A friend of mine got the files from direct2drive and origin actually recognized it and only installed and patched it as needed.
I bought the game from Amazon, including Karkland DLC and it's currently installing from disc at 6.4MB/s. Don't buy direct from Origin; it's almost twice the price for four times the install speeds. Overall it probably works out about the same wait including waiting for Royal Mail to shove it through your letterbox.

P.S. If you eject the disc to check it is copying from optical media and not just downloading at ludicrously fast download speeds, be sure to disconnect your internet before putting the disc back in, otherwise it gets confused and defaults to downloading at a measly 112KB/s. I can see why you guys are pissed! :P

Hey, wanted to ask around who in the NS2 community has picked up Battlefield 3. Some of you may already know me or recognize me from pubbing on NS2 servers, I just wanted to give a shout out to any NS2 players that have bought BF3 that I am currently inviting different regulars and players on my Teamspeak 3 Server and playing with them on my two 64-man servers. If you guys got BF3 and have been interested in teamplay within the game, go ahead and check us out at: Ts3 IP: gpgaming.ts.nfoservers.com

I was wondering why my jet couldn't do anything but shoot its pea shooter. I didn't realize I had to unlock freaking missiles and flares.
...
...

seriously, how could they take the unlock mechanics from BC2 and make them even *worse*? If they are going to make it RPG-y, the least they could do is make it more like a proper RPG, where if you kill someone 20 levels higher than you, you get a million xp and shoot up 5 levels. That would normalize the playing field a bit faster.

Better still would be to organize the servers so that you're only playing with people in your level range.

What I wouldn't give to be able to play solo versus bots. Good practice without tanking your KDR, and some of the best fun I had in BF2 was picking on bots offline.

if you have time to grind xp with next to no weapons in an FPS game, that's sad for you. My post was also not very whiny at all, compared to a lot of the stuff I've been reading about the game. But I guess I shouldn't let myself get baited by trolls. About 3/4 of my posts in this forum these days get trolled; it's no wonder I rarely bother to even check this forum anymore.

Even if Razor has good intentions, this is still considered pirating and you will probably be slapped silly by some random mod passing by. Hide, hide now while you still can Sops. RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!

I do not believe the executable can be downloaded from that page so I didn't think it would be a problem.

Saw it earlier today but I fear they will merely patch things up so you'll end up banned by using it after some time.
• lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if that happens. Don't expect them to be nice about it and say "stop using it, we start banning for it a week from now" either.

Of course, whether that's a ###### mode or a COMPLETE ###### move depends on how flimsy or solid their justification is.

I wound if the game models a difference between 5.56x45 and 7.62x39 and if so which this gun actually is using.

E.g. are you essentially signing up to playing in an enclosed community that can't interact with everyone else using Origin?

So after origin downloaded the first 40% of the game twice, I went and torrented the ISOs. I filled up origin's download folder with the install files and it jumped right to 90%. It continued to 100%... and beyond. It got to 11.8 of 11.5 GB before I restarted it. It restarted at 91%, went to 100% and installed.

Then it wouldn't launch the game. BF3.exe started in the background and consumed an entire core to itself, but never used above 50MB of memory or appeared in a window. Restarted the computer and now origin claims to be downloading a patch. A 9.4GB patch.

This is a joke. A goddamned joke.

So I installed origin to a non-windows partition but when I downloaded the game instead of putting it in the origin folder as I expected it would it made a new folder on my C drive, does anyone know how I can move the game and set origin to find it?

Try checking the registry for origin keys which have the c drive path and change to desired path.

On a non-Origin related subject, I pirated the game to see if it would run on my system before even considering purchasing and to my surprise it did work... a little too well... having the graphics options to maximum means I can't see ###### because of all the fancy-pants blurring and lens flares and obtrusive bloom. My hype went from 60 to 0 in about 10 seconds.

It looks pretty, but looking pretty should never get in the way of playability. Oh, before you say, yes I do get the flash-light thing, I don't have a problem with that.
• SopsSops Join Date: 2003-07-03 Member: 17894Members, Constellation
If you are referring to the blur when being shot at that is intentionally disruptive. It is meant to make covering fire more meaningful, forcing your opponent to take cover.

You may own the game, but you're introducing elements that the developers have no control over and still expecting it to work which, I'm sorry, is unreasonable.

Do you think I went to those lengths by choice? If their useless abomination of a piece of software worked properly in the first place I wouldn't've had to resort to those measures.

Funny, I have no problem with the lighting. In fact, I think more games need to mimic it. It's literally the first game I've seen where you can actually lose enemies in the sun and fighting with it at your back is a huge advantage. The blurring, as mentioned, is intentional and part of the suppression system which is an excellent feature. The 'lens flares' and 'obtrusive bloom' are there specifically to make the environment more a part of the gameplay.

This isn't god damn Quake. It's a war game. Sorry if you've been spoiled by crappy games for the last x years and think everything should actually look and feel more like a game just because you want to click on bad guys to death and the sun is ruining that for you.

Ultimately there isn't a single thing I would change about the graphical presentation.

Someone on another forum described the graphics in BF3 as "as if an angel has flown down from heaven and shat directly into my eyes".

I'll admit I'm not the biggest fan of the new dust-o-vision that seems to be present in the single-player and some of the dustier outdoor maps, but it sure does look good. For the first time since Crysis I've found myself just stopping and thinking "wow... that looks awesome". This game is chock full of scenery / destruction porn.

On the topic of flying dust/dirt I unlocked the thermal scope for the tank thinking "sweet now I can see enemies through the dust clouds." Nope, it is pretty much useless it just makes everything black and white. Meanwhile the IR scope that you unlock for your primary infantry weapon turns every enemy within 500 yards bright orange and is completely overpowered.

"Oh look a new patch, maybe it will fix some of the problems and balance things up a bit!" (can't coop for more than 10 seconds before it crashes to desktop without any error, promised flashlight nerf, hopeful for IRNV nerf and such)

+ Co-op works now
- Nothing else which I found important was touched
- I get a black screen forever in MP when joining while hearing radiochatter noise in the background. I've fixed that twice before now, once for beta and once for retail. (redownload entire BF3) My ati drivers are new from 2-3 weeks ago, they aren't even the "preview" type anymore!
- My hud and all related elements are gone in co-op but everything else is fine.

There must be something wrong with me for still wanting to play it even after going through all this. My money is on suppressed buyers justification, despite getting it for just 30€ when brand new.

Tank IR makes mines/C4 glow white as the sun. A pretty decent advantage imo.

I wrote that after only using the thermal optics briefly and was disappointed that it couldn't do what I was hoping it would but since then I have used it a lot and will correct myself to say it is very helpful, though still not quite as good as the IRNV.
