I guess you could use the options button at the top right below the NEW TOPIC button and track topics, which you can view on your userCP. But yeah I do no see a "responses to my post thingy"...

Also the ability to vote down or up other users posts. If flaming, trolling or getting off topic. A little more self regulation would be great.

WorthyRival: that is a brilliant idea. I have always loved how www.pinkbike.com does that. Also, I just read a tweet that UWE is looking for better forum software, so I guess they know it could be better as well.

Kouji: Yeah that's what I figured but its just a pain when you are commenting on a bunch of topics.

A major forum overhaul, upgrade, migration, something is being looked at. No promises yet, but the hunt is on and if something fits the work will be done.

The forum feels so small and spaced out now.

I'd really like the karma system and the upvote/downvote system. That way we can moderate our own threads, in a way, without moderator input.

Users moderating themselfs? Would that not just stink the place up with conformity...
  • AlignAlign Remain Calm Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 5216Forum Moderators, Constellation
Upvotes/downvotes tend to discourage people from posting controversial opinions, so don't add that functionality.

If the login bug and search was fixed this forum software would be pretty good from the user end. I'm not sure changing software would improve much, because it's a lot of work, doing the migration, configuring everything, changing the templates, etc. And then everybody has to get used to the new forum again. But I never used IP.Board so maybe it's a pain to admin and maintain.

For the look getting ride of the few ugly icons would help, but it's also a lot of work :

    <img src="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/style_images/tsa/folder_editor_images/rte-emo-button.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I'm not too sure about the new hierarchy, it's a lot of stuff to click. Displaying 10 boards on nowadays screen is not so much of a problem immo.

Yessss, this. I have a feeling I'm going to forget about certain areas of the forum now that they are burried in a hierarchy, and it wasn't really needed either, this forum isn't THAT buzy or substantial to warrant any sub-categories at all really. Oh, next time you make an adjustment to the boards, go ahead and create a server-section, you know you want to.

Yeah the new forum grouping seems pointlessly annoying just because its the same layout as ns1 stuff doesn't make it a good idea
  • DarkOmenDarkOmen Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 7148Members
For the record, I do not like the new forum layout. It was much easier to get to what you wanted before the subforum changes.

I'm not really affected at all by the change, just clicking in one spot instead of another compared to before.

yes, I don't know why they changed it. it takes an extra click or two to get where you want to go now. pain in the ass.
  • RyneRyne Join Date: 2012-02-25 Member: 147408Members, NS2 Map Tester
Yup. Not very intuitive; when you see "Natural Selection 2 discussion" and click it, then get presented with 2 subforums.

Some organization is good, but having your main discussion forum as a sub forum just doesn't seem right. Also, it should be at the very top.
  • AlignAlign Remain Calm Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 5216Forum Moderators, Constellation
You guys did notice you can click the subcategories directly from the main forum view, right?

Yes, but what other forum have you visited where the main forum link is a sublink, which blends in with the other text? It is literally the same font/color as the forum description!
  • playerplayer Join Date: 2010-09-12 Member: 73982Members
Yes yes, but the links are a lot less obvious. You also lose some of the last-post\poster information. This just wasn't needed. Bleh.

What's your point? the fact that there are sub-categories embedded within sub-categories now is the problem. If I want to get to NS2 General Discussion I have to first click "Natural Selection 2 Discussion" category, and then "General Discussion" sub-category, wheras previously it was on the forum index, now I need an extra click to get down here, and then an extra <back to get out of it and go to another part of the forum, and those OTHER parts of the forum are ALSO now sub-categories within a category (mapping/modding).

    It's just poor design.
  • AlignAlign Remain Calm Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 5216Forum Moderators, Constellation
My point is merely that no you don't need to do that.
    <img src="http://i47.tinypic.com/hwiq6c.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
    You can click them directly.
  • playerplayer Join Date: 2010-09-12 Member: 73982Members
We know the buttons are there, but it just looks and feels like crap. Even your tiny resolution could encompass all of the sub-forums in the NS2-forum, no need to shove them into futher categories and needlessly obfuscate things. Just look at it, Discussion only splits into 2, Help only splits into 2, Creation only splits into 2, this is abstraction gone haywire.

I know, I was responding to paradoxum specifically. I'm not really bothered by the design since it doesn't interfere with <i>my</i> way of using the forums, but neither would I mind if it was changed back.

We can't do the whole thumbs up / thumbs down thing, no way!

That system does not work, it never will. People do not use thumbs down correctly. Thumbs down inevitably turns into "I disagree" and the entire experience becomes a negative one.

Take for instance somebody makes a radical suggestion, people who disagree thumb it down, and it auto locks, or becomes hidden, or ignored, ect. What is the benefit of thumbs down in this situation?

When it comes to trolls, they adapt. You can't can't fight them with this system without them fighting you too. Good moderators will keep the forum fine so long as they follow strict guidelines.
