guys i dont want to burst your bubble. but this game won't be as big, and as fun and the community will be smaller than you all hope and think.
With games like Black ops ( I hate call of duty franchise now) Gran turismo 5, Starcraft 2, the new WoW cataclysm, Diablo 3 , etc. By the time this game is finally released. There will be too many next generation games that are going to be more appealing to the masses of people. Yes, they probably aren't as fun, and as amazing and as innovative and as cool as this game, but unfortunately, masses of people don't look for creativity, they look to see what their friends are playing. So natural-selection, the original when it was free, when the graphics were close to top of the line, pretty much back in Half-life 1, cs 1.3(go bunnyhopping!!) - cs 1.6 PRIME Days, it had a really small population. So this game , won't be any different, and if it is, it will just have even less of a population.

I am terribly sorry guys, the fact that they are releasing the beta so ALL OF A SUDDEN, is because they are having financial problems and are trying to get people to purchase the game before they can have an educated look at what they are purchasing. the game is not yet in a playable state, even when it is, it will just be too late guys. I mean , the population of players playing at any give time when it is first released might linger between 2000-3000 people on at any given instance during prime hours. But off hours will probably be 500-1000 regional players. After the game has been out for a month or two, these numbers will fall, hard. Then the more games that are released after that, the number will continue to drop until there are only 100 - 200 players on at a given time.
A multiplayer only game, that is not only so far from the mainstream (its on a PC and not a console, unfortunately, consoles have more demand these days although PC Gaming will always remain my favorite) Also not only is it far from that mainstream (console vs PC) its also from the mainstream of games that we see these days. An FPS with RTS elements. I am sorry, but the average joe isn't smart enough to play an RTS (starcraft 2), let alone an RTS wihle FPS'ing.
Its the truth people. All we can do is hope for the best, and show our support towards unknown worlds. but i honestly think they should have taken their idea of natural-selection and partnered up with VALVE or another gaming company so they could have released this game when it would have had a chance to take off, two or three years ago.
The fact that they remained independent to make more of a profit, is the thing that might ultimately be the thing that makes this game die so damn fast. because it took too long to release. The sad thing is, they don't care how many people play it after they release it, they just want to sell as many copies that they can to lose the least amount of money that they possible can. I already think that no matter what they will make hardly any money off this game, if at all, any.
I know 3 close friends that played Natural-selection, which was FREE... and they won't buy this game for $40 when they can shell out another $20 for gran turismo 5. or pay $40 for their WoW expansion...

But seriously, trying to compare the future success of this game to AAA titles like Black Ops and WoW is just moronic.
Good day, sir!

I didn't read beyond this but games like Black ops make NS2 shine even brighter because of how ###### they all are.
Or can you tell me of one AAA Shooter, that has not been dumbed down to a level where it can be played by console players?

I'd like to think the community will be around the size of Natural-Selection's community. Given the amount of preorders, I'd say it's fairly likely.
stopped reading here. NS was the most played hl mod and only behind the official ones.

That's a really good point.

A huge publisher can spend huge amounts of money to make a hugely advertised and big-name game and make huge amounts of money back off it, indie devs make smaller games on a smaller budget for smaller returns, but they do so so that they can keep making games, eventually maybe they will even grow. Valve for example made half life and that was successful, now they are self published and making tonnes of hugely successful games. Alternatively frozenbyte have made a few smallish indie games which are fun to play, and are still making games.
As long as the game makes money to sustain and expand the business, it's a commercial success, and as long as it gets good reviews and people enjoy it, it's an artistic success. It doesn't have to break records.
Once Natural Selection 2 is fully working, people like me will not care about or play those other games, because we will be spending all of our free time playing NS2. I don't care how big the community is. I don't care how much money UWE makes. I don't care about anything except getting my hands on some NS2!
Once the game comes out, a guy like me doesn't just generate one sale, he generates 10 as he nags his friends to join in on the action. NS2 will do just fine so long as it makes it to release.
Also, the OP's insight into the motivations behind the decisions UWE have made could not sound any less informed. It sounds like OP spent all of perhaps maybe five or so minutes developing a game or working inside the industry, what makes OP so qualified to be all 'Video Game Nostradamus' on us?
Oh yeah, this is the internet. My bad.
Not every game is for all players. Every game has a target audience and NS is one game with a wider audience.
Do you know that most of the games you mention are actually falling on their player base? Do you know that starcraft 2 failed on it's bigger market? Do you know for how long those games were being developed?
Actually, do you know how much people own NS2?
Fail troll is fail.

At any point in time there are going to be next gen AAA titles coming out, if this post was 12 months old you could replace the above mentioned titles for MW2, WOW ROLK (well maybe not but there's always something with that bloody thing rumbling on) TBH NS's graphics were never top of the line, by the time the thing was playable and didn't have entity problems that could cripple a server 10 mins in (pretty much how build 155's memory leak works) it was already old hat, remember we are talking about a mod build on an old engine even for it's day.
However the graphics got by and it was the gameplay that made NS so epic.

