What happend to the pistolwhipping Marines?
So, my brother calls me and he's like "OMG!!! NS2 is finally here, I bought it and Im playing beta right now!!"
This basically leads me to unknown worlds home page to check it out, and i see that people are allready playing organised, so i imediately click the link for the youtube vid.
And what do I see? Marines spraying like allways, and not even one whipping out the pistol for a few potshots at the oncoming skulks.
This immediately leads me to believe that the guys playing must be retarded or otherwise mentally disabled.
But alas i do a quick search on the forums and skim the results and I find that it is apparently not viable anymore.
Does this mean that all the hours i spent playing NS will be worth nada if i pick up a copy of NS2?
And if you think pistol sniping at range to conserve the LMG for the up close and personal was irrelevant in NS then you didn't master it.
Well anyways, looking forward to chomp, stomp and shoot you all when i get rid of this craptop and buy a new one :)

NS2 is nothing compared to NS1 regarding gameplay and you need serious cpu overclocks to play.
No.

Epic, since you guys changed hitreg to be more clientside I have noticed my pistol firing speed slowed down a lot as well in low fps. Hopefully a fix for that is coming soon!

com on cory, the pistol draw animation is rediculously fast as it is man. try standing infront a mirror and match its speed, i dare you(people who want it faster).
What does that have to do with NS2's mechanics? Try standing in front of a mirror and triggering a jetpack or going through a phase gate; those don't work either.
you again.... seems we end up on opposing sites of a discusion every time, hehe.
no worrys here man, im sure UWE will give the masses what they want. lucky for me, its modable. ;)
After watching 15 replays of organised play, I can't really believe it. But I'm going to find out later today when I'm stealing/borrowing my brothers pc.
The pistol in NS was the difference of life and death, this is especially true for all aimers from CS.
The way I and several others used it made it effective but also let you have a glimmer of hope if you were outnumbered.
ie. 2 marines go for a res tower at start of the game, one is building and one is keeping watch. Around the corner 3 skulks comes bouncing along. Watchkeeper then fires his pistol at the least bouncy skulk and takes him out, then changes to LMG. Builder has also had time to aim his LMG at the oncoming 2 skulks. Time for the panicked LMG spray (just face it; sometimes it takes a full mag to get 1 skilled skulk) and the chomping.

Fy fai fo fum!
I smell a troll that can't draw a gun!
Just because you can't do it doesn't mean that nobody can.
And personally I can't think of a better motivation to become as fast as possible than the thought of a skulk chomping you.

The pistol has done what its always done, skulks are just far less consistent in speed in NS2, making the pistol harder to use. Against good skulks its best used just before the skulk gets to you, when his speed and trajectory are the most predictable. Any further away and his speed and trajectory is fluctuating as he bounces off walls and ceilings.
The masses? Suddenly the CoD-crowd is denominating itself as the poor minority? No, it are the players who preferred NS1's sleek and fast weapon-play that are getting ###### up the arse with NS2, not you. Everything is slower, and that indeed includes the pistol.
Last weapon used binding?
that's a great idea
;)

It's a keybind currently implemented with the menu mod, so hopefully when the official non flash menu is released it will have similar additional functions.
I can. I also have <.25 sec between my shots. Then again I shoot USPSA competitions quite a bit. http://www.uspsa.org/
nice... when I was in the navy i got picked up for blackhawk... my buddy gotta a super sweet new (2011) 1911 custom at cost
you do any 3 gun comps?
yeah a bit off subject
so
when the menu is fixed last weapon used bind for mai mouse :)
Better yet, try standing in front of a mirror and uninstalling NS2.
I used to use it on both marines and aliens playing NS1

Super off topic
Hey I was Navy as well, EM2N - Nuclear Electrician on the USS West Virginia. As for 3-guns I have only done one and had to use borrowed guns. Only have enough money for the XDm 9mm's I use for Production class. I would love to own a nice 2011 to turn into a limited class gun. But, if I did that I might as well get my own presses since hollow/flat .40's are getting more and more expensive to buy.
This made me lol.
What has changed exactly (from NS1)? Considering the damage and health of the pistol and skulk respectively have both remained the same, and the skulk is largely regarded as being slower and easier to predict now.
TBH the secondary mode is really annoying to use because of the delay between shots, and the delay for the actual shot to happen.
That's putting it mildly.
Hit detection is abysmal.
Server performance is poor.
Client performance is even worse.
Skulks are sometimes harder to predict, and hitboxes go all weird, because of walljumping + unrestrained "air control" (sometimes it feels like the skulks spend more time in the air than they do on the ground with the current walljumping mechanic -- not good).
All of these contribute to making inflicting damage very difficult in ns2.
Client performance is even worse.

Tis the other way around. Client-performance, while really bad, doesn't even come close to how horrifically slow servers are (no, 4.5GHz Sandybridges don't count, although even those run badly, which just goes to show).

The draw time is slightly longer, though not at all "laughable". The NS1 pistol kills a vanilla skulk in 5 hits, as does the NS2 pistol. The hit detection is bad across all weapons, so there's no reason not to switch to it since the LMG is just as affected.
