What do you talk into?
I tried searching for a previous mic thread but didn't get any results so...

Does anyone have a particularly good microphone? The standard one that came with my computer was lost years ago (I have one of those constantly upgraded franken-puters that was originally purchased around 1996). Since many people on NS sound like they are actually chewing on their mic instead of talking into it, I thought I'd ask for some opinions before I went out and got a new one. Any brand that is good/bad for ns? Are those ones that clip on to your head (like the xbox live mics) any good?

I've got one of them incredilbly cheap long plastic stick ones, I duct taped it to the side of my monitor works wonders.

Ideally I'd like a headset without headphones, a friend has one but I can't find anywhere that sells em.

get a headphone mic, its not only a great mic but the sound is so much better because you can easily make out which direction the sound is coming from, making finding skulks or marines super easy (but sometimes idiots dont realize this and will call you a wallhacker or whatever)

I use the headset/mic that came with Gamevoice. Works quite well. Of course I never use Gamevoice itself and the only portion of the hardware that gets any use is the cutout between the headset and my external speakers.

From personal experience, i'ds have to say my Labtec Axis-501 works wonders. True, the speaker, condenser cover, and the head support broke off, but it works extremely well as a "collar", around the neck with the boom up by the mouth.

I have the mic that comes with the original Soundblaster Live! From what my friends tell me, I have the best sounding mic out of all of them.

I've got a Labtec headphone/mic set, and it's awesome. Sounds clear even when routed through another machine and back to me.

I have an "Optimus" headset ... (Methinks it's just a generic RadioShack brand or something)

The mic probably sucks, but the headphones are quite nice.

One review I read put Plantronics Audio .90 at the top of headsets for under $50. It costs around $30. I have the Plantronics Audio .80 which seems to be a foldable version of the Audio .90. I love it.

Since I double posted, I suppose I should put some helpful information here.

Please keep in mind that it was for sterio HEADSETS. It didn't include single microphones or monaural headsets. Personally, I think gaming in NS is better with a headset than with a speaker system.

The truth is, the degree to which your understood has way more to do with your available bandwidth than your mic.

I just realized my headphones w/ mic also is a Labtec. But mine are real cheap ones. Got 'em for $5 at MPCON XI (giant 150 person LAN held at the University of Michigan - Dearborn). They seem to work pretty good. I just need to remember to actually use the darn voice chat more .

Then the important thing is to get one that fits your needs design-wise. (ie. stereo headset, desk mic, head mic; also considering things like foldability if you go to LANs alot, and how the headset rests on your head either above or behind the ears.) And of course, price.

That's the ONLY headset you'll EVER need.

I bought one of those recently and I have never been disappointed. The only time when the voice doesn't work well is when the server is very laggy. Other than that, your voice sounds crystal clear.

I use the long stick mic.

I have two actually, one came with an SBLive card and the other I bought seperately. Strangely, the one from the SBLive seems to be clearer when playing games, but the other one is clearer when recording in Windows (using the built-in basic recorder program).

In any case, my mics are just sitting on top of my monitors (didn't use any adhesives, and so far they havn't fallen off), so I can just yell at my screen ;-)

And while I do use headphones, I havn't purchased a headphone/mic combo simply because I'm worried about the quality of the darn things. Actually, I do have one of these, made by Labtec, and not only do they sound bad, they maul my ears. My current headphones on the other hand are really comfortable and sound great, and they should for the $$ I payed. Sennheiser HD 490.

Im not sure which one to get the 80 or 90 does .90 mic fold up, I want a headset where I could just lay it on the desk and don't have to worry about it being to big or something.
