Extreme lag inside editor + steam overlay?

I decided to give the editor a try tonight and discovered after opening up all three of the existing maps to check it out that not only was the steam overlay running so I could hit shift+tab and see my overlay in all 4 editor windows, PLUS the editor was extremely laggy and nearly impossible to use. Although I run the viewer just fine.

Does this have to do with similar optimization problems with the NS2 engine that will be overcome later?

Here are my specs, I'm pretty sure my hardware isn't the issue.

Intel Core 2 E8400 3.0ghz
XFX GeForce 9800GTX+
4gb 1066mhz DDR2 Ram
Windows 7 x64

If you open up the official maps with all the gemoetry, props, lighting, shadowed lighting etc. it will not give you great performance on lit mode ... okayish on unlit. Wireframe is pretty smooth for myself and I'm using a Quad Core, 5770 4GB system myself Zen. So it sounds like you're getting current expected performance.

I wouldn't imagine there will be as much optimisation as the main game will get. In an editor you need to see everything so performance will suck. You can use groups to hide lights/geometry if you want.

I don't know about the STEAM overlay but the performance you're experiencing is normal. The Spark Editor uses the exact same engine as the game itself. Since the game is running slower than a turd right now, expect the editor to run even slower, since (as someone else has already mentioned) everything is visible within the editor.

Don't launch it through Steam and it won't appear.
