you have 5 onos stomping down the door.
You could even go as far to add certain upgrades to classes, like a scout class with lower armor but faster speed. Or a engineer class that starts out with a welder.
This would make the marine class so much enjoyable because right now one of the biggest flaws of natural selection 1 and more so now, is marines are dependent mainly on a team with superior first person playing skill. If your team isnt so good at fps....things will go bad.

But something is needed to make the marines gameplay stand out from natural selection 1. And adding classes would only help to balance the gameplay.

Though thats alot of extra work to implement...
no lie.

Also NS2 is very centered around the two sides being as A-Symmetrical as possible, just because the one side has it does not mean the other should.

here's the thing about just about every game out there... it's almost always 50/50... one side has the same thing as the other side possibly with a different skin.
    BOOOOOORRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGGGGG
that's why in this game when you win a slug fest against the aliens, the victory is so much sweeter...
which in a sense makes the game more like reality... someone is always bettter than you, has more/different/better skills than you...
life's a ######. or go back and play halo where everything is a clone of everything else

I mean.. come on... that is the primary appeal of this game.
if the asymmetry goes i would soon follow and i think 98% of the players would not play anymore...

Marines shouldn't get classes just because aliens have it. Read above, the game is asymmetric.

However, you are are in luck. Marines WILL get another class in the form of the exosuit. It will basically be that "machine gun class" to take on the onos.
I think instead of full blown "classes", the basic marine could benefit from a few more items with tradeoffs that allow players to tailor their marine to certain roles.

Im sorry that you guys hate the idea so much,
but something dramatic needs to be done to the marine class.

Not some minor tweaks here, or minor tweaks there.
The game play is boring and lacking so much compared to aliens.
Im tired of joing game after game either faced with getting owned with all the crappy fps players vs a team with 1 or even 2,3,4,5 extra players. Or just sitting in the ready room. Waiting for a chance to go to the fun team. Aliens.

So yeah at this point i think we can see that drop of players continues, duh duh du

Myself, im already ready to quit and its not even out of beta :|. Maybe ill just leave for a while like everyone else and come back.

But MY GOD IT JUST MAKES SENSE TO HAVE A SCOUT ABILITY/CLASS WITH LOW ARMOR for scouting and resource hunting.
And a normal assault class with normal starting armor and their own guns respectively.
It makes sense, to me anyway remember everyone is entitled to their own opinion you dont have to be so stonewalled against mine.

But like i said the game is extremely fun as aliens, I enjoy skulking until i get that chance to become onos. But marines is just lacking so much. All you get is a few extra weapons and a jetpack. Hardly seems comparable to the aliens with their assaults(skulk/fade), engineer(gorge),scout(lerk), and the frakking tank onos.

But yeah i guess i dont really know what im talking about. By the sound of everyones reply.
Im not even asking for much, just a class or armor or different alien species that can run faster for the trade off of armor or differnet perks. Is that really that bad?

I guess my solution is ill stop playing the game for now, (been really laggy since update, people hording aliens 95% of the time)
Im sure itll be a good game whatever it ends up to be. But ill see you guys after release :).

Btw i was the guy running around with alien as their name :D.

People are all stacking aliens because the game is horribly imbalanced in b209, exclusively in favor of aliens. And people want to win. Thus, they stack aliens and feel good about owning a game that they almost can't lose.

Here's a tip if you want to be a different class of marine: Just be that different class. If you want to scout, go sprint on ahead and scout. Call out incoming directions. If you want to attack, go attack their RTs. If you want to engineer, defend, etc, then just stand and guard RTs and build forward outposts. You already have all these "classes" just by deciding how you play. Every modern fps game doesn't need to tell you how to play via your class title.

Technically the frontiersmen do indeed have classes and they are also researched and bought similar to the aliens. But in a different way, still adding to that asymmetrical feel the devs are going for...

    - Riflemen
    - Shotgun guy
    - Axe dude
    - Welder buddy
    - Flamethrower fellow
    - Jetpack combined with the above classes
    - Mister heavy weapon EXO (soon)

I don't think we need to have specific "classes" of marines - I think the core mechanic should just stay as it is.

A suggestion I've made somewhere else might have some relevance here, though: give the armor upgrades a movement penalty, and make them optional. Say Armor 0 allows for a bit faster movement, Armor 1 is normal, Armor 2 is a bit slower and Armor 3 is slower still. That way if you want to be a fast-moving scout, you can be.

Similarly, Weapon upgrades could be accompanied by a either a slower rate of fire or greater kickback.

I think both of these modifications would actually remove the current alien imperative to always go for a crag hive first, if just to keep on top of the marine armor / weapon upgrades.
