I'm loving this game too. My only real complaint is that too much of the game is unlockable -- I guess I'm just thankful you don't start with only a knife.

I've been playing the assault chopper with a buddy of mine and we've been tearing up butholes. It's probably not too fun for the people on the ground but it's great fun for us.

Still tempting, but no.
Maybe if they decided to release it on Steam and you wouldn't have to have Origin running at the same time. A background version of Origin I'm OK with, but the full "Store" experience I will stay clear of.
If nothing has popped up within 6 months or so, I'll probably buy it at some discount, but right now it's just another "Meh...".

Also, officially announcing no mod-tools for a game series most known for it's mods is like shooting yourself in the foot and then peeing on it afterwards.
Can you imagine if Unreal got released without mod tools? Wouldn't be much fun in the long run, which is my prediction for BF3.
Crossing my fingers though, since the earlier series in the franchise have given me countless of hours of joy, frustration and everything any gamer feels when playing something for long enough - and I'd hate to see it end on a bad note with BF3.

This is annoying but at least the unlocks come faster then they did in BF2, after two days I have everything I want for the assault class. Recon was nurfed and support is kind of useless imo so that only leaves me with engineer to work on. Plus all the vehicles but I am much more of an infantry player.

At my 3rd time downloading 12gb of data from origins, not very happy. At least in the beta I only had to do it twice before it started working again :|

Anyone else with infinite looping loading splashscreen?

I've done:
>Googled a lot of people with same problem, no solutions.(mostly posts from the beta though)
>Newest drivers (I hope, the AMD driver wizard won't show preview drivers. Currently using preview 3 one)
>Different browsers
>Repair install of BF3, twice.
>Reinstall origin client
>Uninstall BF3 (Can't, it only shoves me to windows program manager and there it pops a window up for 1 second saying "uninstalling" and then nothing happens)
>Consulted the almighty #naturalselection
>Remove all reg entries manually
>Remove all folders manually
>Redownload BF3 x2
>Restarted computer several times between steps
>Prayed to Panigg

It has also taunted me with "FAILED TO ACTIVATE" on several occasions.

The worst part? I suspect the pirates are merrily playing the SP parts right now and soon about to get private servers to dig into for the MP.

Origin, I hope you flop and die. I don't even care if I wasted 30€ on it.

I used Origin a while back, you can have it save the downloaded install files so you can uninstall and reinstall without having to download everything again. Don't remember if there's an option to verify the integrity of the files you have though.

I did make a repair install TWICE before resorting to downloading everything again. I'm guessing it doesn't check integrity. Adding it to the list of things I tried, forgot to mention it.

In any case, it seems to be working now and I'll probably play it like a korean starcraft pro so my previous rant is pretty moot.

Edit: The campaign is pretty disappointing so far. The QTE are awkward and the shooting isn't too thrilling on waves upon waves of respawning enemies so far. It doesn't help that the mouse sensitivity is messed up for me. If I set the sens low and my DPI high I get MASSIVE negative acceleration (I think it's called that). That is to say when I swipe my mouse over the same area on the mousepad it turns my aim further when I do it slowly and shorter when I do it fast, this is very destructive for my aim. I tried googling a fix but it only referred to BC2 and a cfg file which BF3 does not have anywhere. Setting the sens higher and lowering the dpi makes the effect a lot less noticeable but I can feel something isn't quite right.

No matter, MP is where the real game is and that will come later today \o/ just worried about the mouse sens thingy.

Really happy my single-GPU system can run it on ultra. The night maps in particular are stunning.

Still undecided which maps/player counts I prefer. I love infantry combat but not having armour removes the Battlefield feel.

Only real complaint is the terrible minimap. Really hard to get an at-a-glance overview of how good we're doing and where I should go.
• SopsSops Join Date: 2003-07-03 Member: 17894Members, Constellation
I do like that on the larger maps with armor they still keep the flags relatively close and there is enough cover that infantry combat is still viable, unlike some older BF games.

Oh, it's more than viable. I advise all of my friends never to drive into areas with too many buildings because someone with an RPG could just pop out of anywhere. Heck, they don't even need RPGs; if they're good enough, they'll be able to C4 your vehicle. Oh, and not to mention that even the assault class can hurt your vehicle (the grenade launcher takes only 4 shots to destroy a tank).

IMO, the gas station on Caspian Border and Grand Bazaar are the worst areas for vehicles to traverse. I would definitely keep an extra eye out on these maps.

