Low graphics settings?

Help me run this on my poor laptop!
I normally play on a pretty beefy desktop machine. Right now I'm trying to play on my laptop for a fun little project.

It's like a year or two old, has a first generation mobile i5 and some kind of decent dedicated graphics.
I'm running on 720x480 and getting pretty stable fps over all, but there are some things I'd like to change:

lighting effects and other things that would look good on another machine don't (and they could be spared for more precious frames to shoot spikes at marines)

the HUD and most of the GUI seems to be scaling really badly

My native resolution is 1366x768, but I'm running the game at 720x480 as I said.
If I pull up the server list, it's so crunched that I can't see any of the entries to click on them. In game, the HUD elements (like my selected weapon, health, saytext, server messsages, kill notices) are all enormous.

Is there a guide somewhere for changing stuff like this with console options? Are there options like that? Are there deliberately "low quality"-looking settings (like turning off textures and forcing player models in quake)?

If somebody can point me in the right direction I'll close the thread - it's not really a 'discussion' topic...

Thanks in advance!

Just found http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/wiki/inde...onsole_Commands after 2 seconds of searching.

I'll play around with the rendering commands a bit and see if I can pull off something smooth. If I can, this game is just that much more awesome.
    Cheers!

I'm running with an A8-3850 OC'd 3.3 ghz desktop and really can't get much performance out of the HD 6550D it comes with, I play on Medium settings (setting it to low doesn't change the frame rate at all strangely) and on an 1280x720 resolution. so I can't really see anything other than high end laptops even having the game be playable sadly. :(

I also have problems with the UI at very low resolutions

Mainly the server screen and the armory purchase screen
You cant buy any guns because part of the other UI covers it up at very low resolutions

FYI guys, for buying at the armory with lower resolutions (ie, can't click the guns with your mouse):

    1) Stand close to armory
    2) Open up console (~)
    3) Enter "buy X"

    X being:

    127 for shotgun
    129 for nade launcher
    130 for flamethrower
    ??? for mines (anyone)?

I've been meaning to make a thread on here for UWE, but some scaling down of the UI at lower resolutions would go a long way for making the game more playable for a lot of us. We can't all run NS2 at our native resolutions yet, and seeing server adds and "This extractor gives you 1 resource every 8 seconds, protect it!" run across your reticule as you're trying to track a skulk for the 18th million time gets old.

And yes, server browser crunches at the lowest two resolutions, blocking off the showing of any servers. Unfortunately, the lowest resolution also gives the highest fps.

Some other general tips to increase your fps though:

    In console:

    r_shadows 0
    r_flash 0
    r_bloom 0
    r_atmospherics 0
r_fog 0 (just heard about this one? Probably is taken care of in atmospherics, but w/e)
r_gui 0 (removes hud, might help)

I've heard you have to redo after each server change/round??

r_fog does nothing (I think people are thinking of r_atmospherics)
    I would also add in
    r_instancing 0
    r_aa 0
And, yes, on map change you have to redo the commands atm. Until this is fixed, you can run fsfod's menu mod which lets you set atmospherics, bloom, and AA in the options.

r_fog definitely does do something. it's especially noticeable in mineshaft. also, turning instancing off would be a bad thing.

    I can't even join servers at 1024x768

I have no problems at 1280x720, i guess the extra width helps.

A workaround if you want to play at that res is to get the IP from a site like: http://www.play4dead.com/ns2/?servers=1 and type in connect xxx.xx.xxx.xxx:27015

it would be very nice to have a "lowPCmode" were every model has low polygones and very cheap textures (64x64 ^^) but its (understandably!) way to much work for the Devs.
