Only for Graphics/Physics; nothing network-related plz
I hope it's ok to start it here. If I forgot something, just add it in your posts.
The idea is to see how the performance is in general for other players than yourself and to give some tips, if you guys have some.

Plz try to keep the order I'm starting with.

OS: Win7 64
CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 @2,8 ghz
GPU: Ati mobility Radeon 5650 DDR3 1024
RAM: 4 ghz

NS2 Build: Beta 156

Game Settings: No matter which, Frames never keep over 30. (min. tested resolution 1024x768 ; all details levels tested)

Average FPS: About 24 (from 15 to 50).

Windowed Mode FPS: About 19.

Specific slowdown situations: Looking on the floor in the RR on Tram (very bright floor) ; Fast movements (mouse, lerking) ; looking at a hive ; battle situations.

Playable: not really smooth, good for looking around a bit, bad for serious playing.

Hints that helped (like r_shadows false/r_flash false): Maximum 4 frames more, so not for me.

Am I the only one who cares about that? You all tell about well played games, everybody's concerned about lags....how is you graphical performance...? not important to you? Or is this too early to ask..?

Those of us with too poor graphical performance pretty much can't play. Good luck tracking a skulk leaping across the room with 80 ping and 3 fps.
  • countbasiecountbasie Join Date: 2008-12-27 Member: 65884Members
Well that's clear, but I mean those guys who can play. The hardware of my laptop is not too bad I think...just want some comparisons and ideas..because 24 FPS is right under the playable limit - is there anyone who has a solid framerate and why? I think that's what I wanna know, and the devs probably too.

I'm currently "working" on a setup of different benchmarks to get some kind of way to compare overall PC performance with NS2 performance.
I will open the thread later this day when Im home from work. Aprox five hours from now.

Is the game limited to 30fps? I have an ATI 4890 HD Radeon, I get an average of around 30fps. Drops to about 25fps in intensive areas (large open space + combat and lots of particle effects). Drops heavily in time of intense network lag (lowest I can remember is 4fps).

I was doing performance benchmarks from 153 to 155, but haven't had time to do 156 yet. So far fps has largely remained the same for me, although I did get a slight boost from 155 in the max framerate department.

My average fps in tram at 1680x1050 with a 3.8ghz Core2duo and 512MB Radeon 4850 on high settings was 25fps, min is usually the low teens, and max recently with build 155 was ~40, although I can get into the 50s in the ready room.

FPS still varies a lot between maps and servers, so we won't get much out of looking at the fps counter once in a while. Looking forward to Bobby's setup though, if it can streamline the process and put the same stress on every machine.

I get 15 to 40 fps in action, the former being near the end of the game for obvious reasons. Commander view starts at around 40 and quickly drops to 20 after a few minutes. Remains steady afterward though. In the ready room or in servers with almost nobody, I've seen mostly 60 and up to 100 fps, but that doesn't mean anything.

IIRC, it was mentioned that the server pushes out updates at a rate of 20/s. Smooth play ought to be possible if your client can render the game at a stable 20-30FPS.

    AMD Phenom II X4 3.0GHz
    4GB DDR2 667MHz
    AMD Radeon 4870 512MB

    Medium Graphics @ 1440x900

A given game starts out between 25-35 FPS. After a few structures go down I'm stuck in the low 20s. It varies wildly by plus or minus 15 FPS depending on what is happening around me.

Given that the game hitches pretty badly if you turn around too quickly, fighting skulks is futile once the game gets about 5 minutes in.

I'm not complaining, just posting for the sake of information.

After more testing: Same for me, like explodingheadboy described.

Edit: Yes, this is not meant to be for complaining. It's meant for collecting data. Imagine, they come back from holidays and have 150 comparable benchmarks. That would be helpful i think.

And all the guys who have 3 FPS: post your specs anyway, it can only help, i think.

3 fps turned out to be a gross exaggeration, maybe it was just the server? Or tram... at any rate, got a decent game in rockdown later. The framerate was smooth most of the time, but it still felt like some things were choppy independent of the frame rate, like if I would try to move the commander view with anything except clicking on the minimap, it jumped all over the place.

Getting 45-60 FPS on listenserver, 30 (unplayable as it is) to 40 on most servers. 20-30 in combat.
    It's bad.

Also, I believe it is 30 updates/second, which, from previous gaming experience, I can not imagine to ever be enough. CS(:S) has what, 100 tick servers? TF2 66 tick servers? NS2 halves that? Without doing any harm? How? And why?
Seriously, if anyone is able to shed some light on this I would appreciate it; second time I'm asking, hopefully someone can explain why this isn't terrible.

We should set up a FRAPS benchmark like someone did for B154, or even use the same one

There was such a thing? Im currently looking for a way to benchmark NS2 but cannot really figure out to do it and still be compareable between different PCs...

    *edit*
    Ah, found it.
    http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...=111339&hl=

Maybe we should do the same and add other benchmarks to have a better comparison? (Which was part of the idea I had to compare. I simply used the Devil May Cry 4 Benchmark (Standard settings), as well as 3D Mark 06, 3D MArk Vanatge and PC Mark Vantage) So we have "third party" scores which give a good impression if something is wrong with a specific setup.

