Fast Way To Disable Phase Gates.

I found a way too quikly disable a phasegate at a hive or resource node. Just build a chamber on top of it and it's disabled.

    Hey, that's a pretty sweet idea.

    Does it actually 'disable' the phasegate, or does it telefrag whoever comes through?

    Of course, if you have the phase gate surrounded I've seen aliens also just leave it up and kill marines as they filed through one at a time. Whee.

    Nice idea, but if you can get close enough as a gorge in the first place, it pretty much means that the skulks will probably eat it before you get to it.

    If the game was working as designed, I do not think that building on top of Phase Gate would be allowed. I see this as exploiting a bug in the game and I will promptly kick any gorge I see on my server doing that.     You do know the alien buildings can stack on anything, right? That you could toss an OC on the CC if you were feeling spunky and snuck into the marine base or whatnot.

    LOL AN EXPLOIT.

    You can't build on top of other buildings, yet its possible to on a phase gate so it must be a bug lol. How is this an exploit, its either an intended feature, or one that the ns team didn't think was worth removing. The PT's aren't idiots this would surely have been spotted and removed if they wanted it to be.

    I love server operators that favour one side (not that you do, i just wanna tell my little story). I went on a personal run server the other day, and the marines had the two admins on their side. Despite only having the res point in thier base, the marines came stomping out of thier base with HA and HMGs within 10 minutes of the game starting. Needless to say, the alien team left preeeeetry quickly amid the marines whining about people leaving thier team lol.

    Good strat dude I never though about that myself tbh. Seems perfectly reasonable. Plonking a **obscenity** great chamber into a teleport would stop it working easily.

    I spose if you didnt destroy the gates and left it their maybe it would disable the marines teleporting system. Do the other gates still work after one of them has been blocked?

    WHOA! awsome dude, this one will really make those commanders mad who are yeling at there team to get to the phase gate and protect the base when nobody can make it, thats awsome for cutting off reinforcements

    I would like to say that I ironically think this is a VALID strategy!

    Firstly, the aliens have to be on the ball to go gorge, protect the gorge, and built on the phase pad.

    True, they MAY be able to cut out a vital link (and perhaps the first link) in the chain of phasegates, which is a powerful ability.

    However, and secondly... the marine commander just has to recycle the thing if it's causing problems, so it's not a marine-screwing-for-whole-game exploit as long as the commander has some sense.

    you can do the same to spawn portals. Its a little risky, but if you're in a group of skulks or fades attacking their base, then throw up offense towers on each spawn portal and the marines can only spawn with a distress beacon (15rp), plus most commander don't even think about that.

    I see a Phase gate as a transportation device. If you step on them, you are transported. Why should an Alien building not be transported ? Personally, I think it's an unintentional bug in the design of the game that the NS developers have either chosen not to address yet because it's not high enough of a priority bug or they do not know about yet.

    As for favoring one team over the other, I have not hesitated to admin_kick fellow marines whom I have warned not to take advantage of the crouch damage vs. melee (skulks, mainly) bug. I will kick players whom I warn to quit exploiting bugs and design holes.

    As a software engineer, I am all too aware of bugs and design flaws. Software is far from perfect. Designs rarely ever accomplish exactly what the designer intended them to. I am also aware that the vast majority of the human population follows a general code of ethics until it's in their best benefit NOT to. Ethical players are a very rare breed. I am no longer shocked by the lack of ethics in public, only saddened by it.

    I Luv it when the marines place a phase in one of your Hives cuz after you get the TF down you can just stand there as a fade or skull and and rack up your kills by standing there picking them off one by one as the come though the phase gate

    This sounds like an exploit to me, and I could definatly see this being fixed in the future. Basically, it's very cheap, and if an admin saw someone do this, they would probably be banned from the server.

    Can some one tell me how exactly a Gorge is going to close enough to a phase gate to put an OC on it without skulks killing the phase first or the Gorge dying? Also if they CAN get to it then its not going to be around very long anyway. It may be an exploit but it doesnt seem like a particularly harmful one.

