He's talking about Death Machine, awesome movie :D

Trailer:

But the robot in the movie doesn't have any personality at all, still would be cool a model as it would probably make aliens run away screaming ^^

We just aren't interested in a cold, silent, impersonal robot. We want the little guy to be a little buddy for the marines, and we feel that a more humorous approach makes him more endearing. Also, dark and moody and scary are nice and atmospheric, but if the game is nothing but that all the time, it can get a bit tedious and oppressive.

One thing, though, a lot of the things the MAC says, particularly all the command confirmation vocal bits, are meant to be for the ears of the commander only, though I don't think its set up like that at the moment. So, for the marines on the ground, he is meant to be a lot less chatty.

Out of curiosity are the current MAC sounds from Portal? It really sounds like they are, as in straight ripped and are being used as placeholders, but if they are not I would try to make them sound more unique to NS2. I only played through Portal once so I don't remember what Gladous (or whatever) says but the MAC in it's current form sounds like a carbon copy of Portal's voice acting.

I agree with the idea of bit more gritty mech. Seems this one has too many similarities to Claptrap from Borderlands.

I fully support the OP. The MAC facial features of 2 eyes + mouth and voice seems so out of place. One optic lense is enough and the rest of the front could be other various sensors and stuff. Atm it is a black sheep in my personal vision of the NS universe. I know NS2 is not NS1, but I believe a large playerbase will be people from the first game with expectations of a cold unforgiving and a more or less competitive "professional" environment.

I would not like the NS franchise to be made into something less serious and with a more comedic approach. There are other multiplayer games who has a more suitable market for those type of players. Like Battlefield: Heroes. Or TF2 with the cartoonish classes.

I want the cold and unforgiving setting back, like playing Deadspace, not a spoofed version of NS1.
The MAC is supposed to support the marines deadly task in annihilating infested dark corners in space. It should be more gritty and task efficient. I figure the Goliath voice from starcraft is something I'd like to see. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1TIckYZLKM

There are perfect examples of how things get a little more humoristic approach in a more subtle way.
The gorge is allready an iconic fun and loveable character, and the belly slide has made it even more hilarious / epic. This is imho the way to go!
Just painting a goofy human similar setup face, slap on some helium-inhaled dialogue is a too obvious and desperate attemt at comedy.

If you want comedy into the game not to scare a younger audience away I fear it just pisses of the "serious" sci-fi fans (like grumpy old me) and the rest of the NS2 gameplay maybe isnt exactly what the younger teens want anyway.

Anyway, thats my feelings :p

This really neatly sums up the excellent counterargument to a 'serious' MAC.

Personally, I find the funny MAC adds alot of character!

chucke, "now we dance", "I need an outlet for my aggression" would be your counter-counter argument.
I don't like SC2's over-done "hicks-in-space" theme, but their brand of SCV silliness fits that theme. The NS universe may have similar grungey dirty-tech but it was not silly, it had a distinct dark humour. Although at this point it's moot since the entire concept of the MAC clashes with the rest of the NS universe; NS has a ballistics & wheels feel, the MAC belongs more in a phasors & AI universe. It should have been either track mounted or wheeled. Nothing in the NS universe hovers without flapping.

I guess it's more of a flight unless you aim straight up and gently tap the button.

Not a fan of the MAC at all personally, I find it to be very un-immersive when compared with the nature of the rest of the marine tech. First thing I'll be doing when the game is released is ripping out the sounds and re-texturing/modelling it.

If he was a lot like CL4P-TR4P and got ticked off at marines in his way, then I would be a lot more happy.

but i totaly agree on this design decision. NS2 needs so humor, and who doesn't love the portal drones?

I liked how they worked it Portal's world. It's a weird, clinical place filled with weirdly twisted AI. NS1 on the other hand was militaristic and gritty. It's has completely different kind of tension. Also, since Portal did, the idea isn't totally original anymore.

I don't know really. My instincts would say the present design doesn't work in NS world. Once again, looking forward to see how they pull it off as a part of the big picture.

I think I will install my own soundfiles, without variety.
Even if UWE boosts the AI scripts a bit, it's still a robot.

Let's have him just spout Duke Nukem quotes instead.

I mean come on, I'd crack up hearing a mac bot just going "I've got balls of steel." or "Damn I look good"

Maybe the MAC needs to makes sounds like Pacman, I mean he's yellow... And every time a new MAC spawns, he does the Pacman intro...

Personally i imagine the perfect MAC voice as the claptrap's from borderlands, not the evil one but the normal ones, but saying really cynical stuff, in an happy matter. Maybe dark humor is a better comprimise between humor and immersion. Because breaking immersion just for the sake of a joke isn't a very good thing to do. And yes, even multiplayer games with voice chat and humor can be immersive. It's called a good game.

Some examples:

"Yes sir! I trust you completely!"
"That won't get us all killed for sure!"
"No problem, We've got enough carbon anyway!"
"Another step to the end of this conflict! ....Great!"
"Yes sir You know best! I'm not worried at all!"

Oh, and please..... Either way what he says, have the MAC be heard by all in range (but make it a relatively small range). It's kinda stupid to say "a buddy for the marines" and then not having any marine actually hear him. Theres a good chance that if marines are escorting a MAC, they will be selected with the mac so you can give them squad orders at the same time. If you get a order to "move into a room ahead and the MAC your escorting says "Yes sir, that won't get us killed at all!".... well that'll just crack me up.

It makes the marines seem more to be composed of individuals than of clones.

Just the thought that a tech did not like the default personality or soundfiles ;) of the MAC and changed them suits my understanding of military.

any modern fighting force there is no focus on the individual. your trained & indoctrinated so your unit/squad is the single and only unit. Realistically, the designers of the robot would probably not have given it any voice, as it would be unnecessary and possibly distracting in the field.

The last thing highly trained heavily equipped marine commandos would need is a dinky little field utility robot floating around cracking jokes when they are fighting to save themselves and humanity.

I can totally see the humor in it, and I do think it's funny, but it just has no place in NS. That's just not a matter of opinion either, that's fact. It's a big reason NS is liked and highly praised, it's serious business.

@ the original poster of this thread,
I feel what you are saying, & i did NOT really like it when I heard it, BUT
I think the problem to your feels has already been solved by my friends @
Blizzard Entertainment, in Star Craft or (more so in) War Craft,
whenever you would click on a unit they would go through a list of random lines they say that is unique to the individual.
However, when you click on the same unit too many times,
they would say something different from those lines.
The different lines they would say would either be: funny, rude, or unique but in-tune with the game or character.
Sometimes they would have them reference outside things in the real world.
A good example would be from Warcraft 3. The Orc peon, who builds & gathers everything, would say things like:
"Work, Work, Work." & "hhhhhhrrrrrrmmmm" if you click on him too many times he'd say, "stop POKING ME!!!!"
if you poke the human work too many times he'd say I didn't vote for you, but the joke is that it was a feudal type of era where you don't vote.
