Really? Oh well we can fix that.

Basically there are three aliens: Blarghy aliens (zerg), magic aliens (protoss) and monkey aliens (terrans). The monkey aliens are currently under attack by the blarghy aliens and whenever this gets out of hand the magic aliens show up and blow both sides up. On one monkey alien planet the blarghy aliens have just shown up and the monkey aliens are trying to get away before the magic aliens make everything go space kablooiee. One of the monkey aliens then uses a blarghy lure to lure the blarghy aliens to the monkey alien capital so that he can seize power, but he sacrifices a monkey alien pawn (named Kerrigan) to accomplish this, thus angering another pawn (Raynor) because he liked her, so Raynor runs away.
Meanwhile: The blarghy aliens are all up ons because they have a cocoon with a really powerful being in it so they transport the cocoon to blarghy alien space. The cocoon hatches and it's Kerrigan who is now a queen (GET IT?!) of the blarghy aliens. Also one of the magic aliens kills one of the blarghy alien brains but inadvertently reveals the location of the magic alien homeworld to the main blarghy alien brain, so the blarghy aliens invade the magic alien homeworld.
Meanwhile: The magic aliens fight the blarghy aliens on their homeworld, and they're losing. One of the magic aliens goes off in search of the dark magic aliens because they're the only ones who can kill blarghy alien brains. The magic alien learns the secrets of the dark magic aliens and uses them to blow up the main blarghy alien brain so that the war ends for a while, only the magic aliens have to flee their homeworld for the dark magic alien homeworld because there are blarghy aliens everywhere.
Meanwhile: There's various other stuff I don't remember too well because I never played Blood War, but the dark magic aliens lose their queen and also the monkey aliens have various breeding programs, including one to make a new main blarghy alien brain under their control and another one to make mixed magic blarghy monkey aliens. Anyway at the end of it all Kerrigan ends up in undisputed control of all the blarghy aliens and that's pretty bad because she's evil now, in case that wasn't clear.

That's most of what you need to know, Starcraft 2 picks up from there. Starcraft 2 is in individual chapters though so don't expect resolutions to any of these plotlines soon.

this would have been much more readable if you just said terran, zerg, and protoss instead of trying to be cute.

Start of film.

A young boy looks up at the sky, in the middle of the woods, at night, as an asteroid streaks overhead. He turns to his father to point this out, and as he does, an explosion lights up the forest and knocks both father and son off their feet. They turn to each other.

BOY: What was that?

DAD: I don't know son! Probably something mysterious, let's go and check it out.

The father and son head over to the site of the explosion. As they get closer, the camera cuts to the viewpoint of something in the trees, watching them as they walk. They reach the edge of the crater.

BOY: Whatever this was, it must have been big!

DAD: You're right, son! Wait! What's that?

The dad points to the edge of the tree-line where something can just be seen moving in the shadows.

DAD: Show yourself!

A ZERGLING runs out of the trees, followed by many more ZERGLINGs. The father and son are consumed as the camera pulls up and out of the woods, revealing a small town just outside the edge of the woods.

Many misadventures in the forest between hunting parties and police result in the zerg getting more biomass to create more zerg. They eventually approach the town itself.

The camera cuts to the interior of a spaceship, where a blinking light on a console starts flashing. A tall alien in the shadows turns toward it.

Middle of film.

A late-middle-age sheriff sits in his patrol car, looking gruff and totally "sick of this ###### that is going on". He is holding his car's radio mouthpiece in his hand whilst leaning against the window. He talks into it.

SHERIFF: What! More bodies? You have got to be kidding me!

VOICE ON RADIO: They were torn up! Barely anything left!

SHERIFF: Was it wild animals or som-

Suddenly a ZERGLING jumps onto the hood of the Sheriff's car, startling him.

SHERIFF: What in the blazes!

The sheriff struggles out of his car and pulls his gun, managing to kill the zergling just before it pounces on him. The sheriff staggers back to his car and picks up the radio mouthpiece.

SHERIFF: Son, you'd better call the army.

In the woods, at the site of the original explosion, a spaceship lands and the tall alien steps out, casually killing a few zerglings as he does.

ALIEN: So... they have arrived on earth. Very well!

More misadventures occur when the army arrives to do battle with the zerg, only to lose because they're nameless goons. Their leader is also gruff and mean to the sheriff, ensuring that he gets eaten when he disregards the sheriff's advice. The tall alien and the sheriff meet each other, and the alien introduces himself as a Protoss "Zerg Hunter", part of an elite cadre that hunts down zerg that find their way to planets that aren't advanced enough to deal with them. The sheriff explains that he is an ex-special forces soldier who retired to this town to get some peace. He also claims that he is "getting too old for this ######" at least once during a fight scene. The sheriff and the protoss quickly become fire forged friends.

End of film.

