Game not starting?

Hello everyone,

I purchased the NS2 beta 2 days ago and it will not launch in steam. All of my other steam games work except for this one. It displays the "preparing to launch" screen and then nothing happens. The screen goes away and the game never starts. I've tried redownloading the game content to no avail. Any suggestions? Anyone else having this problem?

    Hi, welcome to the forums!

In order to help we kind of need more information tbh.

Can you post your dxdiag and system specs?

I figured out how to get it started. I didn't have all the C++ drivers installed. I needed the 2005's and the 2008's to get it going. Now the problem is that it seems incredibly laggy... even if I am hosting my own server. Other games that require much more computing power run fine on my setup. Any reason why NS2 seems to be lagging like this?

Try lowering your resolution. I helped me a lot.

    there are many reasons.

First, this is a beta that has not been optimized at all right now. While it gets faster with each release (ok, not each, but most), as far as we know they did not adress the main performance issues.

Currently the game runs mainly on one core and does not use the GPU very much. That means that what counts is the raw processing power of one core, 2Ghz is not that fast. As i said, that will improve, just stating how it is currently.

Also, 128 Mb GPU memory is very low. What helps here is the awful detail setting, and lowering your resolution.

I see. That would make a lot of sense for why it is so laggy. I can run Half life 2 and America's Army with ease. Those games require way more than NS2 should.

Just as a side note. At the moment if i run in windowed mode i get a small amount of performance increase but not sure if this is the case with everyone but may be worth a try.

Besides that , Half Life 2 was developed on an engine the team spent about 7 years developing with the profits made from the top selling Half Life 1 game, AA uses Unreal (2 ?) engines.
Spark is still in development , and by a team funded independantly and partially by pre-order sales ... you smply cant compare NS2 in its current state with already launched titles that use stable and / or pre developed engines.

Compare NS2 with those other titles when UWE announces its official release of the title, its current status is : IN DEVELOPMENT.

To give you some perspective , I get on HIGH settings , on a GTX260 AthlonII x4 630 ( at 3.4 ghz) 9 - 12 FPS in Alien start and about 30 FPS elsewhere.
... oh and yes I maintain my PC properly, keeps drivers updated and run it lean as I can process wise.

Yes indeed they are, NS2 is going to require a heck of a lot more horsepower than those two ancient games. Really feel they need to change the specs on the Buy page, its an unrealistic goal. C2duo, 2gb ram, 512mb geforce 9600gt/gts240 should be around the min specs, even with optimisation your playing experience on said system will be pretty average.
