Just finished the DNF demo.

It's exactly what I expected. Consoleified, stupid as hell, puerile. There was a Half-Life reference.

Grinning like an idiot most of the way through. I'll buy it when it hits $20 on steam, not before.

Where's the mighty boot. I was mashing Q and nothing happened.

But I drew a big red ###### on the monster.

So did I. You can be <b>certain</b> that gearbox are tracking what people draw on that, and they'll release an averaged composite of what everyone drew. Mark my words.

Pretty similar experience. The only other thing I will wait for is the mod that lets you carry all the guns at once. Screw you laziness on the interface for consoles and '2 guns' limit :/

Oh so THAT'S why Borderlands plus all DLC was cheaper than the GOTY edition. PFF, like I'm paying money for a demo.

    Borderlands: 19,99€
    DLC pack: 23,99€

    Total: 43,98€

    Borderlands GOTY: 49,99€

Six euros for a demo?! Madness!

I didn't buy the gotie, but I still got the code. Must've been because I bought borderlands a fair while ago.

This. If you bought any version of the game (at least through Steam) before a certain date, they let you get the demo key. I sure didn't buy the GOTY too.

It's so adorable when a PC FPS game gives you the option of using an xbox controller. Yes, please, my mouse is just too responsive! This sucks, I can't go get a cup of coffee while waiting for my character to turn around!

Also, is it just me or does Duke sound a bit like Bullwinkle?

    Never.

    Howto:

After the urinal part, type dnweapons, all weapons get dropped in front of you, pick 2.
Type dnclip until "Clipping: off" appears, aim down, press W until you see your feet, then type dnclip until "Clipping: on" appears, you will fall down and Duke will do this half assed "Aaah" yelp.
After you've almost reached the place below, type dnclip until "Clipping: off" appears and fly into the window at the wall.
You're now exploring the duke <strike>mansion</strike> penthouse!

    Also, I broke the game: <img src="http://i.imgur.com/X4IFtl.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Well let's list up the things which have no place in a Duke game then :)

<ul><li>Regenerated Health as in hiding like a coward to regain health... NOT DUKE AT ALL, Medkits needed here!</li><li>Sniper rifle... Why?</li><li>Iron sights/Aim down sights. Duke doesn't need that, his manliness will guide the bullets!</li><li>Serious lack of the Mighty Boot (it's Duke's signature "weapon" FFS) Instead you get the pansy a$$ rifle butt to the face...</li><li>A maximum of 2 main weapons... Duke should be able to carry a bazillion of weapons if not more. And don't give me that console game interface nonsense...</li></ul>

Gearbox was probably too much of a wuss, to remove all additions. All newer hero's (nowadays gamers) will throw a tantrum when they're not present in a game... Duke doesn't need any of it man, none of them at all!

    <b>The Good</b>
<ul><li>It's Duke, right?</li><li>Reasonable variety of weapons that all handle pretty well, including some of the ol' favourties. Could probably have a lot of fun with these in multiplayer.</li><li>Suitably over-the-top sound effects (what did they do to the Ripper, though?).</li><li>The humour's still there, although sometimes misses the mark.</li></ul>
    <b>The Bad</b>
<ul><li>It's not quite Duke. The way the lines are delivered are like someone's trying too hard to be Duke.</li><li>Riding along a minecart and <i>not</i> being able to shoot at enemies or do anything interactive?</li><li>Really simple AI routines without the sheer numbers of enemies in games like Serious Sam to justify such simplicity. This is one thing that hasn't changed since 1996 and it really shows. Enemies don't take cover or try to flank you; they just rush you head on firing their guns in frenzy.</li><li>Very linear level design, without the spit-'n'-shine scripting polish that other games (CoD, Half Life 2) have in abundance. The level design in Duke was never that linear; there were always multiple routes, making the levels more replayable and somehow more authentic. The demo felt like a long corridor, with the exception of the stadium fight.</li></ul>
    <b>The Ugly</b>
<ul><li>Extradiegetic music. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrbIchTTbcM&feature=BFa&list=PLAC99A44BE97E6ECD&index=1" target="_blank">The</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inXHgqowWZk&feature=BFa&list=PLAC99A44BE97E6ECD&index=2" target="_blank">score</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_FOW23_ePI&feature=BFa&list=PLAC99A44BE97E6ECD&index=5" target="_blank">in Duke</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fl_1ioJBb1U&feature=BFa&list=PLAC99A44BE97E6ECD&index=15" target="_blank">was</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ach04hbHu2E&feature=BFa&list=PLAC99A44BE97E6ECD&index=16" target="_blank">one</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNKBWQcYP8E&feature=BFa&list=PLAC99A44BE97E6ECD&index=21" target="_blank">of</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_0GQEHeyGM&feature=BFa&list=PLAC99A44BE97E6ECD&index=32" target="_blank">the</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-gLv8vZf0o&feature=BFa&list=PLAC99A44BE97E6ECD&index=34" target="_blank">best</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV5Y4qiszK4&feature=BFa&list=PLAC99A44BE97E6ECD&index=42" target="_blank">bits</a> and the music during the demo, particularly the 2nd level, just don't live up to the original.</li><li>Some of the textures were a bit low res and the film grain effect had some unintended behaviour (e.g. with the water in the stadium level). That's with ultra settings, FSAA; GTX 460.</li><li>Use this! Use that! I'd like to have an option to turn off on-screen prompts. I really don't want to be told how to open a door every time I see one. And I don't want to be told to kick a field goal with the eyeball of the behemoth I just downed and watch a cutscene of me doing it when I press the 'use' key, I want to do that myself, with the foot that I can't use.</li></ul>
    <b>The Huh?</b>
<ul><li>That weird 'homage' animatic.</li><li>Sprinting. Sprinting has been introduced to games that want to be a bit more real. The thing is I'm not sure if Duke is trying to be that kind of game. It's a bit conflicted.</li><li>Iron sight. Same thing as sprinting. It's a 'realism' thing that I'm not sure fits in Duke, and it makes me wonder what kind of game Duke's trying to be.</li><li>'Hide & heal'. Same as above. Health regen is a 'new' mechanic that doesn't fit in with the deathmatch heritage of Duke (the type of play where you need to fight over health pickups to survive). I can't totally dismiss it until I see how the multiplayer works out, which I'm looking forward to.</li><li>"Press the spacebar to continue.", "UO6" as an on-screen prompt for Mouse Button 6?</li><li>Driving sections. Didn't really do it for me. I'm hoping it's a bit more refined in the full game.</li></ul>

Overall I'm slightly underwhelmed and I had reasonably low expectations to begin with. I'd imagine if the single player is like the demo it's not going to be very fun, but the multiplayer probably has quite a bit of potential. I understand that demos are often incubated early on in a game's dev cycle and that I'm being fairly harsh on it by treating it as 100% representative of the game. The game could be much improved; I'll have more to say when my special ed pre-order gets unlocked (yes - big Duke fan here). I'm still very much looking forward to playing it.

This is exactly how I felt it with the trailers. To some extend I understand they need to introduce the character to the new gaming generation, but the whole thing felt like Duke is trying way too hard. I was hoping that the trailers were just overblown, but looks like it isn't getting much better in the demo then.

you have an ego bar which is basically a health bar... It doesn't fill up by doing manly things like shooting or dashing towards enemies under heavy fire, instead it fill up by hiding like a coward...
