Unknown Worlds they be stealing your ideas!
That said, just watching that video, I'd call it a tasteless placeholder for their Alpha and nothing more. I wouldn't get up in arms over it, at least.
He's a scam artist, and this guy will do it again.

I remember this as well, was a big fuss about back then on MODDB, i really started disliking them after they went indie, nothing but bad news has been coming from them, mainly about the leader being a complete a-hole that doesnt pay/credit his team.
The T-rex is somewhat understandable imo, its a paintover for a concept, although a cheap way to get your stuff there is only so much different you can make a t-rex look, the armory on the other hand is just a really ###### move imo, basically taking someones concept and making it your own, even if its a place holder i dont think you should just copy something someone else came up with.
dont get me wrong, im a student gamedesign and i know well enough that you need inspiration, you need to base yourself on things, but theres a difference between basing yourself on something and just plain old stealing something.
And IF you do something like this, at least ask if you can, just doing it and hoping no one finds out is retarded
See, there's the rub for me. Even if this team is full of boy scouts with their best intentions at heart, they keep getting caught using other people's designs. You'd think they would learn that the community and developers do not appreciate that method of iteration. Yet here we are again, same team, same accusations.
And I also take back what I said earlier. The model in their game clearly isn't an identical version of the NS2 armory, but it definitely has the same design, and definitely looks like a finished asset to me, given that it has its texture maps and animations. Sure they can always call it place holder and swap it out, but why texture and animate a design that you know you copied and supposedly have no intention of keeping?
All this drama sure does get them a lot of negative attention, and I have a bad feeling it's going to have an impact on their game when it finally releases.

I raided my firefox cache folder and found the footage.
Lucky too, it cuts of the start and almost directly starts with the armory in view

2 seconds in. It's retextured, but is very, very clear that the model is the same. "Placeholder" lol, why take the time to retexture it if it's just a placeholder?

For those curious: http://www.hl2world.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?p=3601830#p3601830
Don't think much of Unknown Worlds and continue to create the wonderful game that you are creating right now. If these people are truly stealing peoples ideas then I think it would be more than rumours and Chinese whispers by now.
So what they are similar. That game has dinosaurs and this game has... erm... mouldy alien thingys. Not much of a similarity.
Sooner or later that guy will get what is coming to him.
Apparantly the Orion artist behind it took inspiration from ns, or that was the explanation given by Orion studios on that youtube video before im guessing UWE got them to remove it :p.
Also, they reuploaded the video with that bit of footage cut out.
Also those staitions are all stolen from the Borgs :-D.
Even TF2 has an armory working at the same style (ok almost).
In modern Armories combined with healthstations you need:
•arms for scaner
•a plate to stand on (wheight)
•a LCD to interact
•better look than todays armorys. F.e.:

•needs atleast show a gun on lcd
•heal and supply
•you have actually to look (and stand on it to get yor DNA scanned to allow acces to TSA Nanotech, or did you ever see a Fade on it buying a gun?)at it to interact
So what would you design? If I need to design a armory I would go a simmilar aproach on it. I do really not think they stole (this time) a model.
Take it as fun.

Ah yes, looks like it, they cut out the armory part and added a disclaimer telling how their stuff has still a lot of placeholders lol
I wonder if i can get my video upload to be added as a video response :p
Its one thing to work with ideas of others, another to take/ripoff physical/digital property...
But since its in alpha and are indie, i dont think uwe will jump on them with lawyers just yet - but having some chitchat with them wouldnt be bad...
You dont take stuff thats not free without asking, no matter what.
Well putting aside the point that i think the implicit aim of the game is to lower the brain cell count of those who play it, i would never support Orion because of the guy who leads it. There is history about how he treats/treated his employees but i wont detail it - http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/g2...ives/?limit=500
In regard to copying, this isnt new for them. They basically cloned halo, stole a t-rex model from another game, then when people kept pointing out how much of a halo clone it was, they redesigned the player models and now they look like crysis. Your right about games copying from other games, but this isnt so much innovation and inspiration as it is approaching blatant plagiarism. Its more the mentality this guy has - using UWE assets (they are so incredibly identical) to promote his own game that he is selling for money.
Even if the model isn't a 1/1 copy of an NS2 model, these guys have a history of uninspired thinking. If "Talent copies and genius steals", that's funny, because the results here are so unimpressive...
The sounds are probably from a sound repository, cause I agree in that I've heard stuff from other games in their trailer, perhaps slightly edited noises like the stolen armory idea?
if the armory was given a new engine and exaust thats what there armory looks like
plus that definantly looks like a halo vehical in there other video just a diffrent color
Then again... He's probably not chuffed. And I wouldn't be either. Blatant and inexcusable theft. Using stolen IP as a placeholder, for private playtesting perhaps? Ok, I can deal with that. Using stolen IP on promotional material for a product you want to make money out of? An insult to all the work UWE has put in over these years.
Well spotted OP.
