The (0 CRC) means that the server files did not include any errors. CRC stands for Cyclic Redundancy Check, and is used for detecting errors in files usually after file transfers.
In short the <b>overall</b> theory is this: Its a mathematical process where a bit sum is calculated from the contents of the file. This sum is saved and then compared to another bit sum calculated from the same file at another time. If the sums are equal it is <b>assumed</b> that the file have not changed since the original calculation of the bit sum. In reality this sum is calculated on small blocks of data and the sum then appended to the same block of data. The receiving end then makes the same calculation and compares with the sum that came with the data.
In order for the sum not to be as large and descriptive as the actual data (then you could send the data twice and compare =]), the mathematical function constructed such that the sum is small in size even for large amounts of data. This has a side effect in that that more than one set of data can result in the same bit sum. To get around this specific mathematical functions are used and the calculations are also iterated a number of times (hence the name cyclic). There is however always a chance that an error will go undetected.
There are many ways to do all this. CRC is one of these ways (there are even different CRC:s). I will not get into it here but you can read more about it here: <a href='http://www.rad.com/networks/1994/err_con/crc.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.rad.com/networks/1994/err_con/crc.htm</a>

Heh, no... if you disconnect and reconnect, you'll see the server count go up only if the map's changed... which usually happens if a server's been empty a while and someone connects.

I am absolutly positive that its how many maps the server has been on, Try it and see for yourself. HLDS doesnt log how many connects there has been.
well, hlds does keep a connection count... its just not displayed when you're connecting to the server.
type status in console and you'll see several #s next to each player... one of them is their connection ID which is a sequential number that counts up from one when the server is restarted.
I'm looking at my cs server now with hlsw and there've been 16,000 connects since it was last restarted, 603 maps ago.

So when the server crashes, restarts that will go back down to 1, for every map change it increases by one.
