some of the sc pros moved on to poker and in kind of a way if you think about it a little bit of randomness is good for the game from this perspective they are very similar

Depending on your starting position pretty much dictates the type of strat to use, which I think is awesome.

    Keep random starts I say.

Random spawn is a good idea if the map is made around it. But both tram and summit were made with fixed spawn in minds, that is why we have so many broken matchups.(such as if aliens spawn in shipping in tram and marines in repair).

I prefer the NS1 method of fixed marine, random alien spawn. Adds to the disparity between marines and aliens.

edit: Plus I think it leads to more interesting map design as the maps do not have to be symmetrical.

Wow, how boring would it get if everyone knew where the other is? Part of what makes early game in ns1 and ns2 fun is not knowing where the aliens are.

It's up to the mappers to decide whether the map has random spawns or not, and on which side. Some upcoming maps will feature the "static marine, random alien" system. And then there's some competitive versions of maps already which have made spawns completely static.

Generally random is bad, or rather, close positions are. (For competitive play)

I see where you are coming from, in that for a competative game you dont believe someone should draw the upper hand purely because they were lucky enough to get a better spawning location.

But this is more of an issue mappers must address to make sure their maps remain somewhat balanced wherever you spawn. It just means teams have to adjust what they will do depending on their and their enemies spawn locations, which Is a point I brought up earlier in the thread. At the end of the day, the team that is more skilled and well rounded to use different methods of attack are the ones that will win in the end.

And please, Pubby? I played competative NS for some of the top Australian clans, at a stage possibly the best clan in the country at the time.

and this is something that never happens in any game because mappers are bad, developers are bad and players are bad

I mean, we still have ztn in quake 1 with awful spawns. The most symmetric TF2 maps have to be played in 'halves' with teams swapping sides because imbalances are never addressed. Starcraft has symmetric maps in a desparate attempt to solve balance problems, and that just shows tremendous imbalances between the various units/abilities.

Look at how many patch notes there are for server room and warehouse on Tram. Think of how many hours have gone into trying to polish that turd instead of fixing more important and fun parts of the game. AAAAH!

I'm a random spawn and I find this thread EXTREMELY (notice the caps) offensive. I think this is the part where I say inb4lock or whatever.

I want to see the OP's "competitive" experience. In full detail.

Random spawns forces teams to come up with different strategies. Thats what makes competitive teams and competitive gameplay so unique, not just follow a set pattern in the tech tree everytime.

If UWE wants, they can easily add an option to disable it. If not, the competitive scene can write a mod. Problem solved.

hello and thank you for your interest! here is a screenshot of one of the rare times i deigned to play on a pub and the exploits i had to use just to make absolutely sure the scrubs knew who they were messing with .

for further reading i would suggest making yourself familiar with this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Past_NS_Competition_Winners. god bless your sweet pubbie head.

I'm just here to call the op an asshat. In the spirit of being constructive however, here is my useless 'pubber' opinion. Random spawn points or more related to the designer maps and not the overall philosophy of the game. I think the random songs are a fine addition and offer variety to the game. If the competitive community is so against them but of course they can be disabled for competitive play.

Lastly, op, remember this game isn't for you. It's for all of us. Unless you want to spend $3000 for a copy of ns2 you shoul
    d get used to us.

Typos from my phone. Not worth fixing.
