Plans for HTTP map downloads in-game?

Just wondering if the dev team has given any thought to providing support for downloading maps in-game when you join a server.

Ideally game servers would be able to specify HTTP hosts for the maps like how the source engine handles it :)

Maybe even a central repository for maps? Just a thought. There's a lot of cool maps in the works, would be nice if there was an easy way to jump in and try them out.

UWE has mentioned that its planned, but unknown on when they'll put it in. Not sure how they'll do it, but being able to download maps from a separate server from the one running NS2 would be nice.

Yeah definitely. Like "http redirect" from the old COD games. I reference that because I used to run a CODUO server and it's HTTP autodownload redirect. It was SO much faster, and obviously didn't impact server performance (unless you count having to share bandwidth with the server since they were on the same network.)

ya if ns2 could download from a external http or ftp server's that would be great, also to speed things up we could have the files compressed to lower the download time and have the game decompress it just like Source Engine.

We're planning on including automatic map downloading from a HTTP server.

I know you probably think it's not a priority now but please consider getting it in the game soon if possible, especially once oc is in, it's such a simple feature yet it will help improve variety massively as time goes on without everyone having to bother the the devs all the time, keeping the game feeling fresh and interesting when we go weeks and months without updates, also map makers could more easily test their maps with a larger number of players.
