difference between alpha and beta?

whats the difference between the alpha phase and the closed beta in terms of who can play? is it that only special ed purchasers could play the alpha and all pre-orders play the beta? sorry i haven't followed this closely.

    The alpha was restricted to people who pre-ordered the Special Edition. People who merely pre-ordered the standard edition had to wait for the beta.

    The first 10k to pre-order will get access to the closed beta.

    I think your right; this is now the beta phase of the pre-orders - meaning anyone who bought Std Ed (or pre-orders from today onward etc?) gets to play the beta, as far as I understand it.

    They've already gotten 10k purchases. About 90% of those were special edition.
