Hard To Kill Marines..
Marines Who Think They Are Skulks!!!

I've recently seen many marines who behave like skulks and are really hard to bite as a skulk!!

I was playing on a really good Kharaa team the other day, I mean really good, you know, running with the wolf pack and taking out structures and marines with minimal respawning. The game ended and some of our previous team ended up playing marines. I think that those people who consistently choose to be Kharaa are beginning to get bored and playing marines instead.

Anyway, this guy who was a mean skulk was playing mean marine too. When you get good at playing skulk, you develop natural instincts for the best way of taking down marines as quickly as possible. Anyhow, I was a skulk now, and this ex-skulk was a marine, I was watching him jumping, strafing, doing all kinds of things against THREE (!!) skulks without getting bit!! I didn't even bother to join in at that point, I thought to myself, yeah he's dead... He didn't die and ended up taking out all three skulks.

Okay, when me and this guy were on the same Kharaa team we both had the top kills, his ratio slightly better than mine. So I go in, this time really cautious, learning the lesson from the three skulks before me who got their butts kicked. We circle each other, everytime I dive at him, he strafe jumps away. Luckily he hasn't reloaded yet, so I have a few goes at him, and miss him, in the meantime, he's busy reloading..

I go at him again, and this time, he's firing, so I quickly climb up a tall wall to dodge his bullets, and drop down on his head, just as he moves out of the way. I'm keeping my biting to a minimum so he doesn't locate me so quickly. The skulks before must have gotten a little damage on him, because it only took me one bite to kill him, and it was only because I worked out his pattern, and strafe jump bit at the same time he strafe jumped. But damn, was he hard to kill!

The Lesson Learnt

Is to know your enemy, to know your enemy, you have to be the enemy. The reason this guy could avoid skulks, was because he was a good skulk himself and knew how they attacked. The way he moved was very much like a skulk.

The marines that always seem to get killed time and time again, are the CS kiddies who always play NS as marines. If you play Kharaa, you'll know how Kharaa think, roughly how many bullets Kharaa can take, and you'll live longer for it.

I don't know why it's sad... unless you play an alien and get killed by them alot.

    blink blink...
is there something we can do w/ Stamina to prevent bunny-Marines?
or is there something in that story-ish thingy that doesn't allow it?

I've found this too, playing as a marine.. most aliens look straight forward and try to bite my knees, so when they start to get into biting range, a simple jump over them (most will keep charging straight forward) and I can fill their discombobulated tails full of lead before they realise what happened.

Of course, half the time it doesn't work and the situation ends up far messier than it has to be... but that's for a non-bragging post!

Skuls are fairly easy to kill. WHen they charge you, they run in straight lines.....take out your pistol for crying out loud and pop that dog!

Funny, i find that jumping really doesnt help you much, I die just as easily if i dont.

Depends on the skulk, if he's rubbish you can dance around him, if he's good a jump makes your movment more predictable- this is a bad thing.

    Also puts your aim off.

Still on public the chances are atm that they won't be a good skulk...

The best way to avoid skulks is to strafe in either direction and back away at the same time, while you track him with the crosshair and fire at the same time. Often the skulk just go by you, and if you didn't kill him, you get another chance, just find your aim and start over.

Jumping can help sometimes, but it also makes it harder to aim, so don't use it to much. If the skulker get very close it's pretty good to use, since it tends to distract them and make them loose their target. Newbie skulks can loose their aim completely and run of in a different direction

I've always said that the only way to be better then the opposeing team is to first be them.

i actually spent 3 months as a hacker in CS, beacuse i got so sick of not knowing excatly what they see and what goes on in their controlls. needless to say, after three months they were still hard to beat, but not nearly as hard as before.

i agree compleatly with you, learn how someone plays something, then devlope your own sinister counter attacks. i've even discoverd, what i like to think as, the best tactic agenst an onos. I leanred this by first playing as one. Now, I can mow through about 5 of them (not at once mind you) with out really getting hurt.

People who spam their jump keys need to learn how to strafe normally....

Bunny-hopping marines, especially ones in heavy armor, seem to be much more difficult to kill.. which is sad.. but if you got two hives, they're dead with a few blasts from acid rocket! :o

Jumping is great versus skulks. Get around some obstacle (chair, ledge, table, pipe, etc...) and hop like mad. Instead of having to hit the marine in two dimensions, the skulks suddenly have to navigate three. And if jumping screws your aim, you just have to practice more. Simple as that.

Play the reverse, when the skulk leaps at you or jumps, duck right under the skulk and open up on him as he flys in a perfectly straight line above you, funny as hell sometimes too (knife them as they go over you )

Aiming is hard due to relative vector of you and your target, any increase to that relative vector will make it harder to aim. Irrespective of how good you are jumping will always lesser your ability to hit stuff, well unless you have a 100% hit ratio in every situation.

Its really a question of how much it throws your aim vs how much it helps you survive, I personally do jump when they get right on top of me. But I only shoot them if I'm on my own.

I dislike the mentality of jumping and shooting the skulk thats on you. People should be covering each other and not trying to dance with a skulk AND kill it, just dance and let your buddies kill it. I imagine dancing and shooting at another skulk works ok too.. Ain't tried this yet but think I will..
