not a whine thread
I was reading through a refund thread which turned into a bit of a FPS thread and I saw some FPS advice from syknik http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...t&p=1873045 which I tried out just now and actually did improve my FPS a bit, ty!

Was wondering if people could post their ideas here for improvements on FPS console related in-game or video card, would defiantly help some people including myself =D

Sincerely,

Boxer!

*I couldn't find a thread for it myself, the search doesn't always work for me so if there is one, please direct me ^^*

Myself, vizionz and tempest all worked on getting the best fps while playing ns2. Vizionz stepped it up and wrote a small fps guide in one of his threads, if you find that you'll find all the changes we've made in our nVidia settings, it'll definitely help all those who are using nVidia graphics cards.

Found the post he made: http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index....t&p=1865716

It doesn't have the pictures though, but just follow what he put and it'll be good to go. :)

Covers the various console commands/graphic changes that can possibly have an effect. The ones Syknik mentioned are the primary fps improvements.

Also, if you want them to run automatically everytime you start NS2 (rather than having to type them in console everytime), try McGlaspie's autoexec mod: http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...howtopic=114700

Be aware that you can only have 1 mod running at launch. I was unable to launch other mods/multiple launch settings for NS2.

I would rather manually type these in than lose out on my Alien Vision Mod :)

Pretty sure that's the r_flash command

One of the tips for 185 (that was actually true before but less extreme) is to play on low ping servers. It will really help your fps.

Those commands in Scardybob's thread are pretty helpful, being on the threshold of playable fps myself the ones i found that made the most difference were r_bloom 0 (gained about 5fps) and playing on medium graphics quality instead of ridiculously awful. The latter seems wrong but for some reason it both gives me an extra fps or too which when you're ~20fps is nice, but more importantly it seemed to reduce a lot of the mouse lag and delayed firing i'd had on the awful setting even with these extra commands. So if like me you get sluggish mouse response and a delay when trying to fire, give playing on medium a go.

Fastest way to improve FPS is to update your GFX drivers if you haven't already.

Disclaimer: Yes, I understand this won't help the majority of people, but around 20% of people probably haven't upgraded their drivers in over a year if not more, and this will help.

So how did this 185 update cause a big drop in fps? because i bought the game 185, and im wondering if my fps will improve next updates.

It did so by improving the network prediction. Network prediction is what predicts the movement of you and other players when the server is slow to respond, either because of a slow tickrate or specially because you have a high ping.
The result is, that on high ping servers, the cpu charge is now higher than before. This is partially because now some parts of the code are used more than before, that where not yet optimized.

What does that mean for you? Performance should gradualy get better with every patch, as it did before with every patch. Sometimes a patch can have negative performance changes, but this is rare (like the previous).
What does it also mean? Playing on a high ping, low tickrate server is now much smoother than it was before. I'm actually really impressed on how smooth the game plays even with a tickrate of 10-15 and a ping of 150+. This advantage should stay, and performance should get better again.

It won't improve by 20FPS unless they really focus on performance. You may see 10-15 FPS if your lucky friend. If your getting 10-20FPS now, the next update won't help you very much...
