"Squad Five"

Other than playtesting for long hours in the day, I have hobbies too! Recently, I was asked by a lot of the testers to make a dubstep track that was nothing but NS sound clips.

Well, after a week or so... here it is... "Squad Five". It's free to download, so you can bump it in your 95' Ford Taurus! Hope you enjoy it, and I hope it inspires other musicians out there to make some NS/NS2-related music!

Not into standard Dubstep anyway, but what might need some work is that the transitions between the different samples are extremely harsh, which make the middle part of the track feel a bit disconnected.
You also should have used the old nano shield sound as bass drum :P
I also noticed a fair amount of clipping/buzzing/droning (not sure what to call it) in some of your other stuff, you might want to work on that. (e.g. on Fire On A Stick starting at 1:00, sounds horrible on my headphones)

But I don't want to critizise you too much, I can be pretty demanding sometimes when it gets to music. :P Good job, keep going.

sounds nice man. strangely reminded me of a video my and my brother made about evil killer stuffed clowns infesting our house way back in middle school. I used the skulk's bite, leap and 'getting shot' sounds for when the clowns were attacking. And by attacking I mean people hiding under the couch cushions would throw them at us. Thanks for bringing back a fun, fond, and slightly idiotic memory.

I quite liked the creative way the clips were used, and I thought it sounded quite nice overall. I do, however, share the sentiment that the middle section seems a bit disjoined (probably due to the lack of an encompassing, unifying element).

Ah man, I miss that sound so bad...

    "You're squad one..."
    "You're squad two.."
    "You're squad three."
    "You're Squad Four!"
    "<b>YER SQUAD FIVE!!</b>"

Even though I'm not into this kind of music, I really enjoyed it.

In the middle section I would have kept the drums and rhythm a bit louder, while toning down the lead effects.

Otherwise, this is awesome. If I make any NS2 montages, I know what song I'm using :)

Cool stuff, first the MvM maps, now NS2 music.
This is starting to feel like the old NS forums again <img src="http://145.53.60.247:9008/bestanden/pics/marine_bigsmile.GIF" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Yeah, I really didn't spend a whole lot of time working on it as it was just for fun. I'm still a bit amateur when it comes to mastering my tracks, but the good news is that I've gotten better since Fire on a Stick by just correcting some of my mistakes. I've only been at this for a little over a year, so lots of things to work on!

I use FL Studio 10 Producer Edition. I'd like to move over to something a little better like Live, but I don't have the money for it.

And yes, because the dubstep ball sound was removed was pretty much why I was asked. We would good around sometimes with that and the radar sound a bit. "Whoop whoop, BUNG BUNG BUNG!" Glad you guys enjoyed it!

Way too loud, there is barely any dynamic in it, it's almost static. Play a little more with the loudness of each instrument if you don't want listeners to get headaches. Alternatively make less use of compressors.
    The idea is this:
On good equipment – if you turn up the volume – it should have enough dynamics that new detail appears instead of everything just getting louder and noisy. Your track there is almost static, I suggest you learn more about mixing and mastering, it would improve the quality of your music a lot.

Nice job :) Maybe a bit more game sounds would have been nice, but as I understood it's not possible to get the sound directly.

Yeah, as I was saying before, I didn't really spend too much time with this. A couple days at most. There's only one compressor on the master track. I could probably spend some more time on it and make it better, but it's not something I was too serious about. It was just something for fun. Thanks for the tips, though!

For my taste a little bit "too light going" in some parts, like Dghelneshi said: The middle part feels disconnected
And the middle part is what most people expect from "gaming related dubstep" these days, lot's of whobble and hard basses :D

But cool work, i still like the transitions with the voice overs!

Thanks rebirth! I was just telling Cory this the other day. Some people expect a lot more from dubstep while some really don't feel this is how dubstep should sound like. Everyone's taste is different and it's hard to get it right for everyone. I mainly use a keyboard and mouse to make all my music, and since I do it as a hobby, I don't really take it too seriously. I just like to make music because it's something that comes naturally I guess.

I think its pretty close to being really good but needs some work in the center part, it does seem a bit disconnected but it had alot of potential.

Thanks Bones! If they did something like that, I'd invest all my time and energy into making something really awesome for you all!