    I think the reason you can't build on phase gates is that would be an even worse exploite (that and it'd probably be a real pain in the neck to code for such an uncommon occurancy). Can you imagine O chambers popping in and out of existance in your base, each moving on before it can be hurt much? They'd either die of turret fire or the commander would recycle the pad, but if they didn't, a smart alien team would build a bunch of O's to cycle through the enemy bases with a bunch of D's at the pad they control to heal them as they cycle, irritating the heck out of a lot of marines before it finished.

    Let it go. It's not much different than webbing them, and is that an exploite? Mean, maybe, but not an exploite. In my mind it's not an exploite unless it disrupts the balance or the designers say so. They havn't said so, and for such a trick to be pulled off, it'd take luck or a lot of work, it's not a game-wrecking unbalance (like the marine hitboxes can be, or recycling resources to get hives up and defended unbelievably fast)

    What would be nice would be if Gorges could recycle turrets they've made. You could build a turret on a phase gate to disable it, then later in the game after the Marines had forgotten about it you could eat the turret and all the fades and onos' go diving through it into the middle of the Marine's base. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I don't think it's a problem. Not many gorges are actually going to be able to get near a phase gate to do it anyway (what with marines popping out of it and the usual turrets nearby), and any passing fade will destroy the disabled gate when he sees it. And as pointed out, gorges can build on pretty much anything else, so why not on gates?

    Last time I found a gate I webbed it and dropped a couple of OCs beside it, which delayed the marines until fades could kill the gate. If I'd known better I would have plopped a chamber on the gate itself. And there's nothing to stop the commander recycling it and rebuilding it again round the next corner (and the gorge can't recycle the OC, which would now be wasted resources if it was in an out-of-the-way position).

    Speedy: Please tell me what your server IP/name is so I can permanently remove it from my refresh list. I hate "over-admined" servers.

    Anyways, I don't think this is a bug at all. There's a giant rim around the actual "phase" portion of the phase gate, and we've already demonstrated (by building on top of towers) that towers don't need to be touching the ground to go up. Where's the conflict?

    I just went and tried this on my lan. I built 3 phase gates in nearby rooms and had my brother gorge and come meet me. He built a defense tower (so it wouldn't shoot at me while I was playing around) as near to the center of one of the phases as he could. I went and phased to the "covered' one, and ended up just standing on top of the defense tower. Yay. No gibs, no skipping it, no anything. Cool idea, but not all that big a deal.

    What might actually be cooler is to leave the phase unmolested but put two offense towers on opposite sides of it. Maybe three. Instant death to any marines to pass through until the phase is destroyed or recycled. Gorges have to have some fun too <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I just tried this myself, and it works as advertised - if a chamber is built on top of the phase gate, the phase gate stops working. Don't know why it continued to work for you ... I didn't even have to build it in the middle or anything. Enough to put it on one edge.

    Id much prefer it to make the chamber cycle through the gates idea, is more plausible, (well not really, the gate malfunctioning or recognising no room to phase in marines it would turn itself off to avoid killing any marines) but having a teleporting Offence chamber or several cycling through would be a really hilarious (if not cheap) Way of negating any phase gate travel and adding general harrasment to any marine encampment, the comm could just recylce all or just one gate (the ones the aliens hold) And have his marines start again.

    then again, its probably a bad idea to do this, just leave it as be, as id guess the TSA would be smart enough to work out a way for the gate to see if there was enough room to phase in a marine before going ahead, it would just disable itself if something was in the way saving the marines life.

    If the phase gate is disabled, then it'sa valid tactic.
    If the marines were stuck in your chamber it would be a bug.

    The dev team must have implemented this, because noone gets stuck.

    So don't kick any gorges that use this tactic, it would be too lame. If a gorge manages to get to a phase gate then he's good.
