No cause it makes the lerk able to ambush

But the skulk can also ambush.

right but the lerk could hang from a ceiling instead of having to flap constantly to stay in the air.

Is there anyone out there that would be willing to make this in the form of a mod

That would be awsome, I sure would give that mod a try. I would suggest crouching by a surface you are aiming at clings you to it. Kind of like inverted wallwalking.

Thinking of, the lerk could actually (although clumsy), walk around on the ceiling and walls with this implemation. Just aim at your new closeby spot and quickly release and hold crouch again. To prevent you from abusing this and move at rediculus speeds across the ceiling by clinging and releasing in quick succession, it should have a small limitation, such as not being able to cling more than two times in a 0.4 sec window. If this were added officially, they could add a cool animation were you first cling with your wings as you first attach, to quickly attaching your legs and release your wings.

well if you were going to move across the ceiling you would just uncling and flap over then attach into it again.

It should be relatively simple to port the skulk wall walk code to the lerk to test this idea?

yea but i don't know how to do even that :(

I think it's a cool idea, I don't really care of the gameplay side, just implement it and players will figure out what to do with it :)

I'd like to see the Lurk's viewpoint rotate 180 degrees when he roots (to stop casual mid-combat roosting and give it a unique feel), but other than that it seems spot on to what I'd like.

You mean to rotate head down along the roll axis ?

    <img src="http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/k-12/airplane/Images/roll.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

It tried a few thing like aligning the view on the wall normal, but the problem is that you take control over the mouse of the player, which obviously feels wrong.

Wow this is phenomenal!!!. Thanks for doing this. Is there anyway we could get this download-able in the form of a server side mod?

Roll axis seems like the right one to me.

If you rotate it quickly, the transition should be easy to get through; players can't control their camera roll anyway, so you might be able to just tell it to flip what is displayed as up/down if the code allows for that.

Could you post how you did that? Which parts of the skulk code need to be copied?
  • YuukiYuuki Join Date: 2010-11-20 Member: 75079Members
I'll post the code tonigh yep! It's quite simple.

<!--quoteo(post=1884173:date=Nov 8 2011, 12:42 AM:name=SkymanderX)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (SkymanderX @ Nov 8 2011, 12:42 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=1884173"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Wow this is phenomenal!!!. Hum, I guess you need both client and server side. Because when they do not agree with each other on your position you get horrible wrapping.

I'll try the 180 roll, it's probably gonna be nausea inducing but it can be fun.

The first time around it might be unsettling, but I get the feeling that once people get used to it, it'll feel natural.

Ok, I made a new topic in the mod section, with some explanation if anybody wants to play with it, the mod is attached at the end of the message :

How are you implementing the controls for functionality?
Would love to have a key you hold which will have your lerk will stick onto the first available surface (nearest), enabling the perch mode (no longer need to hold 'perch' key once you find a spot) and breaking the mode can be done with flapping, crouching, and airbrake to glide slowly, and most importantly, silently down from a cloak position behind a group of rines >:)

I tried crouch to stick, it works reasonably well, although it's not the easiest thing to fly and hold crouch at the same time.

Yeah I was thinking of using crouch, put that has it's own problems, i.e. falling down, lol. Maybe left alt, enters you into 'stick mode' (rather then having to hold down the key) hitting it again takes you out of the mode.

maybe bind one key to grasp the surface and stay and one key to hold and on release the lerk lets go as well.

    you think that might work?

I really like the look of this! Combined with camouflage it would add another tactic for the Lerk. Obviously the Lerk would come out of cloak when attacking but I think it should still be able to remain perched while attacking.
