Cheaters Killed NS1 for me

edited April 2012 in NS2 General Discussion
Having read <a href="http://www.ns2hd.com/2012/04/performance-where-is-it-now-and-where.html" target="_blank">http://www.ns2hd.com/2012/04/performance-w...-and-where.html</a> I have found that the concept of NS was based around it being able to modified.

This has now disturbed me because it was the unashamed cheating that took place in NS1 that killed it for me.

Is this going to a problem with NS2 too? From what I can see, the cheaters were the people that administrated the servers, and with their "mods" they cheated.

EDIT BELOW

For the Record - My mind has been at least partly put to rest. See my post for 17/04/12 09:53 PM on page 3.

It is problematic that the Lua-scripts are open-source, as it is exceedingly easy to sneak some malicous script in there. Very easy. Trust me when I say that. Even when scripts will be hash-checked.

    What are you talking about?
In the 8 years I played NS1 I encountered maybe 10 speedhackers and about 3 aimbotters, that's it.

I bet the vast majority of "unshamed cheaters" were just better than you.

What makes me a sad panda is i passed this to Flayra and it don't seem like this is a big issue to them due to it being in a beta right now. Id like to know what style anti cheat they will have and if they will have more then one. We all know VAC sucks. Maybe a mix of VAC and Punkbuster, taking screen shots of ones computer from a panel would be good.

If it's so easy to hack then it should be easy to come up with your own cheater detection tool.

As I understand OPs post he means mod like AMX mod and other metamodplugins, not real cheaters.
And he is afraid that you can't play vanilla NS anymore.

Just feel that players should be informed if there are any secret "mods" that can be exploited.

Changing the look of things is one thing, and yes this is a cool part of NS, but aimbots and godmode are not fun and take the fun out of the game. Initially for other players and ultimately for the addicted user of cheats.

I guess you didn't spectate that much. For the record, if you suspect someone of cheating, just spectate them. You can CLEARLY see that their movement is not human but mechanical.

I've never seen admins exploiting amxmod other than using it for jokes. And I never knew about an aimbot coming with the amxmod.
Both true for NS, HLDM and Counterstrike.

But i don't like this stuff, too. Especially xmenu for NS, the co mode was absolutely unenjoyable since then. Or any kind of downloadable content other than Maps when connecting to a server. This destroyed many games programmed in UT and Quake engines. And source. And maybe many more.

Yea [VH2] was cheater clan known for mechanical movement.

Not that I remember any cheating in NS1 from late 1.04.

Actually, "mechanical" movement can also be indicative of a really good player. For instance, take <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U553p021pRE" target="_blank">quad</a> from the game TF2. He plays the fastest-moving class in the game, the Scout. One time, an experiment was performed on quad by a staff member of a certain European TF2 league. Said person sent in a demo of a 1v1 vs quad, saying that he was cheating. The members of a demo-reviewing team chalked it up to aimbotting, although they had zero evidence. These guys had a history of wrongly banning players. They were eventually fired and the experimenter wrote an <a href="http://pastebin.com/bjUuwn0c" target="_blank">essay</a> conveying his apologies to quad. Quad was not renown at the time, but he went on to play for some top Euro teams.

Ofc, in NS2, it may be easier to tell who is aimbotting and so forth due to some truly unpredictable alien movements. It's very unlikely that every one of your bullets will hit a skulk that dances around you, for example. While all cheaters should be caught, I just hope that really good players will not be wrongly mistaken for hacking.

I think it's something to do with fear, these people are scared about what it would mean if cheaters ruined their favourite online game, I guess denial is an easy way of dealing with that fear a bit like covering your ears and shouting loudly when something is saying something you don't want to hear.

The more popular this game will be the more cheats we'll have. Just look at counter strike, there is nothing you can do about the really "good" cheats, eg private hacks. They virtually go undetected by the anti-cheat engines for years and some go as far as modifying drivers or the operating system itself.

Also the manual detection of cheaters is of course problematic, especially when you have to judge a player that just might be good or might be using a highly refined aimbot that only serves as minimal "aim correction" and is virtually not visible. (seems to be popular in leagues like ESL).

However, some attempts to keep out the majority of cheaters would be nice and are neccessary in the long run.

Or maybe it's because he grossly overstated the cheating problem in NS1 and, since there are other major pressing issues to worry about, this non-factor can sit on the bench until it becomes important.

Granted, I'm sure the devs will say they're working on/have plans for some kind of anti-cheat, but honestly, who cares? Cheaters were incredibly rare in NS1 and I don't have any reason to think they'll be commonplace in NS2.

Except that NS1 was closed-source, whereas NS2 provides a million-billion ways to sneak script in.

No, it has everything to do with the OP believing NS1 is/was infested with cheaters, which is absurd. If you're even a semi-decent player you have been accused of cheating dozens of times over the years and the OP has voluntarily taken on the mantle of being that jerk who makes spurious cheat accusations.

Yeah well, but that is when the problem arrives. You just need one program to lie to the server; eg which sends legit hashes to the server despite using files with non legit hashes and you'll be able to have any cheats though mods. Though obviously a real "hack" would be in place that modifies the network packets :P

anti cheat software doesnt work anyway

by far the best method to stop hackers is for servers to have good server admins and a good community that helps in dealing with hackers.

What UWE should do is allow the engine to record and save games similar to how the Half Life Engine does. That way people can record hacking and then upload the file when they are reporting a hacker.
