Playing = horrid FPS, Spectating/Waiting room = Great FPS. Whats wrong?

So here is my struggle. Ive been beta testing the game for close to what seems a year now. My performance since, has maybe improved 10% at most. The patches seem to reduce the hitching and stutters, but overall low framerate still remains.

Here is the kicker however, and for the life of me I cant figure it out.

When im actually playing the game, as a marine or an alien, my framerate is around 15 fps. In combat it drops to around 5 fps.

If im spectating (or dead), and looking around, even with combat going on, im getting 60 fps.

In the waiting room, with 15+ other players running around, jumping, etc, as Onos, lerks, marines, etc, im getting 60 FPS.

I cant understand why. Especially during spectating, the only difference is that im not in control of the character im viewing, vs when im actually playing. Why that would cause my framerate to drop from a solid 60 FPS, down to 5-15 fps is beyond me.

My system is by no means beefy, but based on how well the game performs spectating, and in the waiting room, I see no reason why I shouldnt be able to pull at least a solid 30 fps when i play.

Set to horribly awful
Disabled bloom, shadows, and the rest through the console
Reduced my screen resolution to lower levels

None of these seem to help.

My specs:

Win7 64 bit
Core2Quad 2.8 ghz
4 gigs ram
ATI HD6850 running the 12.3 drivers (tried 12.4 didnt change anything, and caused stuttering in BF3 - which by comparison, runs at a solid 60 fps for me with mostly high settings at 1920x1080 resolution.)

Ive been an avid gamer since 1990, and although i lack the cash to have an 8core i7 with 2 580 nvidia cards, my system is pretty tweaked and optimized for gaming. Ive been through all the jumps and hoops tweaking settings, driver functions, etc. Ive tried driver version from 11.8 up to 12.4 with no change.

Yes, I know this is a beta, but this issue just seems very odd, and hasnt changed since i started beta testing way back when those of us that preordered first got in.

The difference in FPS between spectator and actually playing the game has to do with actually being able to interact and shoot stuff compared to just floating around in no clip.

All that stuff you can do as a player has to be calculated. I run my C2D E6420 @ 3.2Ghz and can have a constant 25-30FPS in combat. But it's kinda weird as my old rig (same era as yours) can handle this quite well. Yet I have seen newer/2012 powerhouse rigs struggling compared to me...

The biggest issue with the game is the communication between the engine code and lua code. Stuff has been optimised to some extent, which are the source for getting less and less hitching, but in essence the core is still the same, which need severe brute forcing to get the game to run smooth. I think this will be a good read for you on upcoming developments on this and the current state of the game as well :)
