<div class="IPBDescription">something like Halo 3s guest players.</div>Halo 3 has a function that lets you join online matches with 4 people in split-screen with four controllers. I really like that function, cause I can then bring friends over to my house and play Halo 3 online with other players.
I really like if Unknown Worlds could implement a similiar function for Natural Selection 2. It would probably help boost the games popularity.
In the PC world, its called Spawn installations. Instead of having four controllers, we have 4 PCs.
One with a copy of Natural Selection 2 could install a Spawn installation on three computers and the full game on his own computer.
To prevent people giving out free copies of your game, the Spawn installation needs to be crippled. The limit is that it can only join game lobbies hosted by a person with a full version copy of NS2 within your LAN. The Spawn installation cannot host games, set up dedicated servers, play SP or anything like that. It can ONLY join game lobbies within YOUR LAN. Also, if you want to prevent people using LAN emulators like hamachi and tunngle, set a 30ms ping limit to join the lobby to ensure that people are really on a LAN connection.
The system works like these:
- One guy with a full copy host a game lobby on LAN.
- The Spawn installation users join his lobby.
- Then the game lobby host joins a server and take the rest of the spawn installation users in the lobby with him to the server.
- If the game lobby host leaves, the rest of the spawn installation users will automatically leave. Also if someone with a spawn installation is using cheats and gets detected, the host of the game lobby gets his CD-key banned. This ensures that the game lobby host only shares his copy with friends he trust. Its like that the spawn installations that join the game lobby is a guest of the host of the game lobby.
Instead of having my friends bring their controllers over to my house, they bring their computers. Then all of us could game a session online. Also, if UWE could, is also enable people to join servers on LAN. Like I said above, 30ms ping limit to ensure that pirates does not use LAN emulators. Microsoft has done that to prevent Xbox 360 using LAN emulators like Xlink Kai and XBConnect, and GTA 4 and Halo 2 for PC to prevent Hamachi. It works!!

There's no reason to meddle with limiting it to LAN play only, though I love my LANs quite a lot, if you're going to allow spawns in online servers. Simply restricting spawn installs only to the server which contains its host would be more convenient and effective since most people don't actually LAN when they're playing something with a friend or two... though <a href='index.php?act=findpost&pid=1793972'>as I mentioned in the "guest pass" thread</a> there's some other possible limitations that might be worth playing around with to keep a spawn feature from replacing rather than encouraging sales.
But actually allowing online play with a secondary copy when the original owner is on that server might be a nice idea.
