This is my friends site, he's trying to break into the server business...I know, I know, however, I figured I'd help him and we came up with a lil deal here.

Clans that show activity and interest in our high quality servers will be allowed to have a one week testing period, where they can see how they like them, absolutely free, no restrictions. If after the first week, you'd like to continue using the server, you can snag it @ 50% off for the first two months, after that, normal fee's apply. We only ask that you at least advertise where you got your servers from, perhaps in the servers name, or just on your forums.

Seeing as NS2 is still a small community, I thought this would be a good place to do this, for people wanting to setup their own server, and perhaps see how it's going to run, if they get any activity, or anything. There's absolutely no negatives here, you pay nothing if you end up not wanting the server. Of course, we'd hope you would like and want to keep the server.

These are cheap prices, and good hardware really. If this constitutes as spam, I'm sorry, and if it's the wrong section, I couldn't really guess where to put it, and close it if you must, but I figured I'd help out a friend and potential server owners.

Proof of our servers:

Cydweithrediad is potentially interested, but I would like to know what the full price of a 16 man server in NS2 would cost. Am I supposed to determine how much it costs by clicking on one of the other games? Because they all have different prices.

If you can get in touch with more details, that would be awesome!

He's thinking 1.60-1.70$ a slot, considering all the others I found were 2$ and up, I'd say that's pretty nice.(Still seems expensive, though)

@ Half price, that's a friggin steal.

Hello NS2 Community, I am one of the owners of Hive Gaming. I just wanted to reply to this post as we are getting a ton of live support tickets about this deal. Honestly I had no idea this deal was going to take off like it has. Anyway I just wanted to let you guys know we are setting up the NS2 servers now and then going to test them out. I would like to thank all the support and kind words we are getting from the community. I'm also happy to see we can help the community by giving you premium hardware and unrestricted premium dedicated bandwidth at a low cost.

One of the questions we are getting a lot is price per slot and understandably so. Given that system resources for NS2 are a bit on the high end we have set our price as follows.

Public $1.70 a slot - Private $1.15 a slot We feel this is a fair price given system resources and other GSP's coming in @ $1.99 to $2.40 a slot.
Not only are our prices the lowest in the industry. We will also give you a free week to try out the server at no cost to you! Then we will give it to you at 50% off for the next 2 moths if you order this month.

Also please note we are still setting up the NS2 game servers so they are not ready for order as of yet. However they should be ready sometime tonight. As always if you need to ask us anything please do so. We will also post here when NS2 servers are ready to order.

Most important, what are the CPU speeds/processors? The smoothest US servers are basically running high end gamer PCs (i5 2500k/i7 2600k OC'd into the 4.3-4.7GHz range) rather than using conventional server hardware. However, since there isn't much multi-threading/multi-core action happening with NS2 right now, you can effectively run a NS2 server per core (e.g. you can run 4 NS2 servers on an i7 2600k).

You're going to find that those servers will only support 10-12 players maximum in NS2. Unless you are setting up 4.0+ Ghz servers, you will probably not get the performance that you are hoping for.

Your talking about Intel Xeon E5520 Nehalem server CPU's I can assure you it will host 16 people servers with np.
• invTempestinvTempest Join Date: 2003-03-02 Member: 14223Members, Constellation, Squad Five Blue
I still stand by my original estimate of 10-12 - You could very well have 16 players on your server but I can assure you that it will not be playable.

This is the specs of my current servers:

Box #1
Intel Core i5 2500K @ 4.6 Ghz
8 GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600
(1) 500 GB Hitachi 7200 RPM 2.5-Inch HDD
ASUS P8Z68-V Motherboard
Windows Server 2008 RC2

Box #2
Intel Core i7 2600K @ 4.55 Ghz
8 GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600
(1) 500 GB Hitachi 7200 RPM 2.5-Inch HDD
ASUS P8Z68-V Motherboard
Windows Server 2008 RC2

The NS2 servers I have running on these boxes are currently only 16 slot servers. Anything more and they would start dipping in tickrate and people would start complaining.

Not to sound rude or anything, but you are either greatly over estimating the performance of your servers or greatly under estimating how CPU intensive this game is currently.

I can handle 12 slots easily on a Q6600 1U from my closet so I'm sure his can handle 16 easily. Cost is why I have one in my closet and did they stop the free 500 slot license on TS3 servers? I got 3 license's during alpha testing for a total of 1500 slots running on 3 virtual servers, just wondering.

EDIT: How much Storage are you allowing for the file browser in TS3?

I will be interested to hear how low clocked xeons (sub 2.5) can perform in the current build. When I first tried i used a similar processor (L5520, which i think is just a low voltage version), and it was unplayable with even 6 players, moving to a higher clocked desktop component made it playable at about 10 players. This was in mid 150 builds, but the point remains.

I think it is currently impossible to offer reliable performing servers at a cheap cost, since NS2 is probably one of the most demanding dedicated servers out there.

This is what i meant by best of luck for servers in the NS2 community, morbus is correct.
There's only a few servers that can run 16 person servers, inversion, hbz, 156, and the GP D|S/nade's chicago ones which also are on a inversion box.
They run at extremely high specs much higher then standard game server boxes.
Hope it works out tho!

COmpletely stable. @ 15 players, we had 16, but for some reason, my screenshots from MSI, half of them came out black.
• invTempestinvTempest Join Date: 2003-03-02 Member: 14223Members, Constellation, Squad Five Blue
A screenshot of people at the beginning of a game is not a good indicator of whether or not a server is capable of handling that many.

Uh, look at the scores and such.

We played two rounds, I was on the server for about 45 minutes, and nothing went wrong.

According to L3gacy, the server load was 3-5%

Tickrate could still be crap, could be any server, could be other hardware, performance could drop with more servers - since you wont just host 1 ns2 server on a machine with 16threads/cores.

Remove that "proof" screenshot...

Just let ppl test the servers and let them be your proof.
• MkilbrideMkilbride Join Date: 2010-01-07 Member: 69952Members
That's a viable option. I'm not removing the screenshot. You can test them and see for yourself how they perform. Like we said, there is no strings attached to your week free trial, no hidden fee's or anything like that.

Can you post a 16 person screenshot with net_stats on? Also, some heavy action screenshots with the aforementioned net_stats would be useful. The issue is less that regular speed CPUs can't run a 16 person server and more that the server tick rate drops into single digit territory during gameplay.
• L3gacyL3gacy Join Date: 2011-10-08 Member: 126388Members
I setup and ran a 16 player server today. When the server was full the tickrate did jump around from 20 to about 15 but just for a sec. However the game seemed to play just fine but I know people will still complain. So unless there's some tweaks we can do to the server we are going to host 12 slot servers. 12 slots servers run good and hold @ 28 to 30 tickrate .. Hey thats 2 more slots then gameservers.com hehe

If anyone knows of any tweaks please let me know.
We should have the servers ready for order soon. Like Mkilbride said, no strings attached on your free week trial. If you don't like the server just cancel your order. If you would like to test out a free server for a week please send me a PM on here with your clan name and website if you have one. We will set them up as first come first serve basis.
Let me know if you have any questions.
• SmaugSmaug Join Date: 2011-05-23 Member: 100283Members
Hmm. Sad to say, but a 12 man server for a clan isn't all that useful when it comes to official matches, let alone scrims, as we would probably want our games recorded from a 3rd person perspective (given that there's currently no replay system).

I'll have a think about it!
