    Two words for ya:
    Vertex manipulation

    Then you'd better teach me how to add vertex points to your single brush solid, because I didn't know it was possible, and thats the only way to do as you describe.

    oh thats easy. select 2 of the yellow points on a single side, then use Ctrl + F
    makes a nice new white line to manipulate <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Well thats what i've been missing. Im going to fix all my stained glass window arches so they are a single brush instead of 7.
  • Lord_RequiemLord_Requiem Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9481Members
    What if you dont have 2 yellow points on a single side.
  • MuntyMunty Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2972Members, Constellation
    So I helped then? Woo I'm happy now <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
    erm but you could just make the glass window into a box with a texture on.. i think that would save some faces.. look slightly messy in WC view, but saving planes is what counts i supose..

    Nevermind nevermind nevermind. I found it.

    Erm... Each time you click on the vertex manip button the way its manipulated is changed... And I ment on a single face, not a single line.
    The 3 diferent vertex mode things are as follows:
    1: corners have white points, middle of lines have a yellow point.
    2: corners have white points, no other vertex points
    3: corners and middle oflines have yello points

    erm.. if ya wait a bit i could probably post a few pics <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    -edit-

    was writing this while you were replying -_-;;
    i wont bother with the pics then <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Trust me, you've done enough. The CTRL-F is the single most useful thing I've learned in the last 3 days.

    And Angel: I tried to PM you but I dont think its working. You can post the pics here.

    Ok. Some examples of where ^Requiem^ could improve his planes usage.

    Although you no longer need em, someone might so ill just post some *small* pictures of the Ctrl-F thingy
    the pictures are at about 20% or so of their normal size so they might be a bit hard to see...
    -edit-
    ill put piccys up if i can find somewhere to put the images up for the links... somewhere that actually works preferably...

    Oh yeah those propane tanks can go I totally forgot about those. It was a prefab anyway and a really poorly made one at that I put it in to see if the room would look good as a chemical storage room (it does) but those really suck. The columns in the atrium can't go anywhere, I can see if I can vertex them down some but I dont think so they are already pretty good polycount wise. The picture of the arches is already fixed, vertex manipulation got them all to 1 solid each. (14 windows total i believe knocked down from 6 solids to 1 thanks to the CTRL-F thing I didnt know about) The curved hallway isnt working out as well, I cant think of what to put there so I tried to make it interesting with a curved area, it sucks even with it I'll redo that hallway I think. Lets find out what plane count is now that I've turned about 30 multi brush items into 1 brush...

    And as to my piccys, i cant se em, so i think geocites doont like direct linkages <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
    Question: where do you guys host images you want to show on the boards?
    -edit-
    Eh ill post em seperately on this thread for now.. Each with a handy caption.
    *rolls eyes*
    Must help the ppl who havnt seen this in the old worldcraft help files after all.. Although i think they removed the vertex manip tutorials after WC 1.1 or something <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Down to 90 percent without deleting anything major (except those beautiful marine spawn spotlights... waaaaaaa)

    I'll delete those propane tanks and fix a few more brushes and try it again.

    Vertex Manip. Adding faces.

    1: select 2 yellow dots on the fame face
  • MuntyMunty Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2972Members, Constellation
    2: while the yellow dots are selected press Ctrl-F
  • MuntyMunty Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2972Members, Constellation
    3: more the new face around and exit vertex manip, or do more alterations if you want to

    Requiem, the curves hallways are fine, but only curve them on the <i>inside</i>. Like that arch I posted only streached out longer.

    Another thing with curved ceilings and columns, try ands see how few edges you can get away with. You can get some great savings by having slighly less curvey curves and even they can mainly be smoothed out during RAD (-smooth).

    <s>Munty you can attach 1 picture per post (see that bit under the post icons section), so long as the picture is under a certain filesize.</s>

    Never mind, you worked it out. Nice one. I didn't know about that trick.

    Munty: Thanks for the tip, CTRL-F is all you had to say. I immediatly went and fixed 14 complicated arches. and tons of other things I'd wanted to fix forever but couldn't because i didnt know how to add points in vertex tool.

    Heh... probably shouldnt have done that on these boards, but what the hey. Just remember when you doing vertex manipulation that:
    convex = good
    and
    concave = bad

    Requim: glad i could help, though the piccys are for anyone else that didnt know about the Ctrl-F thingy.
    Angel: I noticed the attach picture box just now, but it only lets you add 1 picture to the post, so i was wonder what hjosts ppl use when they put those image links in the post itself.

    Those 2 propane tanks = 4 percent of total allowed. Amazing. Im down to 86 percent now, which should be more than enough to finish the layout and 3rd hive. I'll have to go back and do more tidying up when I detail each room that isnt done now, but thanks so much for the advice guys.

    Thats a lota planes for 2 objects o_O
    Any idea on what the max number of planes or brushes is?
    (aside: have you ever tryed to play a compile map thats run outta clipnodes? its very... wired... -_-;; )
  • MuntyMunty Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2972Members, Constellation
    Just one last thing: ya know there are 3 modes to the clipping tool too dont ya?
    delete everything on 1 side, delete everything on the other, and cut object down the line.
    that last mode can make some iffy errors if the points no longer match up to the grid.. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I can never get the clipper to work. I usually end up vertex manipulating it manually. Know any good tutorials for the clipper?

    <a href='http://www.vlatitude.com/tutorials.php?tutID=51' target='_blank'>http://www.vlatitude.com/tutorials.php?tutID=51</a>

    Thats where i learned it, and its a very useful tool. I used it exclusively for andromeda except rare occasions where it wouldnt do what i wanted and I had to use vertex. I'll be using vertex a lot more now that i know about CTRL-F tho.

    Nice tutorial.. i learned how to clip things on the fly <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
    Only thing i cant see them mention is that cliped objects arnt always aligned to grid properly. This can make texture not aligned to world errors, but also can cause problems when you compile. For instance on my map parts of a coridor didnt aling properly thx to clip, so although it looks fine in WC view, when it was compiled it caused a leak in my map. Thank god for pointfiles, only way i found it <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
    you can solve this problem with snap to grid, but it would of messed up the coridor: so i just extruded the walls into the roof ever so slightly <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Might of missed that though as I only skimmed it.

    And bah to my grammer and spelling <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I always have align to grid on and clip has never messed me up that way. Vertex on the other hand........l

    Really? Vertex hasnever messed for me, but cliping has totally messed up some of my brushes..
    A few times cliping has managed to make the world alingment error unfixable too. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> So when i cant fix it i usually end up having to undo my work, or having to delete the piece and redo it <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->
    And i ment snap selected to grid, not align to grid *sweatdrop* Specially as all the original objects are aligned to grid anyways.

    The only instance in which the clip tool will mess up your brushes is if those brushes are already invalid. Otherwise, it's perfectly safe.

    Quick point: Be sure that ALL the vertices of the brush you're clipping/vertex manipulating fit nicely on the 1x1x1 grid. If they don't, then the brush will be changed very slightly during compiling so its vertices ARE on the grid. This is a common mistake, (and a common cause of leaks) especially apparent when you carve a cylinder into a wall and then resize the entire wall. I don't reccomend carving, especially not with cylinders. Use the clip tool instead, and work on the 1x1x1 grid.

    Quick tip: Hold down <b>Ctrl</b> whilst dragging your clip line, and the entire line will move and not just the end you're grabbing. Also, don't forget that clicking on the tool more than once will change how it works. (Remove side A / Remove side B / Leave all, and just clip)
