    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->"GAMEPATH\Steam\steamapps\common\natural selection 2\NS2.exe" -map ns2_tram -limit 32 -lan false<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

My best bet. Obviously cant test because to run the NS2.exe you need to active it.

Edit: only issue with the above is that the game will have to be running which seems like a major resource feast. Further it does look like it'll behave much like a listen server then.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I hope not, I want to be able to pack the server files and send them over to my dedicated server without needing to install steam. We shall see.

That would be a possibility if they didn't put in the Dedicated_Server_Usage.txt, examples like this one

    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->Server.exe -map ns2_tram -limit 32 -lan false<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

I'm on standard edition, but I sure hope I will be able to host a dedicated server for the alpha.

I am collecting the information that I can find here: <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/wiki/index.php/Dedicated_Server" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/wiki/inde...edicated_Server</a>

Are there any informations regarding used ports already? So I can forward them to host as soon as possible :)

I'd rather set it up manually than letting every application modify my router's setting at will without telling me.

Latest tweet says "NS2 dedicated server: <a href="http://bit.ly/b4Miff" target="_blank">http://bit.ly/b4Miff</a> (at end). See Dedicated_Server_Usage.txt in your steamapps\common\natural selection 2 directory".

That link just goes to the alpha news post; and theres no message about dedicated servers.

The link he posted is bad. Try this one:
    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/news" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/news</a>

    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/download.php?file=Server.exe" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/download.php?file=Server.exe</a>
    You're welcome.

I have a server running, for at least tonight but maybe longer.

Correction in the Dedicated_Server_Usage.txt - The config.xml file is in %AppData%\Roaming\Natural Selection 2

Put the server.exe in your steamapps/common/natural selection 2 folder.

That's hilarious. We have to get steam fully installed on a dedicated server?

I'm going to assume this is just for the alpha, and possibly beta.

Trying to install it remotely is not cool.
  • MisfireMisfire Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5764Members
I managed to put a server up, however I have no idea if its working.... I do not have alpha right now. Is there no feedback in the console? I can't see how many players there are or what is happening. I can clearly see upload activity happening on the meter though.
  • MisfireMisfire Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5764Members
Seems to be a ton of problems right now with connectivity and lag. At least its great feedback for UW, and should help further improve this game even more and eliminate the lag.

I've decided to hold off hosting alpha servers for now. I'm gonna wait till beta when things are more optimized. People have been reporting huge upload spikes and 400kb/s just for a few players?

I can't seem to get the dedicated server to run at all. It's on a Windows Server 2003 Dedicated Box, the windows blinks so damn fast that I hardly can tell via remote desktop. no errors or log dumps that I can see.

Its probably giving you the steam_api init fail message. It just means you need to have steam running the background.

Logging into a steam account and running the server should do the trick.

However my issue was, there isnt a great way to check if its working correctly. There is no commands to see whos on the server.

Nope, it's not. I tried it with 2 different steam accounts. one with NS2 and one without.

I have tried all sorts of combinations.

    Server.exe -map ns2_tram -port 27769
    Server.exe -map ns2_tram -port 27769 -limit 10 -lan false
    Server.exe -map ns2_tram -port 27769 -limit 10 -lan false -name "|PC| Planned-Chaos Dedicated Server"

    A few others...

So if you don't have a dedicated video card your screwed?!?

As this is an Alpha release, it requires the PhysX Library to be installed. The PhysX library is part of the nVidia install. When trying to run I get the error "This application has failed to start because PhysXLoader.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I then uploaded the PhysXLoader.dll file from my own computer to our dedicated machine, and placed it in the folder. When running I now get the error "The application failed to initialize properly (cxc0150002). Click on OK to terminate the application". It appears that in order to run the dedicated server's for the Alpha release our server's need to have a dedicated video card installed, which unfortunately ours don't.

    FAIL!!!

damn, no idea then, sorry :(

try running the server through the command line, that way the window won't close after it errors out so you can see whats going on.
