Building Stuff On Top Of Stuff

See title
A few days ago I saw a commander have a turret build on top of a TF. Has anyone experimented with this or gotten an idea of how effective this is?

Will the turret cover the TF all 360 degrees around? If yes then in theory you could cover a TF and a RT with two turrets by placing the TF against a wall behind the the RT with a turret in front of the RT. An alien would be hit by both turrets from most angels. I know you can't do this in all situation, but in most you can.

The next question is can you put turrets on top of other marine structures? If yes, which ones? All of them? Using only one turret to cover a structure seems like good economy. Furthermore, the turret is harder to get at for aliens not capable of shooting.

Another interesting thing I saw in another game was a gorg who build a Offense Chamber on top of a Phase Gate. It seemed to plug it, at least I didn't see any marines coming out of it. Is this good form or not? Furthermore the Phase Gate was indestructable to aliens. I tried to chew it up. Nothing happened.

Finally a note on the danger of standing on res nodes. Yesterday I was playing and one of the gorges was new to the game. During the game a fade got hurt and placed himself in front of the gorg and said "heal me". Unfortunately the gorg decided to build a Res Chamber on top of him instead. I couldn't help chuckle a little when I looked at the cursing Res Chamber with the flailing fade claws sticking out. It was a lot funnier than when I build a Res Chamber on top of myself when I just started playing NS

These seem like legit tactics to me. First of all, I've never been able to build anything *perfectly* on the center of another structure, which would be required for 360 degree coverage. Second, I can imagine how alien overgrowth could block phase gates...sounds reasonable and clever. I wonder what happens to the marines...if they get stuck or what.

Last, if you are standing on a resource node, you are just *asking* for somebody to accidentally place a structure on you.

turrets have a 60 degree arc of travel, up and down. This means they can't hit things right above them, nor can they hit things right below them. Chances are very good that a turret built on top of the TF would not cover the TF from Skulk attacks at all due to it's increased elevation.

Marines building buildings on top of each other has been deemed an exploit by Flayra himself, and will be nerfed in 1.04.

You can currently build most buildings on others, but some can't be stacked. I don't know thw specifics of what can and can't.

You can put chambers in the middle of phase gates, anything coming through will get stuck in it. It's actually a good tactic, if a bit lame. When i've seen it used the phase gate was quite easily 'chompable', as was any unfortunate marines coming through.

And yes, when I see a gorge near a res spot i'm careful to run well around it. Standing on it is asking for trouble

Slightly off topic here but, It isn't rocket surgery to realise that standing infront of a stationary gorge is a recipe for getting built on. Stand to the side, don't think that if you make a nusiance of yourself the gorge will heal you faster. I will give you 2 warnings before I build right on you.

pfft stacking buildings, marine or alien is a art form not an exploit.

He seemed not to mind aliens stacking buildings to block an elevator...

    I agree.

Every time we play ns_nancy, I build the TF on top of the comm chair. It lets me guard both the TF, and the chair, with only two turrets And it makes the marines laugh, which is a good tension breaker against those dastardly aliens!

    Aaron,

Stacking alien structures seems OK, marines structures not. If you really want to know why its different rules for each, go ask Flayra.

Personally, it makes more sense aliens can make large 'organic' structures then marines stacking their structures.

How is stacking marine buildings an exploit, but the ability for aliens to clog elevators, trap marines in phase gates and infantry portals and build walls of lame NOT?

Eh, seems cheap to remove stacking for one side but not for the other. Blocking elevators or phase gates is kinda cheap, too.

I too think that stacking things is an art form. Whats wrong with it? I mean its a flat surface right? I dont think they should get rid of stacking but they should fix the stacking where you can stack in center and not have to stack to an odd angle. I mean if you have a bunch of men running around building stuff you would think they have some engineering skillz and enough of those skillz to be able to build on top of a flat surface... any flat surface. I think at least get a set standard like a turret factory on top of a armory but not vice versa and one turret on top of the factory and so on. I would say dont get rid of the stacking.. .just define it more. Keep the skill alive and dont noobify the game.

an elevated turret would have less coverage of an enemy on the ground, in fact the skulk could just walk up underneath it and chomp away without being hurt.
on the topic of changing things for one team and not the other, does anyone else think its logical to limit number of turrets per area like for offense chambers?

No it's not. Let the comm waste all his res on turrets and not on upgrades! I like marine commanders that don't upgrade.

Without having tested it I think there is a chance that an elevated turret would have better coverage considering it can shoot over other structures standing close to the structure the turret is sitting on top of. Giving attackers fewer "blind angles" to approach the marine structures without getting shot at. The price for this advantage is the vulnerability when aliens manage to get close to it.

I haven't actually tested if you get hit by a single elevated turret in case you get close to the structure. In theory you shouldn't get hit, but maybe your little skulk butt sticking out is enough for the turret to get you

Anyway this is not an issue soon seeing as how stacking marine structures won't be possible in NS 1.04 according to the rumours

I can stack marine turrets wel not always its a matter of speed and precisions.

you need to bind a key for turrets and spamm turrets but while u sspam slightly move your mouse and ur have ur self a turret on top of combo. btw u have 2 be v.qucik

I don't care how great of an engineer you are. There is a thing called Gravity. Turrets on top of turrets are gonna fall at the slightest breath of a skulk. In game though, two turrets on top of each other are just a double bonus for a circle strafing skulk.

Flayra already responded to another post about marine building stacking and said it was an exploit and will be fixed next patch.

Building a Turret on any flat surface should be ok, Marine has to reach it to build it. Use to be if you placed a Turret on a TF the alien HAD to kill the turret before it could do any damage to the TF. Havent tried it in a long time as comm holds no interest for me anymore.

As a playtester, I can confidently say that Flayra will be removing the ability of commanders to stack buildings. As far as I know, there are no plans to similarly limit aliens.

    In "defense" of elevator blocking:

    1) It's expensive; blocking an elevator like the ones on NS_Nothing requires at least 3-4 chambers, probably more to make sure marines can't get through anyway.

    2) The chambers are largely useless there, so the RPs spent don't go to any real gain for the aliens.

    3) A single siege turret will remove the problem, and can then be recycled to gain back some of the RPs required.

Please please please re-consider this, stacking doesnt ruin the gameplay it adds to it. Dont newbyfy the game...

Flay never intended stacking (for marines) to be in the game at all; it was specifically coded out in playtest. The fact that it showed up in 1.0 at all is a bug, nothing more.
  • Jett-OMEGAJett-OMEGA Join Date: 2002-11-07 Member: 7534Members
ok than. In the playtesters mind please explain to me the harm against benifit of stacking structures? Say just the ones with flat surfaces and with logical reasoning such as weight and mass. Please explain to me what damage is being done.

Weigh out the pro's and con's

    PRo ----------------------------------CON
minimize building area______ Cant rush in and get behind turret factory if off ground

develops more in depth strats______splash damage can take all things out in one wack

we can block elevators also___________it would cost more to do it than aliens

the list could go on.. seriously this would be a shame to remove from the game instead of improving apon it.

    comparison:

Its like handycapping the elite in CS by giving the noobs a shield.
