<div class="IPBDescription">Commander's field of vision ideas.</div>I wonder if NS2 would benefit from fog of war. Keep it simple and have marine's cone of vision eliminate the fog for the commander.
Buildings reveal a radius of vision.
Power nodes also have a very small radius of vision, letting the commander know, through the fog when it's under attack, but not reveal by what.
I'm not sure how this will affect game play. It might be a bad idea.
Share some ideas.
There's probably already a thread about this. =/

    I would like a fogofwar system, so the commander knows when things should be detectable or not. But he should still be able to drop things into the darkness.

    It would add some priority to the commander's map so it's easier to read the field. Just make sure it isn't pitch black so they can still see the field.

    I think commander should be able to see what's coming and warn his men. This is a huge part of the game(if u r the commander) for me

    Technically, NS2 has an invisible FOW at the moment.

    I agree on dropping buildings into the darkness. Not pitch black but maybe more dimly light from the commander's pov.
    What do you think?

    How much fog of war a unit clears up.

    Marine = blue
    Structures = red
    Green = Macs
    Colors are for illustrating purposes only

    something like this but more tasteful.

    Pretty awesome.

    Only change I'd have would be making the macs have half the vision of a marine. So they aren't spammed for a tactical overview of the map.

    Moving this to I&S

    This should be tied to the powergrid. If an area has power it should be completely revealed at all times. If it has no power the commander should have to rely on his soldiers or scans for vision.

    I think fog of war would make the commander view less visually noisy and better looking. Not strictly realtime "only what your FPS units see" but more like classic Starcraft fog of war, where the whole map is black until you explore it, after which you can still see terrain but not enemy units, unless they are engaged with yours.

    Nailed it.

    Fog of war doesn't have to be foggy. Also, one of the big functions of the observatory is to provide warning to marine teams. The best placement for this is not the center of a room, rather near the entrances. Unfortunately I think this makes beacon buggy, not enough open space to teleport the marines into.

    I think a slight dullness or pallor to the map would go a long way to making the FOW more intuitive to coms. Also, I support coms not being able to build in areas that are fogged.

    As for how power effects fog, that could be tricky... Maybe we could have multiple levels of fog?
