This Exception Code means STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER.

This is often caused by a wrong Version of a DLL File.

On my mashine, there are multiple versions of this dll installed. a quick check with Process Monitor.. (Oh i love this tool) tells me that NS2 is using the following dll on my pc:

I was able to start a older version of NS2 in a backup Steam Folder, so its a problem with 206, have also noticed there are different versions of these of these files in "\natural selection 2" and "\natural selection 2\util" folders , and deleting and doing verify integrity of game cache and replacing missing files still results in game not starting.

all my other steam and origin games work ok. and some of these use the same MSVCR80.dll but different version in there local game folders.

I've gone through and confirmed that the Steam build of NS2 is using Microsoft.VC80.CRT 8.0.50727.6195 as expected.

Often these files are located in a common area on Windows (because another application has installed them there), but we include them with the Steam build in case they aren't. In your Natural Selection 2 Steam folder you should have the files:

Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest

msvcm80.dll

msvcp80.dll

msvcr80.dll

    Are those all there?

Yes they are all there, have deleted and download from steam many times. but funny thing is the version in "util" folder of NS2 is different version, you may need to check you have same for game and editor / Builder tools ?

Backup version of NS2 beta 201 starts and runs ok, something not right with beta 206.
Have gone back to playing Aliens versus Predator single player to get my alien killing fix, but damn hard as levels are so damn dark. lol

Awesome! I'm glad that I could help you :)

@Max: Is it possible for you to add that folder to the steam removing procedure? Can you add own steps to the install/uninstall of steam games to wipe everything left behind?

I don't really understand what the files were that were causing the problem. Was it some sort of mod that was copied there?

Me neither. But in "%APPDATA%\Natural Selection 2" are only the settings xmls, shader cache (and logs ofc). So one of those caused probably the issue. I don't think it's a problem with a mod because he removed and reinstalled NS2 in the first place.

I think something went wrong with creating the shader cache and on a second start reading in a wrongly created shader caused the crash. But that's just guessing.