Most of you aren't mentioning your resolution. Does the resolution not have a significant impact on the framerate -I know that texture quality certainly doesn't?
  • Bobby is going homeBobby is going home Join Date: 2010-04-11 Member: 71323Awaiting Authorization
Well, a bit. But not the impact I hoped. Went down from 1920 to 1024*768 and it didn't really improve that much.

I imagine once UWE impliment some sort of demo recording, benchmarking will be a lot easier.

I mainly play on Rockdown, high at 1680x1050. With 6 players the FPS usually hovers around 35-40. Thou I usually play with flash and shadows disabled, which gives a nice boost to 40-60fps. Read room usually gives 70-100fps.

Alpha 152 used to give me about.. 20-30fps on Rockdown, so I'm pretty pleased with the increments of performance. Can't wait to see what the FPS is when my cards being 95%+ utilized, same with CPU :D

You need to lower your settings from "High" to at least medium...512 MB isn't enough to hold all the textures at high settings...I tried running it on a friend's computer and had the same issue the other day; it would go at 25fps, but keep dropping to around 3fps.

35-62 fps @ 1920x1200, high settings on Rockdown
i7 920 at stock speeds (~2.6 GHz iirc)

How did you get those nice graphs?
    *edit end*

It is just an idea how we could make benchmarks with more sense or lets say: which are comparable with each other.

So, here is what I did:

First of all I used third party benchmarks to get an idea what my system is capable of. For this I used the DevilMayCry4 Benchmark and 3DMark06 and 3DMarkVantage (all are free to use/download. Only Vantage needs a free to get trial key)

    Here are the results:
    All done with standard settings!

QUOTE

dmc4 dx9:

    Scene 1: 194.31
    Scene 2: 182.87
    Scene 3: 219.69
    Scene 4: 132.23

    dmc4 dx10:

    Scene 1: 226.37
    Scene 2: 212.83
    Scene 3: 278.30
    Scene 4: 134.39

    3D Mark 06: 13038

    3D Mark Vantage: 14067

    NS2 "Benchmark":
    Min: 22
    Max: 36

Then I used Fraps to do a small benchmark on tram.
If you want to do the same please use 1280*720 and Medium settings so that we have comparable results. Or at least do one run on this setting so that we have one result that is comparable.

Start Fraps. Start a game on tram and spawn as marine. Hit F11 to start the benchmark. Run (SHift!) straight for the tunnel (you should be facing it) and follow the tracks, turn left at the alien hive. Run up to the hive. Shoot two magazines into the hive, switch to pistol and shoot two mags into the hive. Turn around and walk(!) back to your spawn location. Hit F11 to end the benchmark.

Look in your "Fraps/Benchmars" folder for the minmax file and paste the data. The ms time should be around 75 seconds for the run.

Create a dxdiag file and attach the three benchmark files and dxdiag file in a zip and attach it.
Rename the benchmark files respectivly if you run several tests.

Finally, some sysinfo (dxdiag included in attached zip):

ingame on non-network on Rockdown(all fps are for alien side since i dont play marines ;)

    Readyroom
    high: 82 fps

low: 9 fps(with jumping and spinning in a certain area)

    ingame
    High: 62 fps
    avg: 40-45 fps
low: 10 (avg low 20 in certain areas while trying to shoot and jump etc)

    _________________________________________

ingame on network on Rockdown on the best server I have found

    Readyroom
    high: 62 fps
    avg: 30 fps
    low: 1fps connection problems detected!

    ingame
    High: ~60 fps
avg: 20-32 fps is very jumpy, i suspect this is network related(if the fps was solid at 32 i would consider that playable but jumping up and down makes it hard to get hit's registered)
low: 0 (avg low 10 in certain areas while trying to shoot and jump and if aliens or teammates are around fps drops)

(I must add that some servers I just get connection error etc, even though I have opened the suggested ports and allowed ns2.exe on my firewall.)

The big issue here for me being that +network my average fps drop about 20, and becomes very glitchy, and stutters at times, making me frowny face. If the game could get to the point where I could get the framerates I get currently in the ready room on lan, in an online game, I would be satisfied, avg 45fps is very playable and satisfactory, 20 is not. I might not have top end equipment, but I feel like I should be able to average 45-60fps. However this is a solid foundation, from what I've played, There have been points where hit registry and gameplay mechanics were awesome, Skulk vrs lmg marine is still fun and thats really what its about for me. It really just feels like a simple cl_rate #### is off when you play online, I'm no programmer, so i have no clue.

In a full server I haven't seen the drops that many people have recorded and usually it keeps at 60 fps but a couple times it would drop to 30 fps for no particular reason.

It got even worse considering on the dev server some guy hydra spammed an entire room. You walk in there and feel lag and then die (lag is a weapon apparently). Lawl it got so bad the server was on the verge of crashing and hanging like mad (until we got some GL's and cleared the damn room).
