In the meantime I have had a look at my the settings on my BT Homehub 2 and under the firewall and supported applications tab

For Steam Games the settings seem to be as follows:-

    Port Range Translate to
    TCP 27020-27050 27020-27050
    UDP 27020-27050 27020-27050
    TCP 27015 27015

Is this correct? I do not have problems with other steam games (other than being a lousy shot).<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    you need 27016 too.

Please can you be a bit more explicit. I tried extending the range to cover 27016 but to no avail so I may have not done it properly.

I don't know much about the game but I do know I was having that problem before I upgraded my computer. From what I could gather my computer specs were unable to load the game visually so then it would throw back that error to me. Try creating your own game rather then joining, and just see if the game loads. If it doesn't or it takes like 10 minutes to load then you need an upgrade to play mate

    TDP: 27015 - 27016
    UDP: 27015 - 27016

The ports need to be open on your router for NS2 to work properly, and forwarded to your gaming machine.

I would adjust your translation to

    TCP 27015-27050 27015-27050
    UDP 27015-27050 27015-27050

    and delete the TCP 27015

Ok I made the suggested port changes to the router and forwarded to my machine.

Still get the authentication timed out message when I try and join a game.

I tried to start my own game and the game crashed with this in the log.txt

told you it's cos you can <b>no longer run the game</b> :p I wouldn't know what steps to take from here or if it can be avoided. Like I said I was having the exact same issue, couldn't even create my own game. Then BAM upgraded my PC hardware and i'm playing full screen 125 fps :)

When I bought the game my pc met the criteria as stated.

Maybe it is only a temporary issue that as the game gets more polished it will work again.

Is there an up to date minimum spec you (or anyone else) could direct me to?

Having the same issue, but only on certain servers. Others work fine. Port forwarded, firewall is fine. Also does this on other steam games, tf2, cs, so im thinking this could be the router (crappy bt homehub 2.0). Did you find a fix? Anyone else got any clues?

I'm having the exact same issues as OP. There seem to be no fixes and no response from any of the developers. The problem seems to be entirely related to certain routers. I've played without problems on all the of the settings at other locations but with my current router, a ClearSpot 4g wireless router I cannot connect to any server and always have a timeout after a long authentication.

Hope there is a fix or at least some acknowledgment. This is of Build 248. I doubt OP's problem has been solved either...

Have you forwarded the Ports mentioned in some of the other Posts here?
    Perhaps post your log.txt too

Generally, the issue with not being able to authenticate has to do with being unable to connect to the steam servers.

The first thing to check is if the steam friends list is up for you and working.

I know this seems dumb but there seems to be a scheduled down time occasionally.

If you have access to steam friends and still cant get into the game I would try forwarding ports as mentioned in various parts above.

As always log.txt would be most helpful:)

The file is here: %appdata%/Natural Selection 2/log.txt AKA username/AppData/Roaming/Natural Selection 2/log.txt

The log doesn't seem to say much.

    Build 248

    Loading config://ConsoleBindings.json
    Loading config://FavoriteServers.json
    Loading config://HistoryServers.json
Main Menu Initialized at Version: 248

I'll see if I can figure out the port forwarding fixes.

Welp, still having the same problem. I'm not familiar at all with router settings so it may have been a mistake on my part but I set up a tcp/udp 27014 to 27050 and enabled dmz. Was a little confused on what to put for LAN IP

I have tested a bit and I'm able to create my own server. I don't know if other people can connect to it though.

This is a problem I've had with the game since launch and specifically with this router. I'm able to play many other games (steam and non-steam) multiplayer without any similar problems.

I should just add that once I bought a more modern PC last year my problems disappeared.

Nice man. Glad its working for you. Don't think that'll help my situation. I've played 40 hours of ns2 no more than a month a go until the router switch

Have you tried the suggestions on the first page of the stickied "Connection problems" thread?

Thanks for pointing that out! I tried switching the wifi channel. Here's the new log

    http://pastebin.com/vj8V45sY

I saw some similar posts of the first page, was there a direct fix for those? The other fixes didn't seem to apply. (Restricting steam max ping to 500 did kick me out of authentication faster though.)

    @deafturtle
    Did you try
Go to your router's settings (you may need to google how to do this with your particular router model) and change this:
Max NAT/Firewall Session Per User : Change from default 1024 to the max 4096
    ?

Authentication is on steam's end.. so also try changing your server/region by going to Steam > Settings > Downloads tab > download region ... to something else.
Now ensure steam is definitely online. (and not in offline mode)
    Restart it.
    Try again.
    Godspeed, warrior.