EDIT: Did you know that the tank can hold a third driver (last unlock in tanks)? The third seat is equipped with extra sensors and the person can jump out to repair while the other two scan the area. Seems this strategy is pretty viable for built-up areas.

Jets are playing their own little mini game as I predicted, surely they get more effective when equiped with unlocks, but they are still similar to flying nascars... U turn, shoot, U turn, shoot...

Planes in a BF game only get involved effectively with ground based combat as slow prop powered madness, but we've done that topic before :P I dunno what to make of this BFBC/BF2 mash up...

oh my lord xD. You guys have to try conquest 64p on operation metro. The midway chokepoint ends up being that transition from the subway into the subway station above exactly so russians will always win holding 2 flags, but its crazy madness fun nonetheless. Make sure you got your smaw/rpg ready and spam those two chokepoints like crazy for lots of explosion fun. Its a total bloodbath..

Totally true! It's a complete frag fest the Russians always win.

Can anyone fly jets without a joystick? Choppers are no problem but I run out of space on my desk when having to continuously turn!

I just change my DPI on the fly (mionix naos 5000 mouse, but surely others have it as well) and get easy turning as needed. Not limited to: Jets, tanks, turrets, choppers, jeeps, other mounted weaponry.

I do get screwed at times when I forget to dial it back when I eject/dismount though.

So you get nothing to use on your plane, and the only way to get something is to use nothing.

So... eight months down the line, BF3 goes on sale, you buy it, you get in a plane and have nothing but a ###### little cannon and people are splatting you with ARMAAMs from across the map...

Good design there DICE.

8 months? I gave it a go today, the moment I'm in the air I get hunted down by missile-spewing packs of enemy jets.

This is sort of the entire problem with just about every game ever to feature an unlock system though.

The crysis 2 demo was the best multiplayer FPS I played in ages, I was awesome at it, then the full game came out and everyone was 50 levels above me and won simply because they had better gear.

Unlock systems are and always have been a completely retarded idea.

They work if they are for games that require specialisation, and the unlock system gives you different options instead of better options. That's hard to balance though. I wonder how many flawed unlock systems are simply failed attempts at this.

Though a game that requires you to play in a certain way to unlock stuff for that playstyle, but gives you nothing for it from the get go isn't even trying if you ask me.
• Nil_IQNil_IQ Join Date: 2003-04-15 Member: 15520Members
Yeah, its pretty bad. I object to having to unlock the defibrilator as a MEDIC, not to mention the horribleness of having to try to kill something with a flare-less, missile-less jet. I finally managed to unlock flares by making like a kamikaze pilot and just ramming them to death. WHERE ARE YOUR FLARES NOW???

I'm calling it now, in BF4 you will start off butt-naked. Your first few hours of play will be spent trying to steal the underpants from enemy corpses so that you can use your hands; otherwise you're "covering your shame" and can't use them. Then you have to sneak up on someone and club them to death with a rock.

Then, and ONLY then are you worthy of the knife.

You'll also have to unlock wheels for land vehicles before you can move. Individually. All four.

If the unlocks don't give you better stuff there's no point in them, otherwise you just have a game with almost no guns most of the time, and most of the ones you do get are useless.

Much better to just make a bunch of guns which are about the same, then you'll at least get some which are useful, and all of them are available at the start.

Well, it can be mitigated if at the start you're competent, and the unlocks provide more niche and slightly better stuff. See CoD and their pre-made loadouts that use weapons you don't have access to at the start. However, stripping you down to nothing as your starting position? Not even countermeasures? That's just plain silly.

I was mostly thinking of games like Guild Wars or Planetside. Guild Wars gives you skills along the way that aren't better in terms of raw power than the ones you've had from the start, but may fit better into the builds you are planning. Planetside's certifications allow you access to different types of equipment, giving you broader options for specialisation. Both games also allow you to play to your strengths while building up your weak areas - an elementalist in Guild Wars who has a strong and varied selection of air magic isn't forced to throw only the basic flare spell around if she wants to pick up some fire magic skills. It's also quite possible to spend all day in Planetside flying a transport vehicle, or setting up cloaked respawn points, or sneaking around in an infiltration suit murdering unwitting enemies, and at the end of the day you spend your earned certification points to unlock the anti-infantry MAX suit that turns you into a force to be reckoned with in any infantry fight.

Now I'm not sure, but can't you download a torrent which contains the core files and let origin patch it up instead? A friend of mine got the files from direct2drive and origin actually recognized it and only installed and patched it as needed.
