<div class="IPBDescription">Ouch!</div>When marines walk into an alien base, They ignore the whips and find a nice cozy corner to knife the hive. Iv always thought to myself "if I saw that structure in real life whipping me (to the point where in half dead) would I really be standing?

Just wondering does anyone else think whips should knock marines back? I think it would be a good addition to gameplay

when i walk into an alien base and kill the hive, i've always thought "if that structure fell on me in real life would i still be standing?"

seriously though, are you talking about whips stunning marines? How are you supposed to fight anything if your perma stunned?

I've always thought the whips should attempt to grab the marine's leg if he tries to ignore it and run past it, of course he would be able to free himself with the axe.

    Hehe, Marine tennis...

But yeah, knockback might do more harm than good.

    1) Not fun for Marine (almost like a guaranteed Rifle-butt on a Skulk in the air)
    2) Really short Whip range, and now it just did the Marine a favor by knocking him outside of it.

I think whips just need a redesign to be honest, the only thing they do properly is counter a gl rush. Can't use them to siege bases and certainly can't use them to defend anything properly.

Would bring an interesting relationship btw gorge hydras and karmander

yes, everything the aliens do should knock marines down

every marine bullet should cause aliens to bleed to death and slow down gasping for air

thank you for your game design advice

Seriously though, right now the only function of whips is as anti-grenade defence as an anti-marine defence they are pretty much worthless unless placed in huge numbers or in a few very specific choke points. They really are not much of a deterrent atm, but should they be? I was never too fond of static defence myself game is for players not AI!

Actually, I think this would be a good place to suspend control for marines. Remember, you can just walk around it - which is what I understand it is designed to enforce. I think this would have been a better place to implement knockdown than the Onos gore, for instance.

actually, hasn't anybody noticed whips are bugged as ###### and basically don't do anything to marines?
    there's your answer btw, OP
until a marine does dmg do a whip it's like "not activated yet" and is harmless to marines!
it whips with 0 dmg, and often doesn't whip at all.
    :)

the dumb part about whips is that mature whips do like 10x more damage, maybe 20x even, when doing bombard than when doing their normal whip attack. That means that they're absolutely useless in melee range.

Bombard eats away at armor, so it does soften Marines up for the melee whip attack. Thing is, they are bugged at 100% HP currently, so they're often not firing the ball, and Marines can just rush pass them as they recharge Bombard...

i mean when they're attacking structures.

This would make whips too over powered

When I see marines entering my base, I send my whips at them and root them! Some other problems though, it takes too many mists to get those bad boys up and running at fully mature, plus they are somewhat bugged (sometimes they do not do damage :( ), but yea, if they were able to knockback, that might just be a bit too much.

They've started addressing a number of these things, gorge spit slow has been removed, onos gore knockback has been removed, infestation slow is being removed, spore has been made more transparant, etc
  • TweadleTweadle Join Date: 2005-02-03 Member: 39686Members, NS2 Map Tester
Things look to be going the that way-ish which is reason for hope. Gorge spit still has the face-splat though, infestation is an i'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it point and removing knockback gore is awesome (I wonder what the next onos ability will look like though...).
  • XariusXarius Join Date: 2003-12-21 Member: 24630Members, Reinforced - Supporter
Next onos ability is primal scream AFAIK. But yea, it's looking good, a small amount of 'negative abilities' are manageable and even add flavour to the game. (I.e I don't think gorge spit is really a serious impairment, stomp knockback is acceptable and counterable, etc)
  • TweadleTweadle Join Date: 2005-02-03 Member: 39686Members, NS2 Map Tester
Primal scream might make aliens invulnerable or jam everyone's weapons for all we know ;)

Maybe it should knock down marines that are sprinting, but otherwise it sounds too overpowered.

I think whips are fine, the only issue for me is that whilst they do whip grenades back, 50% of the time they seem to explode and the splash damage ends of hitting the whip.

I think it would be good to have some knockback, but not to the point where it prevents you firing. Maybe enough to knock you near to another whip, so you end up being pinballed if there are 3/4 whips.

That way, you can't just run past a group of whips... which really should stop marines from passing.

A standalone grenade launcher would make whips have some actual defensive value. Otherwise 1 person can shoot the whips and then nade the place, the bigger the team the weaker they are.

Increasing Whip's attack damage will solve all of its problems.

Marines will think twice about trying to sprint past a Whip, if they risk losing at least half of their health.

Whips will also become effective siege weapons, capable of assaulting Sentry fortified bases, as well as taking out undefended Power Nodes on their own, freeing aliens players' time.

That ought to make marines say "Ouch!." :)
