Mass Effect 3 on Origin

<div class="IPBDescription">Seriously</div><a href="http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/323/index/8975536" target="_blank"><!--QuoteBegin-Chris Priestly+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Chris Priestly)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin--></a><b>4) Will ME3 be available on Steam?</b>
During initial release Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time. Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content. We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

He's kidding us ? This is a joke or something like that ? What won't he say : "We'll try to make more money with our own store" ?

When I look at NS2, it doesn't seem Steam is a restrictive environment.

"Our plattform is horrible, how do we make people use it?"
"Update/fix it and remove the "beta" from it as it officially isn't a beta?"
"No, also, hush. We release anticipated games almost exclusively on it! And then we'll use the disgruntled pirates as another excuse to say the PC market is dying and promote harsher DRM that will only hurt our real customers anyway."
    "Brilliant."

This comes as a surprise? I've seen this coming for a while now. ME3 is a "killer app" just like BF3, it's exactly what Origin needs to gain market share.

Mass Effect 2 is the last good game bioware made. Every single game since has been utter trash and I fear ME3 will be the same.

(Don't forget to buy your ME3 action figures for exclusive in-game DLC)

You could also argue this is about setting a president: If EA's little-shop-that-could flourishes it could potentially lead the way to all the publishers setting up their own shops in an attempt to mimic the success. How many logins and steam-a-likes do you fancy dealing with on a daily basis? :p

I'm all for competition and open market and all that jazz but this isn't the way I want to start it, personally :3

I feared this was going to happen. Any further statement on what those "other 3rd party digital retailers" are? Not that it really matters though I guess, since...

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><b>1) Will Origin be a requirement to play all versions of Mass Effect 3? (Digital and/or from a retail brick and mortar store)</b>
Yes, Origin is required for all PC editions of Mass Effect 3, physical or digital.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

... you'll have to install it anyway. I first thought of going to the store to get this one and save me the hassle of having yet another account as Gem puts it, but oh well.

This isn't just an Origin exclusive, which I could deal with, it's specifically an anti-Steam thing. It's coming out on Origin and other digital download platforms... just not steam.

That is <i>just</i> petty enough for me to get in on this petty bandwagon and not buy ME3 out of spite.

I've never bought mass effect games right off the bat. I'm going to wait until it comes out on steam. If it doesn't? Oh well.

BF3 was a HUGE debacle for me. Not going through that again.

Geez, that IS news to me. Damn man. I think someone owes us an explanation. What's so despicable about steam's business practices as opposed to everyone else? Details! Valve, EA, I'm looking at you. One of you has gotta speak up.

I'm going to have to be honest though: This isn't going to keep me from ME3. I need to see it through now. I loved the first two games too much to miss the third. The obvious spinoffs and sequels afterwards though? I'll try to resist. They'll probably decline in quality anyway.

Teh monehs, little else I can think of.

In and of itself it's not a completely unrelatable position, Steam can be stupendously expensive for no good reason (other than to finance another shovel of food for Gabe). But to provide as an answer to that, another service that manages to be ######tier at every conceivable level is baffling. EA is ###### trolling.
  • MonkfishMonkfish Sonic-boom-inducing buttcheeks of terrifying speed&#33; Join Date: 2003-06-03 Member: 16972Members
It's because they want to handle the DLC through origin and not Steam. Gabe was all "but then we can't verify the integrity of the games" (or something to that effect) Which is a little weird because DLC for Bioware games is handled through their own proprietary system where you have to buy their own currency to get the DLC. (And it's all awful)

Wasn't it one of the things they were arguing about when a bunch of EA games disappeared from steam last year?

(EA basically just organised the conditions where they could get their crap removed from steam so they could put it on origin or other DD services. But that sounds a little :tinfoil:)

    So basically...

Valve treated EA in the same way EA has been treating every other developer in the world for the last 10-20 years, and EA got all offended, took their ball, and went home.

Short version? Steam refused to give EA the extensive personal information they are now ripping from your PC and account information to add to their marketing/demographic research database. Did you know that Origin may be monitoring your system usage and web browsing, to help 'tailor ads to your interests'? Steam also had a problem with EA charging direct rather than through Steam Wallet for DLC (ie: Steam wanted their cut of the DLC monies too, EA decided to be their usual greedpig self and decided that the few percent of each sale wasn't worth it).

Still boycotting EA and Origin. Their support of SOPA/PIPA only solidified that, and trying to force Origin further down people's throats with these kinds of business practices is just disgusting.
I'm sure there are plenty of others like you though, lolf, who will vindicate their actions as being 'acceptable', and encourage them to continue.
I can only vote with my own money though. Of which EA is getting NONE for the foreseeable future.

I can't really say I was going to buy ME3 any time near the release. Maybe one day when I could get it for < 10€ or something. Now I'm propably not going to buy it even then, as I don't want to install Origin on my computer.

EA has been ruining games and their development for years now *coughs* C&C *coughs*. Can't say I'm not surprised. However seems that this might be a giant scheme to kill PC game titles one at a time from the EA front just by introducing this POS Spywar they call "Origins".

A downloading platform should not dictate what games you play.

Equally, if you live in the real world and care about EA browsing your history to tailor advertisements you are not going to look at, it should not dictate what games you play.

So, man the ###### up you girls. If you want the game, buy it. If not, then quit whining.

And if you intend on buying the game and still whine about it, stop browsing porn and other things you shouldn't.

The point I'm making is don't cut your nose off to spite your face. Just because it might make you feel insecure and inadequate about what you do on the internet, it still allows you to play the game without completely blocking your access. It's a side show, not a blocker. People need to chill and relax, take the bullcrap with the sweet. We've got away with it in the gaming industry but it's time we got in line, you wait 20 minutes for advertisements before a film at the theatre, so this is the equivalent. It won't go away.