I am not going to speculate too hard as to the motivation behind the push to beta but given the content of the announcement there probably is a strong commercial incentive to push on and go for a release as soon as possible, I should think that after they shut the original SE offer down when they went alpha their sales and thus income will have dropped to pretty much nill (also the only place to buy at this point was via website once they can deliver the product on a set date they can get it on the steam store which will help a hell of a lot to push sales.
Or maybe they just didn't want it to be a running joke vapourware game like DNF which has been in development so long it's actually a teenager now.
As for releasing before anyone can get an educated look at it..... Have you just arrived on the last boat back from mars?? the bloody thing has got youtube vids, it's been on sale for years, I think people have had a fair amount of time to asses it fairly on if they want to take a punt on it or not.

This is an interesting point, for many years the PC gaming market has suffered at the hands of the retailers, EA proclaimed it dead a number of years ago so did epic and Activision has neglected it for donkeys years. Yet is struggles on, the steam sales have sort of leaked into the charts finally, EA s*** the bed when they realised that MMO's existed after getting their hands on mythic and bioware. Oh and Activision got a bit of a surprise what with WOW's somewhat healthy (if you believe the numbers to be 100% accurate) 12 MILLION strong which even if you say those numbers are inflated a little, you are still basically talking about the equivalent of the entire population of Sweden paying each month to play a single game which isn't to be sniffed at.

Given both Charlies and Max's CV's (sorry I don't know too much about the others) I am sure they could have ######d themselves, UWE and / or NS2 out to a publisher to have a clone of NS1 pushed with prettier graphics or just get a contracted studio to churn a below par sequel out to check a few bucks cheap.
Personally I like to think they wanted to say indie so they keep control of their products, publishers tend to interfere with games even when they don't actually know what they are looking at, or they play it safe and churn out the same slop year in year out.
And if they don't do either of the above they have been known to completely wreck and break a game outright. Just ask Brat about CDV.

Or shell out time and time and time again for Sims expansions or this years COD instalment, it's actually the terminally unadventurous and the freetards that are wrecking the PC gaming market, not the fact that original games built on entirely new technology is running a little late.

Thats right, a game so simple it actually completes itself.
Welcome to the brave new world.
If you ever played CS (which has basically spawned all this crap in the first place) from the early betas and most of the FPS copies since, you would soon realise how boring waiting for the same game over and over again becomes.
Sure it may give you a cinematic experience, but it is the same thing just differently packaged.
They spent so much time developing the first game and received nothing for it... They're not being cheeky asking full price for this game. I owe them the price of many games as it has outlasted about 20 games I have bought since then.
The graphics are wicked, the game is fun and yes my friends will be playing this and I can play with other members of the community and make other gaming friends.
I don't know why these attempts at demoralising the devs have to be made... You're just bitter that the first one was free and now you and all your mates don't have access to it. It's obvious you haven't been around that long because you say that it was never popular.
Also can I add that I'm english and I'd be expected to pay £40 UK and the fact I paid $40 is even better :P
I've only played bad company 2 a few dozen times and I can't be bothered to fire it up unless my friend are on, yet I will still fire up NS after all these years and I still play a good few hours a week. (although due to my work patterns I usually end up playing on servers 3000 miles way with a 150 ping)
What you really meant was "sorry 4 this bad text" - or "welcome to my fantasyworld of bull######, aka i don't know facts and make my own fantasy story - because i like to look retarded to the public with my anonymous internez pseudonym i can hide behind"

Between NS2 and Spark's modding capabilities, I'd bet money on this claim. I can't wait to point back to this post in the future and say I told you so!
Replacing "for" with "4" does not constitute l337speek...
A big deciding factor in a game being successful has to do with the market itself and comparable games in that genre. The major attraction with NS has always been how unique the game is, which also will translate over to NS2. NS1 was hugely successful even with all of its flaws, the biggest being accessibility to new players which is as far as I have heard is one of the reasons for the changes in NS2. So back to my original statement, NS2 will should be successful given they can...

Address stability and performance issues

Make the game accessible to new players

Maintain the unique game-play experience NS1 offered

Translate that uniqueness into some sort of media to attract new customers (ideally FPS and RTS players)

There is no other game on the market that can offer a comparable experience like NS, and that is what attracted people to it in the first place. As for the game being a success well your reasons are pretty insignificant given RTS/FPS is itself its own entity and has nothing to do with Gran Turismo players. As for maintaining a player base that largely has to do with content updates and customization, both of which Unknown Worlds has already supported. I'm not outright saying you are wrong but your reasoning is misguided, the things that will determine NS2 being successful has more to do with the bulleted items above.
To summarize, given that NS2 does not really have any competition in the market, whether or not it is successful is largely up to UW and not so much what other games are doing.
I absolutely cannot wait till the game is finished, and the BETA gets the server memory leak fixed.
