Pistol - needs to be reworked

Tis beta, I know, but the current pistol sound...well, it's horrible. No punch. I just booted up NS1 earlier and love the pistol, it sounds powerful, like a high caliber pistol should be.

Also, the model for the pistol is actually good, but you only see the top of it, which isn't that cool looking. Also the ammo counter on the Assault Rifle makes sense, but on a pistol? I know it's the future and all.

I hope they allow custom model replacement clienside like HL and Source games do. I know the Engine is highly moddable, but I mean like how in CS:S you could replace all the default gun models & sounds, skins, ect, and still play on servers with people who didn't. So you could customize the game.

What I'd like to see is the original weapons from NS1 remade by in NS2, with the advanced graphical effects. Like a "Classic pack" for it, you know? The original pistol + Sound from NS1 is miles ahead NS2's right now.

I just really do not like it, it feels weak by comparison to the old pistol, mainly cause the sound, and I just don't like the Ammo counter.

Looks cool promotional shots, and renders, but not in game for some reason. Also, the firing mode should be different, it says one is slow, more accurate, the other faster, less accurate, but I don't see it in game yet, probably not implemented yet.

I agree the pistol is very unsexy looking atm, but I guess most people like it? I'm all for client side model and sound replacement if that isn't planned already. Except for replacing important sounds such as footsteps and random alien noises to hear them better. That's downright cheating.

For the most part I like the NS1 sounds more, but I'm unable to determine if it's because they were better somehow or it's just that I'm so used to them.

Our pistol just needs a more interesting alt fire... although I'm not the biggest fan of the luger toggle action.

Wolf.. don't you dare insult judge dread! :P!!!.... I feel like A good amount of the sounds in the game are pretty lack luster and have no OOMPH or a crisp sound. But sound is money but i can get past the sound game is good.

To me, sound is very important to enjoying a game. If the sound is poor, I have trouble getting into the game.

for christ sakes the gun is classified as HEAVY, deals bonus to armor.

what kind of power shoots and sounds like a 9 mm pistol.

PLEASE better sound so it is known more dangerous to aliens and awesome for marines.

Luger action is still the thing that is going to bother a lot of people. I mean the Luger itself, although a high quality piece of kit, was indeed susceptible to jamming in areas with grit, dirt, "bacteria" or by simply dropping it. I mean it was replaced by the Walter for this very reason, alongside manufacturing difficulties which isn't a problem for the TSA or Alterra with nanite construction systems. I find it weird the reload action is on the outside, even if it does look cool...

For one, the Luger action is too slow, you shouldn't be able to see it (nitpicking?) and I agree it needs a heavier or maybe even a more metally sound...

Primary: Pistol, high ROF, low damage, high accuracy
Alt: Melee, low ROF, high damage, alien knockback effect

Having two types of fire (especially where you toggle between the effects with the alt fire button) is needlessly complicated. Also, I find that a melee alt fire for the basic weapons is way more useful than any special fire mode. I'm also like the high ROF/low damage type of pistol (pretty much a FPS standard sidearm) than any fancy high powered or special effect pistol, though, UWE could probably make some sort of cool Judge Dredd weapon. However, I'd prefer they'd focus their time and effort on making the primary weapons (assault rifle, gl, ft, jp, exo, hmg) better.

The Pistol should be like the magnum in counter strike. Limited shots, very accurate and highly powered. Then it would have its place and a unique role.

Why would you have a side weapon that did the same as the LMG?

At the moment the pistol is brilliant (apart from the sound) as it is great for sniping rafter Lerks that it is impossible (I know there is a lmg bug fix for next update) to hit otherwise.

I like the idea that at close to medium range you have a reliable lmg, and a pistol that rewards those with good accuracy or more specific tasks. The shotgun is a brilliant close range weapon, especially against fades (and I expect onos). If you don't have a weapon that can do this kind of sniping, what will you use?

Currently you know what weapons to use for particular tasks, that is a good thing.

Pistol is already fine. You need to use ALT mode. There should be something visible on the pistol (and no on the side, it has to be on the back where ammo is) to signal pistol mode. It can be a normal HUD text like ammo counter in CS:S too but it won't fit the ammo counter on the model. It should have 2 functions:
    - new person playing NS2 should know there are 2 modes
    - that person should know that 1 is rapid and inaccurate and second is slower but accurate

Maybe different particle tracer for different pistol modes?

Pretty sure it's going to be a laser sight once they figure out transparency effects.

Instead of giving different accuracy, damage, and rate of fire to an alt firing mode for no real reason, why not make alt fire a 2 shot burst? You get the benefit of firing more rounds, doing more damage, and you can actually justify a slightly slower RoF or inaccuracy. It's good if you want a certain level of believability; you no longer have to explain away bullets that can magically do more damage when pushing a button. On top of all of that, it gives the pistol a little more depth IMO because you have two firing modes that are noticeably different.

It's already been posted, but I think it's worth mentioning again, and that's that the pistol needs a firing mode indicator either on the gun itself (a light or an icon near the ammo counter) or on the hud.No one should have to fire off 2-3 rounds just to find out what they are using.
