NS2 Australian community website

MakoMako Join Date: 2011-07-04 Member: 107766Members
<div class="IPBDescription">naturalselection.com.au</div>The Aussie community has been pulling together pretty tight recently to try and get up a replacement home after our beloved Aus Pure servers had to be taken down. We know that will come right soon, with that in mind and after a few people suggesting it thought it was about time we had a little online place to call our own.

We now have the domain naturalselection2.com.au and in the process of putting up an Australian community website and forums. I was wondering when to announce this but think its worth getting everyone involved right from the beginning, as its the communities site we should all have input. Please let me know your thoughts/suggestions.

The foundation of the site is Drupal7, I havent made a final decision on forum tech - Drupal vanilla (with advanced forum module) or phpBB / myBB?

<u><b>Initial ideas for the site are:</b></u>

good functional forums for the community, a place where friendly mature discussion is applauded but freedom of speech is allowed (might have a way to mark down plonkers like Alchemy ;) )
its NOT a place to hide away from the rest of the NS2 community and we will be linking to official forum posts etc quite often
private and public sections for each aussie clan to discuss tactics and arrange recruitment
articles by the community regarding tactics
a news page maintained by the community (not things like Arkanti's cat just fell out of a tree)

<u><b>What we need:</b></u>

Someone with sketching skillz who could put together an awesome logo - thinking something with native animals hanging out with the Kharaa. Koalas hanging off the hive, wombats riding the back of Onos, Kangaroo with a skulk in its pouch - ###### like that.

Someone with photoshop skillz who wants to do website background (decorate our home)- liking the idea of a clean light interface with cool art style infestation wrapping around all over the place.

Good tacticians who want to contribute to content writing.

People on the NS pulse who have a way with words and want be news mans/womans.

Anyone with Drupal7 skillz who wants to also be involved in backend dev.

Giving people the option to log in via steam would be cool. <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/dev" target="_blank">http://steamcommunity.com/dev</a>

This could also be useful further down the line if you end up using the site for server management or tournament organisation.

I run my own community for a different game.

I have experince with joomla, phpbb, ip.board and vbulletin if you need any help. Can also do photoshop work and a bit of html, css, PHP & mySQL. I'm pretty stretched for time at the moment though so no guarantees.

I bet you will have plenty of time to troll the forums when they are up though!

I have no experience in these things but as a suggestion - The fourm feature where you can down vote a comment if it's de-railing a thread or just a troll and X amount of down votes minimise the comment.

Yup, I think this too - will put it on the list. Also thanks for the offer to assist glimmerman - I also have no spare time so thats why I want to get this up and have the community tend to it like galactic gardeners !!!

For the background and logo, throw up threads once you get the forums going. I am sure a few of us would be willing to submit something for consideration.

depending on if you want to spend money or not, a joomla/phpbb3 combo can work well, you will need a bridge to link the two sites together though which sorta half works, or you can keep them as separate entities with a similar theme so it "looks" like they integrate.

Easiest thing for now though would be to throw up a phpbb forum, should only take a hour or so to get something basic up.

Who are you using to host your web server?

Looked up ausns.org and it is currently owned by ausgamers. Might be a good idea to ask them if you can grab that domain as well?

Not planning on spending any coin really, just time. I have developed with Joomla in the past but prefer Drupal for security and scalability. Will most likely end up going the Drupal7 and phpBB bridged route. Using Jumba as the webhost. Also any other domains you wanted to pick up and forward to the site would be cool by me.

Also Mako, I think that the domain name may be too similar and many people will just go to www.naturalselection.com by mistake and generally become confused.

    Thoughts?

Perhaps you could come up with just a name like 'NSPlayer' did back in the day (An old rival Australian NS community for those who dont know).

chickswith######s.com was taken, thought naturalselection2.com.au was a good alternative but im open to suggestions.

[EDIT] wtf, I cant use the short name for Richard on this forum? Also we have to remember that Darwin came up with his idea before UWE made the game so our community is always going to be competing with that ;)

    TheInfantryPortal.com.au
    PhaseGate.com.au
    ReadyRoom.com.au

Clever name play on the game is always memorable.

I agree with the issues raised about the domain name:
    a) it's too long
    b) it's too similiar to the .com one

Out of the 3 names mentioned above, readyroom.com.au sounds the best.

    Readyroom already exists.

    <a href="http://www.readyroom.com.br/vns2/" target="_blank">http://www.readyroom.com.br/vns2/</a>

I dont mind theinfantryportal.com.au or maybe just - theip.com.au if you want it shorter. The catch phrase on the site could be, "we need an infantry portal!". Oh yeah, theres my Marketing Degree coming out in spades.

Dam, I was going to say ReadyRoom sounds like a good one.

I don't mind something simple and encompassing like AusNS2.com.au.

I was going to suggest F4.com.au, but some random place took it...
  • MakoMako Join Date: 2011-07-04 Member: 107766Members
I actually really like the idea of readyroom.com.au - thats a goodun but its been taken (and its not NS related!).
What about auspure ,named after the Endar servers?

.com.au and .com are both taken on that one but could go .net
