Can't Validate Key on Steam

When I try to activate my NS2 Beta key on steam, I'm getting an error that says:

The product code you've entered requires ownership of another product before activation.

Exactly what engine does NS2 run on?

Also, what "game" do I need to own first before I can activate this?

    I've run into the exact same issue, and I'm surprised it hasn't been addressed yet in a news post. I do like supporting UnknownWorlds as an independent developer, which is why I bought the collectors edition, but I would appreciate it if the code worked.

    Oh, and in reply to your question, I believe it is their own engine that they built from the ground up.

    you need two keys. first to activate ns2, then to activate the SE edition. the error sounds like you use the SE key first.

    In order to play the NS2 Alpha you need to enter the two keys for your special edition.
    You got one key right at purchase which unlocks the NS2 download, and anotherone which enables you to play alpha.

    Thanks, Asraniel and Sorcerer, had exactly the same issue. Guess I just didn't bother associating the first key with steam before because there wasn't any point at the time... thumbs up!

    Hello! I gave a friend a SE key, he added it to play Engine Test and it worked (non steam). When he tried to add that key to steam, it failed. What is happening? Key was first accepted when not on steam, and not accepted on steam?

    it is not the same key. you got an email with the steam key.

    Tried retrieve it like 20 minutes ago. Either their service is down or it takes ages. The thing is with my key 1, i just used same for steam release and the non-steam engine test. Why shouldnt this also work with key 2...

    I have the same problem. I guess it has to do with the fact that I just ordered the special edition yesterday. I got the Alpha key but not the regular key.
    I tried "Retrieve" but it has now taken more than two hours without any mail at all.

    I read a report of someone waiting 5 hours for their key.
    It will come, but just like everything else so far it just requires some patience.
    Understandably a frustrating situation that its not coming out immediately, but when it comes to NS2 im living by the saying "Good things take time" :)

    its possible that i may have used my SE key first

    but i was never sent any different key, and when I use the retrieve key function all I get is the Black Armor key and my SE key again.

    Anyways I get an error message saying NS2 was only available to those who purchased the SE, which I did.

    Yeah i got that message too at first but that was only because i had not activated my black armor key
    if you havent done that you cant play the alpha
    just add black armor key into your steam and you should be away :)