The Sheriff is hanging out the side of a helicopter, holding the hand of the Protoss, who is dangling outside the helicopter as it hovers over a children's hospital, which has now been completely taken over and infested by the zerg.

PROTOSS: You must let me fall, human!

SHERIFF: No, hunter! There must be another way!

PROTOSS: There is no other way, human! The infestation is too advanced! We must end it now while we still can, and the bomb in my armour is the only thing that can do it!

The sheriff looks down in anguish

PROTOSS: My only... my only regret is that I could not learn more of this human emotion you call "friendship".

SHERIFF: You were a good friend! You ARE a good friend! There is still time to learn more!

PROTOSS: Not for me, human. Take care of your planet.

The protoss lets go of the sheriff's hand and drops into the hospital. A chain-reaction explosion starts to tear the building apart.

HELICOPTER PILOT: We have to get out of here!

The sheriff nods, his eyes glazed, as he stares down at the scene unfolding below. The camera switches to a chase camera of the helicopter as it flies off into a sunrise, and the screen fades to black as the credits start to roll. DROWNING POOL - TEAR AWAY plays over the credits.

I'm quite excited about Starcraft 2, after playing the beta I can say the multiplayer experience was top notch. Seeing this much effort and detail put into the cinematics really makes me want to participate in the single player experience. I don't see what is so bad about displaying all these types of "cliche action scenes" are you guys looking for some Shakespearian gaming experience? Come on. I want action.

I will cut you. Serious.

I have the digital download version, but I can't install it yet, it says I must wait until the 27th. I hope that means the 27th aussie time, since that's when I'll be attending the midnight launch at my local eb and picking up a copy. If I go to that trouble and I can't install it when I get home, I'll be pissed.

double post but:

so i downloaded the digital distribution thing, and upon downloading it i tried to install it. it wouldn't let me, saying wait unti tuesday, but the interesting thing is that there was a button to view the manual, which i promptly did and read all the juicy backstory info in the manual. At the time i didn't think it a big deal, but out of curiosity i tried to open it up again and said i couldn't.

So blizzard might have accidentally allowed people to read the manual a week before launch. If you can't read it, you're not missing out, it basically walks through what happened in starcraft and brood war. The more interesting backstory is in the original starcraft manual, where it explains how everything came to be.

Most amusing about the launch so far? The few people that write comments like:

"I have to wait to the 27th? I'm going to pirate it a play it earlier!"

Wonder how he'll do that....

Hell yeah.. I did the whole campaign @ normal yesterday and thought I could give it a shot at brutal -- I got owned in the first mission.

As for some "omg spam", I don't know. SP is really nice and all, but I find the story a little shallow. Maybe because it turns out to be the exact ending I've been wanting for years, or because I'm getting too used to RPGs like Mass Effect or Dragon Age.

i'm playing on hard, and the first 5 or so missions weren't too difficult.

spoilers about the names of 3 early missions:
It got pretty close on the terrazine mission, and the first mission on the lava planet took a looong time since i had to move my base about 12 times, but the zombie mission is friggin impossible.

Playing on normal first time through just to get the story. Not as good as SC1's story, but still good.

However: The final mission deserves it's spot. Holy ######, I didn't think they could do better than two missions before. This is the pinnacle of Starcraft.

Killed of air and fighting the nydus @final is way easier.
Just remember to keep building SCVs (yep although you start the 20 smth. you should still build more)
Build 3 Bunkers @ each choke and add a PSI disruptor. Place 3 SCVs so that they can repair the bunkers. Now produce tanks and thors and use them to reinforce your chokes. Against the nydus channels you should call in the valkyrie mercenaries asap (call them twice). With the longer cloaking upgrade they can take out every nydus channel with ease and 0 micro.
When Kerrigan comes dont send heavy units after her (cruisers etc) instead wait till she is near your choke and then start bombarding the the thors speical attack and the valkiries from the back. You can also use the nova wave everytime you see Kerrigan.

While doing this carefully place turrets around your base and get a few(6) goliaths for the overlord wave.

I guess the most important part are the upgrades and research chioces you made. THe following would be preferable:

BIO Steel for automated vehicle repair.
Science vessels is a great help with the repair function
Bigger Bunkers are a must
Techreactor is a must or your base might get crowded.
Beeing able to build two SCVs at once is the best upgrade anyway.
Flame turrets are great when build in front of your bunkers.
Planetary Fortress might make a good support, I guess but is not really needed.
Thors Special Ability is a must have. (Good vs Kerrigan)
Both Tank Upgrades are a must have.
Longer cloaking for valkyries is a must have.
Missle turret upgrades are important, unless you want to build 50% more turrets.
SCV Faster repair is a must have.

The whole campaign ins normal is pretty easy except maybe the last mission with air.

Fact: To survive this mission on brutal you have to make sure that every upgrade and research you choose is chosen to make the final mission survivable.
