Rotating Props ?

Holo-3DTHolo-3DT Join Date: 2011-02-01 Member: 79837Members
I have a simple question guys,

if i want to create a prop (or 2) that slowly rotate for infinity... do i have to do this in the cinematic editor ?
or can it be done in Spark Alone ?

The reason i ask is because it seems the cinematic editor is mainly there for emiters and sprites since
i cant figure out how the hell to get a regular model or prop for that matter opened in there.

you can get props into your cinematics. there was a spinning strobe beacon tutorial floating around here somewhere.

Thanks Tig, il try n look for it.

Ive been looking for documentation on the cinematic editor but have been coming up empty so far, do you have any helpfull links ? such as how to put a cinematic into a map once its done ? or maybe you could just point me in the right direction :)

that one i can answer. you just place a cinematic entity in the editor and change it's cinematic file to whatever you want.

if you open a cinematic file in the cinematic editor you'll get a feel for how they're constructed. usually they aren't attached to a prop and just have an emitter that emits particles that have all the expected attributes like particle life span, velocity, size, color, etc. you can even have multiple emitters in one cinematic, but you should always try to achieve your effect with a minimal amount of emitters (to keep the framerate up during gameplay).

as for props, i honestly thought it was as easy as dropping one into the cinematic editor with the emitter. then in the map editor you just place the cinematic and you'll see the prop too.

i did a cinematic of a turntable with a fade on it rotating and it works like a charm but, it has no collision geometry. I would like to now how they did the fan rotations as they have collision.

So my question is not about cinematic animations but more of how to make a standard prop into a dynamic prop with different levels of rotation.

    Anyone care to share ideas?

I think SN.wolf is asking how they intergrated the animation to the fan model. Not how they put a rotating fan in a NS2 map.

Maybe it is part of the prop_dynamic properties? has anyone tried to put any model with an animation (you know slow, med, fast) and see if it rotates on its axis?

    hey guys,

Thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated.

Kouji_san thanks for the link, i didnt realize there was a tutorial map out there, however when i try to open it in spark its missing just about all entities and props as well as alot of the geometry, which i found also happens when i open other official maps as well (i checked all the layers and groups as well) but it may be a problem on my side for all i know : /
i can however run the map in game, however there are no textures applied (which may be normal) and if i spend more than 2 min in there it starts to lag so bad i cant move more than 2 steps without being thrown back. im using a brand new Asus gaming laptop so im sure its not a memory problem.

    To iterate more clearly on what im trying to achieve, so you guys can have a better idea ;

I have 2 seperate pieces ( Upper and Lower ) of a generator core "of sorts" that is made up of 9 props for the upper half and 9 on the lower. im trying to figure out how to get the upper and lower part spinning (slowly) opposite direction of each other so far im stumped, and am not sure if this would even be possible to do with the tools given.
the only other option that i can think of would be to completely re-model my own 2 pieces and somehow get those into spark as 2 seperate props, but i dont really want to have to go to that extent since im positive im gonna end up with texture issues.

Hope this clears thing up a bit.
and i apologize if ive confused anyone further lol.

the sample map is just that, it only has developer textures. What you're experiencing in terms of not fully loading the map into the editor is quite similar to what I see when loading ns2_tram. What kind of memory amount does your video card have?

The ingame issue of it you not being able to move around after about two minutes seems most likely a problem on your end. We've tested the map on a dedicated server and it seems to run fine. Mind you this was build 161, haven't really tested it out on build 162...

Anyway, can you run for example ns2_rockdown for a longer period without serious slowdown after two minutes?

There is a tutorial to get rotating lights on the wiki somewhere, which should give you all the stuff you need (rotating props instead :P). Can't seem to find it and as Tig said it should also have a thread in this here mapping forum...

    Thanks for Replying Kouji,

Im using an nVIDIA Geforce GTS 360M ; 1 G of Vram
i have 4 Gigs of Ram as well

i noticed an error when loading some maps, may be the cause of my lag, something to do with failed texture loading ? however once the map does load i see no texture issues at all.

Il be sure to look for that tutorial as well, thanks again, and i do appreciate the help, im just trying to play "catch up" with spark as quick as i can so i apologize for the questions that im sure youve heard too many times :p

    as for running the maps..

Tram Runs Flawlessly, Rockdown is glitchy all around but im able to move around at least, Framerate is roughly 6 "ouch" Junction runs well also. no problems there.

That editor problem sounds like you're running out of video memory. What does it say in the Output window when you load up one of these maps?
