Would make darkness much more awesome, each marine would have more of a personal flashlight, not one big jumbled up crappy group of flashlights with lots of annoying atmospheric stuff blocking their view.

more distance from the wall (this is around 90%of the light radius.

I know what you're thinking.
It should be wider since it's meant for darkness combat stuff.

I'm pretty sure the Exosuit will have some pretty epic flood lights. **wink wink nudge nudge**

    I like this idea.

Also the potential Exo-Suits with bright lights!

YEA! it's too small and need a shining glow from forward!

If it's really to small, has to be tested. The size of the cone can simply be changed.
Can you make a picture of how it looks from the view of another player?
The floodlight idea on Heavy Suits sound cool.

How about this? The center would be very bright for illuminating distant objects, whereas the outer area of the ring would be very dim. I've often hid in the ceiling of warehouse hitting marines with parasites, and the flashlight isn't powerful enough to find me unless they climb up the ladder.

My biggest problem with the flashlight is how it looks from the third person. When you're with other people their lights really wash out everything.

    Alright I"m revising it now.
But steam is down for me.... can't load levels.
    Gets stuck on authenticating. :(

    BIG UPDATE TO THE FLASHLIGHT

    Expects lots of hugs.

    <img src="http://i40.tinypic.com/oac5sn.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Still messing with the values however.

Like in starcraft you can do this kind of cheese move. I dont see how this is a problem as the marines are so capable of defending a rush as a squad(s). The aliens can also do the same as having marines show up on infestation gives them enough of an advantage to likely defend a rush attack.

Rushing can be so easily countered... i dont see whats the issue here. You may ask me to list the counters if you want, there is a LIST of counter-rush strategies.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Exactly, now diffuse it a little bit and you got a winner!

    Something like this:

    <img src="http://meetrajesh.com/telescopy/img/20061123.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

As for the marine washout, it would show the washout beam in a much narrower focus due to the increased concentration of light in the middle, but it wouldn't wash out the entire screen.

So make the small circle fade into the bigger one a little bit mmmk

and for the washout. I've already reduced its amount by 60%
but the center should already be double anyway.

It doesn't have to fade into it, if that's hard to do. Just add a few rings around it to add to the transition (you can see that's how the flashlight on the wall image works, it's not actually diffusing, it's just got rings of focus).

I give you many hugs for your flashlight, but the transition between the concentrated center and the dimmer outer cone is very sharp and feels unnatural.

Adding the rings would be an issue, IT CAN BE DONE, but............ would be pretty unoptimized. It would require more lights.
I do have a few ideas on how to make it feel natural though.

Still looks kinda funny, but better :P. Maybe the good ol' NS2 dev team would be able to work with it some more to give it a smoother appearance. Given the circumstances, it gets my seal of approval.

I really dont like this. It looks like you have 2 flying spotlights with the origin starting shortly before the light before fades out. (while its not the way you did it, it looks like that)

UWE said many times, they will add textures for lights.

I much prefer the single spotlight for now than this.

    Example light:
    <a href="http://img80.exs.cx/img80/3483/AIHigh.jpg" target="_blank">http://img80.exs.cx/img80/3483/AIHigh.jpg</a>

Example texture: (not from the same light)
    <a href="http://www.packtpub.com/sites/default/files/Article-Images/2923OS_04_06.png" target="_blank">http://www.packtpub.com/sites/default/file...923OS_04_06.png</a>

we need more threads about this...
  • FragmagnetFragmagnet Join Date: 2010-07-26 Member: 72873Members
The 3 lights arn't supposed to make it textured
They're supposed to give it more range with some logic put into it.
    dimmest goes away first etcetc
  • Tool8Tool8 Join Date: 2012-01-01 Member: 139405Members
Even though your version of the flashlight is not so bad I have to agree with Koruyo here. I think textured lights are the way to go.
  • FragmagnetFragmagnet Join Date: 2010-07-26 Member: 72873Members
People still don't understand what I made here.

The middle of this flashlight goes farther than the outside.

If you made a textured flashlight.

It would all go the same distance.
    Unless you had texture falloff.

I think a combination of textured flashlights with progressive range increases for the center would make for the best experience. If I'm in a dark room, glancing about, I might not see the skulk hiding there unless I pass it through the center.

How about letting the devs take care of this?

They should be able to adjust the current version rather easily.
