Commanders play from overhead to lead their team to victory. Build structures anywhere, collect resources and research upgrades. Marines buy weapons at an Armory or build sentry turrets and siege cannons to assault the enemy. Aliens build upgrade chambers, evolve special abilities and plant traps.
What happened to that idea? Anyone know?

Hydra's aren't really traps - a trap should be hidden and then triggered by the enemy. Marines can hear hydras and they're quite visible from far away. A trap should be something a gorge can secrete in the infestation then when a marine walks on it there could be a poison gas bomb or babbler attack....something like that.

Although those would be rather cheap. I would prefer intelligent hydra usage, player ambushes, and webs to be the 'trap' aspect of NS.
Someone had to do it.

ARG, I took the link to the video then I saw you comment... :'(
You'll be able to cloak hydras (maybe also make them be less audible?) with one of the alien chamber.
And, by the way, +1 for the dungeon keeper reference. OH MAN, a DK mod for NS2, that would be AWESOME !

You have an excess of Gorges! There's a word for keepers like you!

Micro Gorgies are stalking your dungeon. BEWARE!

this would be so amazingly useful for ambushes and traps.

That kinda goes against the whole "Never take the control from the player" idea most devs talk about.
And would be freaking boring too. What if you survive the ambush from the aliens... The you're just supposed to stand around until the "mouth" drains your health?
An easily destroyed one :P
I suppose the Web Spit upgrade they talked about earlier counts as a trap...

you could shoot the mouth

step 1:
notice the horrible pain emanating from your left and/or right leg.
step 2:
look down by tilting your neck horizontally, notice the mouth chewing your foot.
step 3:
Aim your weapon at the mouth that is chewing your foot.
step 4:
press the trigger.
step 5:
If you hear a clicking noise reload your weapon.
step 6:
repeat step 3 to 6 as needed.
