What were they thinking?

<div class="IPBDescription">Why NS2 seems like fail to me...</div>Ok, why did UWE chose to create their own engine if they are still going to use Steam? That makes little sense as to me, the purpose of getting away from Source would be to not allow Valve to cut in on the profits, which in terms of using Steam, gives Valve trolls another way in... Also, the first NS was released in 2001 and it was in the early stages or alpha or beta and it seems to be a lot more stable than the crap stage NS2 appears to be in. Is that because you guys didn't make your own engine? You do realize making an engine is hard and making a game for an engine already made is more easy?
And why didn't you sell out to Valve? Did you think you could make more profits without Valve or did you seem to want to take the high road and be independent and say oh wow you made it on your own but still piggybacked off of Valve's Steam?
It seems to me after about 10 years, NS1 is still better than NS2 and NS2 if it ever gets polished enough for a real game that can support 32 players or more, then won't the game be outdated? Take Starhawk... Or even Empires mod for HL2. Can NS2 really beat those games with the weird mechanics of whatever engine you created?
I saw the video. It seems Marines are like ninjas which are very agile or was it the lag? I don't think this game is a success at the current stage. You might want to see if you can sell out to a bigger company if they will take you because as time files by, your game concept and previously created stuff gets more and more outdated.
Be angry, but that is how I feel. You aren't getting a fan-boy take. I was a fan of NS1. Believe me I was. I don't play it anymore, though. MAG is what I play now on the PS3.

They made their own engine because max already had quite a bit of one built, and source wasn't cutting it.
NS2 doesn't need to support 32 players or more, 24-32 is generally quite big for an NS game. That's probably what's being aimed for.
NS1 is better than NS2 because it's done, that's like saying the original doom is better than the half life 2 beta, the respose is 'well duh'.
I kind of doubt UWE ever wanted to not use steam, steam is an absolute boon to an independant studio, it allows them to almost self publish, and has a bunch of helpful features to boot.
Yes, but I think the critical point you may be missing here is that NS2 is not MAG.
If you put 256 people into an NS game it would be a very silly game. NS is designed for between 24 and 32 players. Actually it's designed for 16 I think but you can go up to 24-32 without it getting too silly, especially with the unified resource model in NS2.
The game engine doesn't need to be technically capable of supporting large playercounts because the game does not mechanically support large player counts, it ceases to be fun if you put too many players in the server.
Now that you've said your piece, I'm going to lock this before things get ugly.
