Whooohooo!
Well I've been asking for it for a while amd my wonderful girlfriend decided to get it for me for my birthday. I am getting a new graphics card. Specifically,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130590

And to support it,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817139010

I am only making this post as the packages should arrive tomorrow and once I have installed them the first thing I am going to do is run NS2 on max settings and see what kind of performance increase that beast of a card will do.

Currently I am running:

Pentium E5300 dual core 2.6ghz/2.6ghz
6gb Ram
Nvidia 8800 GTS 512mb

on Medium quality and I average anywhere between 20-45 FPS.

I'll post what happens sometime tomorrow or Friday. I have to work tomorrow so the installation might have to come early Friday morning.

######, I need a girl that is willing to buy a GTX580 for a birthday!

Is there anywhere in particular they are known to frequent?!

Should be sick. I have a GTX285 (roughly a GTX460, so somewhat less than a GTX560), and I find I have no trouble keeping playable framerates, so you should have a hell of a good time!

Well, I doubt you'll have a huge performance increase, that E5300 will seriously limit the gtx580.

You should try to get an old Q6600/Q9xxx, otherwise your new gfx card will be kinda bored without a good CPU ;)
  • OPIEOPIE Join Date: 2002-11-12 Member: 8343Members
I did some research on that and it will depend on how CPU dependent the game will be. I plan on upgrading the motherboard and processor next. But it will certainly be better then the 8800GTS 512.

If the game is GPU dependent I should be able to run the game at max settings with out the slightest of problems. However if it's something like Battlefield which is CPU dependent then yeah the E5300 wouldn't allow the GTX 580 to be all it can be. But still would be better then the 8800GTS.

The GTX 580 should cover me for the next 5 years of gaming without having to upgrade it again. So within the next 6-8 months I plan on upgrading the Mother board and CPU.

You'll definitely see a performance increase, but don't expect miracles. I have a HD6950 and it generally ranges between 30-70fps. Also, I don't think the current quality setting make much difference for high performance systems. I only see a roughly 5fps difference between high and ridiculously awful settings. I suspect its because my performance is CPU-limited, rather than GPU-limited at the moment.
  • OPIEOPIE Join Date: 2002-11-12 Member: 8343Members
Yeah I am not really expecting much of a performance increase with NS2 right now concerning the difference between Medium and Max Settings. However I am expecting Max setting to be playable now for me. Currently it will lag to much when there is a lot of action.

I am however expecting to be able to put games like Bullet Storm up to max or close to max given the E5300 will "bottle neck" the GPU. Right now Bullet Storm looks amazing and I have some settings on low. I am really excited to see what this card will do for me...even more excited for the future when I plan on upgrading to an I7 once this recall issue has been worked out.

Well I was always an AMD fan until I just didn't have the time and money to build a computer from scratch like I use to. I also fell behind in the tech loop with all the new stuff coming out. However this HP I have with the pentium actually impressed me. From my research I understand that Nvidia and Pentium are currently beating ATI and AMD (which are the same company now.) Nvidia and ATI always went for each others throats and for a while ATI was the leader with graphics cards. However Nvidia has seemed to learn from their mistakes and has taken the lead. As far as AMD and Pentium are concerned they are kind of tied right now. Pentium seems a bit in the lead but we will have to see what the new AMD Fusions do.

You have a girlfriend willing to spend 620$+ on a overpriced video card and branded PSU for an HP POS?

Forget that video card, and use the $600 she is going to spend on a new system.

Cool gear but you wont get the best of it until you get a better processor. In many new games (except GPU intensive games like Metro 2033) a e5300 will hold back a newer graphics card - I would overclock my C2D further than 3,2ghz to get more smooth gameplay with my radeon 5850, but Im not comfortable with it.

I wouldn't go with anything less than a Q9xxx if you upgrade, and much rather an intel 2500k. NS1 is single-threaded at the moment if I recall, and a Sandy Bridge cpu will be faster at single-threads than anything AMD (including the Bulldozer line about to be announced, it will be awesome for multithreading with the new architecture, but still not as fast at single processes)

I am well aware that for certain games the performance will be hindered. However it will still be better then the 8800 GTS 512. As I said above I am planning on upgrading the mother board and processor. Basically when I am done this PC will not be a HP computer anymore. I only bought it originally because it was the only thing I could finance at the time. I didn't have the option of buying all the new parts seperate.

And I am aware that I will probably only have a slight FPS increase NS2 wise. Trust me I've done my research I know what I am doing. Once I end up getting the Mother Board and Processor I want the card will be well worth the money spent. I won't have to upgrade again for a very long time.

Sort of. As I understand it, pretty much all of the current performance issues are server-side and are CPU-limited. Eventually, they will fix that and client hardware will mostly determine performance, but I'm not totally sure it will be CPU-limited. For example, my HD6950 will get up to 200fps (without vsyncing) on L4D2, which is close to the system specs requirements UWE is shooting for. I currently max out at about 80fps in NS2, so UWE still has a ways to go to optimize client-side performance.

HP POS? HP is just who bought the first parts, if he them... it will no longer be "HP POS".

Rest of it, Good advice, if that was what he was looking for. He is going the route of... current, top of the line video card, then a little later - a new processor. So he has a system in mind, and spending the $600 on that right now would not put him where he wants to be. Buying all of that could cause him to have to upgrade sooner than he desires. More money now, but all at once, instead of less, but in short intervals.
Thanks for sharing your ability to add parts and count to 600.
His goal was to share his good news... and I would love to be getting that card right now haha...My gtx 260 is getting old....
Performance will be gained, a much more after a CPU upgrade, of course.

You must of had bad luck or a streak of it with defective name brand PSU's. If ANYTHING the PSU is the most important Unit in the entire build of the PC. A bad PSU can fry your entire system forcing you to buy a whole new system. Corsair has never let me down. I've been buying their Power Supplies since I began building computers. I've NEVER had one blow out on me. I had only ONE shipped broken. It was a cheap $50 unit and it didn't even power up. So anything could of happened there. Could of got bumped around bad during shipping and knocked something loose. And the Corsair PSU's come with warranties. So if it does happen to ###### the bed and fries my entire PC. Corsair would be responsible to replace every single piece of hardware I had as long as the warranty had not expired or I didn't do anything to cause the blow out.

    2. nothing wrong with that psu, it's among those with most value! and it's 80+ silver, and has 7y warranty.

    3. your motherboard and cpu need to have the same socket. and you'll probably need ddr3 RAM also.

    1a. i have a c2d e6850 3GHz @ 3.6 with a gtx480, and in many games the cpu is a bottleneck (gpu working to 80%).
i can imagine your pentium e5300 is about HALF of my cpu currently, and you're getting an even MORE powerful gpu for it...
1b. why buy the 580 a week before 590 arrives? it will most likely make the prices go down...

You should get the newer I5 2500k as it is faster at factory speeds and overclocked, and because it's 50 bucks cheaper. The only thing the I7 offers is hyperthreading, which isn't used for games.
If your IT friend didn't recommend you that one, it is probably because there has been a shortage of motherboards for them recently (problems with dying SATA connectors, Intel's fault), but if you wait a few months the market will be normal as they just started putting the new fixed mobos on the market.

I've noticed the lighting system deteriates with the newer a card. My 4870 showed them sharply, my 5770 blurred them slightly and I have a 6870 today which blurs them quite a bit and flickers them.

I dare not try an i7 or some such.
