Basically, the client connection code is really rudimentary right now. There are several problems:

If you try to join a server that is full, you will hang

If you try to join a server that is configured to not use the default port of 27015, the client will try to connect to 27015 anyway and hang

If you try to join a server that is not set up properly to forward the port or is bound to an internal IP you will hang

There are several other possible issues, but those are the most common, and it all basically boils down to the fact that the client does not have any nice error messages and it won't time out for you when it fails to talk to the server, it just hangs, which a lot of people think is a more major problem like the game failing to load or crashing while loading.

In short, try a different server. The server list doesn't show you max slots right now, but you can guess as its usually a nice number like 8, 12, 16 or 24. Also consider getting on IRC, where a lot of the server admins and devs hang out, and ask if there's a server open. Many servers are going to be passworded as the game lags horribly when people connect, so an open pub is pretty much unplayable. A lot of these servers are open, just ask for the password in IRC.

Is there an easier way to abort a connection attempt and go back to the menu?

Use Bry's command in the post below.

<strike>disconnect in console will stop the connection attempt, but the menu will not come back. map ns2_tram will load up a listenserv and once you're in the readyroom you can hit esc to get the menu. Depending on your computer's power and whether or not you've already loaded the map that session, simply exiting the game (type exit) and reloading it is probably faster. On my i7 system the main menu loads up from fresh almost instantly.</strike>
